She was supposedly born 1800 in VA, and died 26 Oct 1853 in Gwinnett Co, GA. I would be interested in her ancestors, siblings or other family connections.
Hello all, Since my last post... I've been off doing "home necessities" and haven't been able to follow-up on with my family's research, for which I truly apologize to all... for being slow coming back. Just for reference... I'll tag my original post at the bottom, but our main CAMPBELL family characters are: Charles CAMPBELL, m. at least twice - therefore multi-married: m. 1. Elizabeth [Campbell or Belinden, Bellenden, Balendine] ... only know she died between.... 1770-1800 ... reputed that Levi [Levy] CAMPBELL was her only son Levi m. Sarah WATKINS, b. 1763 Johnston Co. NC 2. ___?____; if tradition's true then Eliz. d. bfr 1770 poss. mother of Charles CAMPBELL (Jr); d. 1822 Morgan Co. GA minor children recorded in his Will Laurany CAMPBELL; m. 1st, Benjamin WATKINS d. Oglethorpe Co. GA m. 2nd, Sherwood DAVIS both Laurany & Sherwood d. AL or MS 3. June 1800, Mrs. Richard [Milly HORN] Bailey orig. from Wake Co. NC... married in Oglethorpe Co GA no known children from this last union In my earlier post, I forgot to list also a Keziah CAMPBELL, who married another WATKINS sibling.... Moses WATKINS. They had several children, but Keziah died when these were very small, circa 1806. Moses WATKINS then re-married, and the history for Keziah was lost, but we strongly suspect that she was a sibling of Levi, Charles Jr, and Laurany CAMPBELL. John Clarke graciously replied to my CAMPBELL inquiry with some information that I find rather intriguing in regards to areas that I hadn't previous thought to research. THANK YOU... VERY MUCH... I will definitely follow-up. < GRIN > In looking thru John's post about Hampton Co SC... I noticed some familiar names, at least familiar in that they appear in the children and grandchildren of Levi CAMPBELL-Sarah WATKINS. One shows up in their children, Levi Hampton CAMPBELL, and to keep the confusion down... this younger Levi went by "Hampton". Vermilion Parish LA was predominently French-Acadien at that time.... and the use of a middle name [and maiden names] was a basic standard. It's how come Sarah's descendants knew WATKINS, and used it as a middle name, but we haven't yet found any HAMPTON family connection so maybe this is more of a location being noted. Also have BRYAN [BRYANT] in later CAMPBELL descendants in LA. My information is that they were from GA too. Possibly related??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John wrote: Re: CAMPBELL - 1800-1840.... Spring Roll Call Josiah DANIEL (ABT 1736-1825), s/o Thomas DANIEL-Elizabeth LANIER of Tyrrell County, NC, m. an Elizabeth MAY, first, in 1772, m. a Mrs. Sarah CAMPBELL, second, in 1795. They lived in Danielton, Hampton County, SC. I do not know anything more about Mrs. CAMPBELL but there are CAMPBELL connections all over the Screven County, GA archives. Notice the BRYAN connection in this DANIEL family in the marriage of Josiah's son, William. A connection we also see in the COFFEE, HEARD, DANIEL families of Greene County, GA. Josiah was a brother of Thomas DANIEL, Jr. who m. Sarah BURNEY and lived in Greene County, GA. All I know about Sarah was -- she was born ABT 1750 in Effingham County, GA and CAMPBELL was her married name. I also know this about this DANIEL bunch - "dey want po." <grin> Josiah and Elizabeth's children: 1. William DANIEL born ABT 1774 m. Margaret BRYAN 2. Elizabeth DANIEL b. ABT 1775 m. Col. Most of my research has been in Wilkes and Oglethorpe Co's... so this is all new to me. THEN... in the next Morgan Co. digest... I spotted the following post by Linda < neecamp@yahoo.com > and started to wonder..... Joseph Calvin (or Campbell) RANKIN (b. 18 Apr 1816 UNK, d. 4 Apr 1871 Cherokee Co., AL), it is believed resided in Morgan Co, GA prior to 1870. It appears he resided with one Robert Caldwell RANKIN, who m. Elizabeth (Betsy) AKINS (b. 1818 Morgan Co., GA), in Morgan County in the mid-1800s It is not known for sure if Robert was Joseph's father. Joseph m. Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM before 1866, probably in AL. (d/o Alexander and Mary [her surname unk] GRAHAM) Their children were Robert Russell, Henry Emma, and Joseph Alexander. It is likely that this was his second marriage, but I have no confirmation of a first. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please respond to.... neecamp@yahoo.