Dear Kim, I have found your "brick wall." THE HARRISS FAMILY FROM VIRGINIA TO TEXAS "Among the earliest pioneers who emigrated to Morgan County, Georgia were three brothers: Graves, Ralph and George Harris, for they were there when the county was formed. They were sons of William Harriss of Hanover County Virginia (wife not known). All three sons were named as bondsmen to collect debts from their father's water gristmill in Virginia. George was the father of William Harriss who was born in Virginia and married Sarah (born 1764 Virginia, and died 1864 Texas). On January 13, 1806 William Harriss purchased land on the North Side of Hard Labour Creek. (See Settlers on the Appalachee, 1805) by Robert S. Davis, Jr. The known children of William and Sarah were Seaborn, Theophilous, Ausborn and Sarah Phenaty. Ausborn reveived land in the 1827 Land Lottery as well as William's orphans. Ausborn was the executor of his father's will when William died on July 3, 1820, in Morgan County, Georgia. The sons are named on the 1830 census of Morgan County, GA. William Harriss' brand was registered with John Nisbet, Clerk of Morgan Co, on July 29, 1814. In Georgia, the family attended Sandy Creek Baptist Church where is is documented in the church minutes that Sarah, Ausborn, Seaborn and Theophilous had "gone to Texas." After William's death on July 3, 1820, the family left Morgan County, GA and came to Sabine Co., Texas prior to 1837 when Texas was a Republic, where they all received land grants for 640 acres. It is believed that a daughter, Phenaty Harriss Thompson, wife of William Alston Thompson, who had previously moved to Texas and appears on the 1835 Sabine County, Texas Census, along with the lure of free land were the motivation for the move. In 1839, Sarah, Theophilous, Seaborn, Ausborn and William D. appear on the tax roll. So we know that they arrived three years prior because they had to be in the Republic of Texas three years prior to reveiving a land grant. Sarah continued to live in Sabine Co, for the remainder of her life. On the tax rolls her sons are referred to as "agents" for her. In 1844, Theophilous named Sarah as "Mother." Sarah kept the land she received until her death. She also listed on the tax roll three slaves which she kept until the end of the Civil War. Sarah was born in Virginia in 1764 and died in Texas in 1864, a very courageous lady. Ausborn married Louisa Benge on January 27, 1830, in Morgan County, Georgia. Issue of Ausborn and Louisa Benge Harris: (1) Frances Harriss, born 1831, Georgia; (2) William D. Harriss, born 1834 Georgia; (3) Susan M. Harriss, born 1836 Georgia; (4) George Roderick Harriss, born 1838 Alabama; (5) Theophilious A. Harriss, born 1846 Texas. Ausborn reported 1840 acres, plus his 640 acres on the tax roll for 1853. He apparently brought four slaves with him to Texas. In 1844 he reported 1585 acres of land, seven slaves and one clock. Ausborn's land holdings were numerous until his death in 1862 or 1863. Because the courthouse burned in Sabine County, the probate records were not available. Ausborn served as County Treasurer for Sabine County in the years 1854-1858. Seaborn married Emily Arnold on December 4, 1833 in Morgan county, GA. On the 1850 census in Sabine County, Texas, Emily's brothers were James E. Arnold (age 22) and Thomas S. Arnold (age 23) both from Georgia, were living with Emily and Seaborn. On the 1860 Sabine County census, James B. Arnold, Emily's father, is living next door to Seaborn and Emily. Seaborn settled the estate of James B. Arnold, Emily's father. Seaborn is reported to have built the double log cabin in Geneva. Issue of Seaborn and Emily Harriss: (1) William D. Harriss, born 1838 Georgia; (2) Mary E. Harriss, born 1840 Texas; (3) Margaret M. Harriss (Pinkie) born 1842, Texas, married Samuel N. Strother, son of Thompson Strother; (4) Matilda E. Harris born 1844 Texas; (5) Malinda E. Harriss, born April 5, 1845, Texas; married her first cousin, Robert Thomas Harriss, son of Theophilous Harriss. She died May 24, 1897 and is buried beside her husband at Pleasant Hill Cemnetery, Rusk County, Texas. (6) James W. Harris, born 1848, Texas; (7) Phenaty E. Harriss, born 1850, Texas; (8) John T. Harriss, born 1851, Texas; (9) Sarah F. Harriss, born 1854, Texas; (10) Seaborn A. Harriss, born 1856, Texas. After Emily's death, Seaborn married Nancy, last name unknown, . Issue of Seaborn and Nancy: Ada Harriss, born 1866, Sabine County, Texas, and Adelia Harriss, born 1869, Sabine