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What I started to wonder was, if this was where our GA > LA line came up with the name ... for a grandson named Rankin CAMPBELL. YES... this makes me wonder what the relationship was to my line, since our CAMPBELL family has a so far well proven - naming pattern. None of us has ever figured out... just where "RANKIN" came from. It just goes to show that asking one question... can create positive clues to follow, and... can definitely start more questions!!! Many thanks to all who sent suggestions and clues. YOU HELPED!! John, actually George Washington BROWN b. 1851 was one of 11 children and this family WAS from ELBERT County - ELBERT was crawling with BROWNs, and I am sure that most were related somehow back to this huge family - and I need to work more on this and try to connect my BOWEN cousin's BROWN family with my own. I am sure they are connected - just have not worked it out yet. George Washington BROWN was first married to Nancy A. J. HOLBROOK who died between 1880 and 1881 - they had two sons, Charlie E. BROWN b. 1878 and Madison M. BROWN b. `1880 but d. 1881, probably at the same time as his mother. I have a lot of cemetery lists to go through in this family that hopefully will give me more information on all the children of George Washington BROWN (13 in all) and his 5 brothers, but so far no John Andrew BROWN. Elizabeth Ann CUNNINGHAM was from HART county - but not the BROWN family. Diane ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. Yes, you are right. That James CUNNINGHAM was born 1720 in VA and I do not think there is any way he could be the father of an Anne CUNNINGHAM who got married in 1851. However, he was the probably an ancestor of most Greene and Morgan County, GA CUNNINGHAMS. Since you list the name of George Washington BROWN of Hart County, GA, was he related to John Andrew BROWN (1843-1923) and Lucinda Matilda Frances JONES (1845-1930) of Hartwell, Hart County, GA? These BROWNS were originally from Elbert County, GA. John Andrew BROWN and Lucinda were the parents of William Leighton BROWN (1866-1895) who married Fannie Williams HUNTER (1872-1957) of Stephens, Oglethorpe County, GA. Fannie was the d/o Nathan HUNTER (1841-1883) and Sarah Caroline RICHTER (1842-1908), my Grand Aunt. Fannie also married a Jonathan BROWN after the death of her first husband, according to my notes but I do not have any other details on him. . John R. Must be a different James CUNNINGHAM since the one that I have married Elizabeth Ann HENDERSON and was the father of my ggggrandmother, Elizabeth Ann CUNNINGHAM b. HART CO. who married George Washington BROWN b. 1851 ELBERT CO. He was the son of Edward Herndon BROWN b. 1813 ELBERT CO and Elizabeth Ann HERNDON b. 1817 ELBERT CO (yes, they were cousins which explains some of my family!) Diane, James CUNNINGHAM (1720-1780) of Charlotte County, VA married Anne THOMASON (ABT 1718-1788), also of Charlotte County, VA. I have often looked at this bunch, which we DANIEL researchers refer to as the KELSO-DANIEL, for links to my DANIEL bunch but I have not found them, there. They did meet the financial and professional profiles of my DANIEL family but they do not contain the right collateral links. As you probably know, THOMASON was also a Madison name. I also may not have listed all of the children in this list, only those that I have from this family. The DANIEL family associated with the Greene County bunch are referred to by me as the "Cunningham-Daniels" for use of a better name. I also understand there are basically no CUNNINGHAMS left in Madison, GA. However, there were a few early DANIELS in Morgan County, GA with the middle initial of "C." but I think this initial stood for COLEMAN and not CUNNINGHAM and this was from the COLEMAN family, also of Greene County, GA. James and Anne Thomason CUNNINGHAM had: i.Sarah CUNNINGHAM (ABT 1747-1815) married John DANIEL ii. Elizabeth CUNNINGHAM (ABT 1747-AGFT 1797) married James DANIEL II moved to Greene County, GA iii. Samuel CUNNINGHAM (1751-1805) married Jean DANIEL iv. Ann CUNNINGHAM born ABt 1755 married Andrew HANNAH v. List, In my research of various families , I seem to find on about three different occasions that the heirs of the Rev War Vet, at least, thought they were entitled to the Rev War Vet's 'land grants' and other grants that the Congress had made or would make in the future, Even if the Vet was no longer alive. Compared to politicking in the land lotteries, some of the heirs made outrages claims. For instance a widow (from the Vets third marriage) claimed that she and her children were the only survivors of the Vet. The Vet had about ten children from the two previous marriage, all alive, except the wives. Another case, a widow left in her will, that any land, money, etc that may be entitled to her as being the only surviving wife of the 1812 vet, was to be given to one of the Vet's granddaughters. The third case was a sister and brother add odds with each other over re-claiming their father's due from the Government when the 90 year old Vets own personal pension claim was repeatedly turned down by young Army officers that would not accept the Vets affidavit of his service in Georgia because they couldn't confirm his name with records that were available in Washington in 1838, some 56 years after the War. The heirs never received any results, even thought they stilled pursued the claim into the 1850s. Harold