County, Texas. Seaborn last appeared on the 1883 tax roll. He is listed as having two horses, eight cows, nine hogs. The preceding year he listed on carriage/buggy. He died at the age of 68 and is buried in an unmarked grave at the King Family Cemetery, Geneba, Sabine County, Texas. The graves with the large concrete slabs are thought to be Seaborn and Emily." Kim, there is lots more information on the Harriss families in "Morgan County Georgia Heritage 1807-1997." You may want to contact some of the people who contributed the information. The above research (only a portion of her article) was done by Barbara Carter who "would like to correspond with others in this line." Her address: Route 1, Box 57, Rusk, Texas 75785. Estelle, What is interesting about the HARRIS's who moved to TX was that THOMPSON you listed. William Charles RICHTER (1873-1945), the oldest child of John C. RICHTER, Sr. (1848-1907)and Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) moved to Waco, McLennan County, TX BEF 1900 and there married a Lilie THOMPSON (1874-1965) ABT 1898. I do not have any details on her THOMPSON family but she and Willie had only one child, a Charles Montgomery RICHTER (1902-1981). Charles married Mildred LAZENBY (b. 1908) in 1928 and they only had one daughter, Roseanne RICHTER (1829-1953) who was killed in an automobile accident in Lubbock, Lubbock County, TX in 1953. I do know that Mildred was Catholic but do not know whether these THOMPSONS were Catholic or not. I talked with Mildred several years ago. I do not know if she is still alive or not and all of this information is from her. These RICHTERS are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, TX, except for Roseanne who is buried in Lubbock. I have a picture taken ABT 1945 of Willie, Lillie and their grand daughter, Roseanne RICHTER but the location is not listed but I assume, Waco. If anyone has any information on this THOMPSON family, I would love to hear about it. Thanks for this HARRIS information... John R. A folow-up on the HARRIS family. I found this bunch in a GEDCOM at World Connect. Ralph (1730/1760-Dec 1815) was the son of William HARRIS and either an UNK wife or a Mary GILES of PE County, VA. Ralph married a Mary McCALL on Married: 18 Dec 1785 in Goochland Cty, VA and married Agnes BALDWIN on 16 Dec 1790 in Prince Edward Cty, VA and he died in Morgan County, GA in Dec 1815. According to what I saw, he had only two brothers a Robert and a Thomas. There may have been more that were not listed. Ralph and Mary McCALL had: i. Williamson HARRIS b: 1787 in Va. Marriage 1 Mary Ann SHULL b: 1835 in Warren, County.TN. Married: 1 Mar 1855 in Miss, Marriage 2 Mary Ann UNKNOWN b: Abt. 1795 in Ga. Married: 1820 in GA, Marriage 3 Sarah BALDWIN Married: 1838 in VA Ralph and Agnes BALDWIN had: i. Baldwin Burford HARRIS b: 1791 in Ga. Death: 1808 in Ga ii. Samuel HARRIS b: 1794 in Prince Edward Cty.Va. Marriage 1 Sarah NOLAND b: Abt. 1798 in Morgan Cty, Ga iii. Susannah P. HARRIS b: 4 Mar 1798 in Prince Edward Cty, Va. Marriage 1 Catlett CAMPBELL b: Abt. 1796 in Ga. iv. John Ralph HARRIS b: 1804 in Prince Edward Cty, Va. Death: Oct 1863 in Meriweather Cty, Ga v. Charles B. HARRIS b: 1808 in Morgan Cty.Ga. Marriage 1 Eliza ALLEN b: Abt. 1811 in Morgan Cty, Ga. Marriage 2 Maria HARRIS b: Abt. 1812 in Morgan Cty, Ga The HARRIS's were originally from "The Forks," Hanover, VA and father, William was born ABT 1720 and died ABT 1799. His parents were a Thomas HARRIS and a Mary GILES. Ralph's older brothers, Robert and Thomas, died in Prince Edward Cty.VA on 16 Feb 1784. I assume this was about the time that Ralph got out of VA. I did later find some information on Ralph, Graves and George HARRIS and thid information did not include any information on Robert and Thomas HARRIS so these may have been older boys from a first marriage but such is the way this stuff usually works. My guess is Ralph, George and Graves were born ABT 1755-1765 and I have no idea who was the oldest but the list is usually, George, Graves and Ralph, in that order. The DOB for Graves HARRIS of ABT 1760 is probably pretty close. George may also have been born ABT 1755 and Ralph ABT 1765. Regardless, Graves married Elizabeth BALDWIN and Ralph, Mary McCALL and Agnes BALDWIN. Graves HARRIS died in Nov 1826 in Morgan County, GA, George died in 1816 and the location is not listed and Ralph died in 1815, maybe in Morgan County as other have stated. I have no idea how accorate this information is. John R.