Linda, It is funny you mention RANKIN and AL. I carry several RANKINS who were around various members of the DANIEL family which is my primary area of interest. David RANKIN married a Mary MOORE of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Hugh MOORE and Margaret FITZGERALD who later migrated to Chambers County, AL -- the same place that some of the FITZPATRICKS of Morgan County, GA also migrated to. The FITZPATRICKS are tied to my Morgan County, GA DANIEL-RICHTER bunch. The children of David and Mary married a B. W. JONES, John W. DANIEL, and a Mary P. -- all before 1860 but I have no other information on them. The CALDWELLS also interest me. I have a CALDWELL family that migrated from Somerset County, Maryland to Green County, North Carolina and then to Jefferson County, GA. The family of Spencer, Robert and Simon CALDWELL and I know there were collateral links between Burke, Jefferson and Morgan County, GA in my DANIEL family so I assume there may have been in other families. . There is a CALDWELL family that was collateral with the James CUNNINGHAM and Anne THOMSON family of Charlotte County, VA. Some of these CUNNGHAMS later migrated to Greene County, GA and are tied to one of the DANIEL families of Greene County -- the Cunningham DANIEL family. I do not think these DANIEL families were related and there were other DANIEL families in Greene County, GA. I get the sneaky feeling that siblings of some families moved into Burke and their siblings into Greene County, GA. Later, their children migrated into Jefferson County, GA and their nieces and nephews into Morgan County, GA. In other words -- when a family migrated to GA, they split up with some parts of some families moving into Burke County, GA and their siblings into Greene County, GA or that general area. They may have done this so as to facilitate the families overall claim to Revolutionary War land grants because Louisville, Jefferson County, GA was the State Capitol for about 10 years before the capitol was moved to Milledgeville, Baldwin County, GA. Or, a older brother moved to Burke, got the land grants for their younger siblings, based on their father's RS service, and their younger bothers later moved to Greene County, GA or that general area. As most may know, there was a lot of politicking in the acquisition of these land grants, especially the early ones..... John R. I am looking for Joseph Calvin (or Campbell) RANKIN (b. 18 Apr 1816 UNK, d. 4 Apr 1871 Cherokee Co., AL), whom, it is believed resided in Morgan County, Georgia, prior to 1870. It appears he resided with one Robert Caldwell RANKIN, who married Elizabeth (Betsy) AKINS (1818 Morgan Co., GA), in Morgan County in the mid-1800s, but it is not known for sure if Robert was Joseph's father. Joseph married Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM (d/o Alexander and Mary [surname unknown] GRAHAM) before 1866, probably in Alabama. Their children were Robert Russell, Henry Emma, and Joseph Alexander. It is likely that this was his second marriage, but I have no confirmation of a first. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please respond to neecamp@yahoo.com. Surnames HARRIS and ARNOLD. Seaborn Harris married Emily Arnold. Parents William Harris and Sarah Persival. William Harris died @ 1838 in Morgan Co. The family moved to Sabine CO. Texas and got land by 1840. Still looking for anyone related, maybe someone in GA. or somewhere inbetween. I feel that there must have been more siblings. There was a Theophilus that was a doctor, I believe he moved to Atlanta to practice medicine. But have been unable to locate details about the ARNOLD'S OR THE HARRIS' in Morgan Co. This is my brick wall. William and Sarah were believed to have been married in Greenbriar, WV. around 1783. Any information about these individuals would be greatly appreciated. Good Afternoon: In my more romantic days I felt a commonality of religion would play a large part in our ancestor's selection of a spouse but I have found that to be nothing but a 20th century notion. In the post Colonial period a man usually married strictly for money, privilege or power and this would continue probably until at least the end of the 19th Century. So, throw out any notion that "Methodists only married Methodists" and "Baptists only married Baptists," because they would marry just anybody if "the price was right," or a rich widow or widower at twice the price. In fact, a young man might well be a Presbyterian on Monday, a Baptist on Wednesday, a Catholic on Friday and go to church at the Methodist Church on Sunday, so as to keep their options open. Like the current joke about the man who was looking for a widow with a boat -- all he wanted in reply was a picture of the boat. <grin> In this case, all they wanted was a picture of their plantation and those "cotton fields back home." <grin> John R. RE: CAMPBELL Josiah DANIEL (ABT 1736-1825), son of Thomas DANIEL and Elizabeth LANIER of Tyrrell County, NC, married an Elizabeth MAY, first, in 1772, and a Mrs. Josiah was a brother of Thomas DANIEL, Jr. who married Sarah BURNEY and lived in Greene County, GA. All I know about Sarah was -- she was born ABT 1750 in Effingham County, GA and CAMPBELL was her married name. I also know this about this DANIEL bunch - "dey want po." <grin> Josiah and Elizabeth's children: 1. William DANIEL born ABT 1774 married Margaret BRYAN 2. Elizabeth DANIEL b. ABT 1775 married Col. Hi, I recently uncovered some very interesting information relating to the above families. I know the family of Peter COFFEE, Sr. and Sarah SMITH are tied to the HEARD, DANIEL, BRYAN and RANDALL families and the DANIEL family of Greene County, GA is also tied to the BURNEYS, also of Greene and later, Morgan County, GA. What I did not know until recently was the DANIEL family of Greene County, GA (Thomas DANIEL, Jr. married Sarah BURNEY, d/o Simon) was this DANIEL family was also a part of the Thomas DANIEL, Sr. and Elizabeth LANIER family of Tyrrell County, NC -- the ancestors of most of the GA DANIEL family. This DANIEL family also has links to the LANE family of Craven/Jones County, NC through the BRYANS -- a Penelope BRYAN (1733-1794) married a Levin LANE (ABt 1730-1790). As most also know this BRYAN family is also the same BRYAN family that migrated to Thomas County, GA - the Hardy BRYAN bunch. Also, this DANIEL family has links to Burke County, GA because more than one of the children of Thomas's brothers, Ens. Aaron DANIEL RS-SC of Cheraw District, SC and Capt. Robert Lanier DANIEL of Pitt County, NC, migrated through Burke County, GA on their way to other locations and one of these locations was Thomas County, GA. In my DANIEL bunch of Burke and later, Jefferson County, GA, I have links to three places -- North Carolina, Morgan County and Thomas County, GA. The VALLOTTON family of Burke County, GA has stated the ancestors of my DANIEL bunch from Burke County, GA were a Robert C. DANIEL (ABt 1765-AFT 1830) and a Penelope LANE (1773-1846). I have a copy of the 1846 obit of a Penelope DANIEL, as published in the SC edition of the Southern Christian Advocated, and it states she was the widow of Robert DANIEL of Burke County, GA and they had migrated to Burke County, GA in 1812 from NC. One of their sons, Robert W. DANIEL (1809-1865) married as his 4th wife, Mary Jane RENEAU (1830-1912) in 1852 in Jefferson County, GA. Her brother, Russell R. RENEAU (1832-1862) was in business with one of the BRYAN boys in Thomasville, where Russell was the owner and editor of the Thomasville paper (the Southern-Enterprise) before the CW. He died in the CW in 1862. However, his niece (the daughter of RWD and MJR) married John C. RICHTER, Sr. of Madison in 1872 and with this marriage this whole family has then gone full circle. Russell R. RENEAU also married a CHASTAIN girl in Thomasville in 1855 and she was the d/o of a John "Jack" CHASTAIN and a Mary CARLTON and I think her father, the Hon. John CARLTON of Thomas County, was part of the Henry and Thomas CARLTON families of Morgan County, GA. The key to developing this relationship came only after I figured out that the Thomas DANIEL, who married Sarah BURNEY, was a son of Thomas DANIEL, Sr. and Elizabeth LANIER of Tyrrell County, NC. Information from that family stated he married a BARNEY and one can see how the name BURNEY could be confused with the name, BARNEY. Then, and only then, the pieces of this puzzle started to fall into play. I still have not figured out, exactly, who was the parent of Robert C. DANIEL of Burke County, GA but I am now pretty certain he was out of this DANIEL family but his father could have been Thomas or one of his brothers, Aaron RS-SC or Capt. Robert Lanier DANIEL. So, the Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) who married John C. RICHTER, Sr. in 1872 was indeed a descendant of one of the founding families of Morgan County, GA - the BRYANS and the LANES and probably the WHITFIELDS, just like WT BACON (1869-1944), longtime publisher of the Madisonian, had stated in her 1924 obit. "Sorry WT" for ever doubting you. <grin> A UGA honor graduate, good journalist and close family friend, like you were, did know what you were talking about. John R. Good morning all, Since our List boss says we're open for a Roll Call... I thought that I'd throw my hat into the arena for any info regarding a CAMPBELL line that arrived in Morgan Co. GA circa 1800 ..... from the Oglethorpe and Wilkes Co's area. We CAMPBELL descendants have long been hoodwinked into believing that our Levi [Levy] CAMPBELL [b.pre-1763-d.1817] was an only child. Clues have been mounting to indicate that he had a brother, Charles, who may have migrated BEFORE 1807 to Morgan Co. GA, and a sister named Laurany [Lurany]. There may have been more siblings... Levi CAMPBELL's parentage was; Charles CAMPBELL m. Elizabeth [BELINDEN or CAMPBELL] Levi CAMPBELL m. Sarah WATKINS, d/o Reace [Reech] WATKINS Laurany m. 1st, Benjamin WATKINS, s/o Reace [Reech] WATKINS m. 2nd, Sherwood DAVIS We have found recorded land records 1796 [purchase] and 1800 [sale] that prove father/son relationship with a witness, Charles CAMPBELL, on the original purchase and then on the 1800 sale back, the name for his stepmother. She had to "X" her acknowledgement of sale. We had known that a Charles CAMPBELL m. a Millie BAILY in 1800 but hadn't found anything to prove who they were until the land records. These land actions were in Oglethorpe Co. GA. Also on these land records was a witness, Aaron DAVIS, brother of Sherwood DAVIS... 2nd husband of widow, Laurany [CAMPBELL] Watkins. So a general connection has now been confirmed and we're working on proving the familial connection between Levi, Charles Jr & Laurany. Levi CAMPBELL did reside in the part of Wilkes Co, that later was to become Ogelthorpe Co., from abt 1785-87 to 1807-1809. Levi CAMPBELL did participate, w/ claimed Rev. War Service, in the land lottery of 1807. This land was then sold about 1809-1810 to finance their move to Vermilion Parish LA. I can find Tax and Census records for them up to, and after 1810... but not for that year. Apparently they were in transit during all of 1810... no land sale, or purchase for that year have been found. There was a Charles CAMPBELL in Morgan Co., d. 1822, who might have been our Levi's brother.... and it is possible that Charles Sr may also have resided in Morgan Co. for a time. At this time, we don't have any evidence to gauge this Charles' age at his death, but there are known to be guardianship records for this man's children. The ONLY thing we know for certain about Elizabeth is that she apparently was deceased before June of 1800... as that's when Charles Sr re-married to a widow, Mrs. Richard [Milly HORN] BAILEY. Both are reported to be of advanced age... with grown children, and no further children were noted for these two. It is our 'tradition' that Charles Sr, and wife Milly, migrated with Levi to LA... residing [and d.] there on Levi's LA property. So far... we have NOT found evidence to back this tradition up. Since our 'tradition' is that Levi was the only child of Elizabeth it is entirely possible that Charles Sr may have multi-married, so that Charles Jr and Laurany had a different mother, of unk name. Is there anyone out there researching this Charles CAMPBELL d.1822 as I'd really like to match some notes and see where we can go... Thank you all for your time and assistance, Lisa Grimes a descendant of: Levi CAMPBELL m. Sarah WATKINS ______________________________

I am the great-granddaughter of John W. Stark b 1833, Walton County and Rebecca Malcom b. 1838 Walton County. John was the son of William Evans STARK b. 1796 in Wilkes County but migrated to Morgan County long enough to meet Epsey B. BUTLER b. 1806 Walton County but married 25 Nov 1824 in Morgan County. Prior to Epsey's birth the BUTLER family, Jesse BUTLER b. 1768 Pennsylvania and Mary MYHAND (no infomation known) lived in Morgan County where several of their children were born - and it seems like somewhere down the line they returned from Walton to Morgan once again - so I am thinking that perhaps the MYHAND family was from Morgan County so that is the family I am searching for... any help would be greatly appreciated.
