Hi, I am very interested in the WHITFIELD family of Morgan County, Ga. The only WHITFIELD I can find listed at World Connect from Morgan County, GA was a Nancy Ann WHITFIELD (1815-1837) who married a Silas ELLIS. I am sure there were WHITFIELDS in Morgan County because they owned one of the first cotton mills in Morgan County, GA. I am sure the WHITFIELDS and the JORDANS were thicker then thieves in an around Morgan County, GA. I also know there was a Whitfield's District in Morgan County, GA I would almost bet they were out of the William WHITFIELD (1689-1770) and Mary Elizabeth GOODMAN (1695-ABT 1730)family of Dobbs County, NC. Their kids married into the O'DANIEL, BRYAN, GRANDY, WARREN, OUTLAW, POWELL, HERRING, WILLIAMS. WINKFIELD and BECK mostly around Dobbs County, NC and St. David's District, SC or areas in between. Thanks, in advance. John R. Clarke Feel free to visit my website at: www.outdoorwriter.com

Sorry, it was a typo. She was born in 1789 but you should have known that from the date her daughter was born (1808) because 9 year olds are generally incapable of giving birth to a child. Sometimes when you type 60+ WPM on a keyboard mistakes like this happen. I proof and spell check all messages, which catch most of the blatant errors, but it is hard to catch a transposition error even if you are looking right at them. The information in my PAF was correct and it just got transposed when I copied it to the message. Whenever I read some information about a particular family member or collateral and I have doubts about it, I usually go to World Connect and search for information about that family in order to correct it. You will be surprised how often you will find the exact information, there. In case you have never been to the search page at World Connect, its URL is: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi I think the best thing for you to do is to go to Alice Gedge's information on this family and look it what she has for this family. Just go to World Connect and type in the name GLEN, Catherine Jones in the appropriate boxes and then follow the links to her research. This is not my research but her information looks generally pretty good and is well documented. You may even find some information of more of your family members in her information, not that I believe every scrap of genealogical information I see at World Connect - I don't...... John R. In the statement below, you say that Catherine Jones Glen was born in 1799 and that she married John Grimes Jr., 1806. That would have made her 7 years old. The date you give for her daughter's birth (Sarah Jones Grimes) is 1808. That would have made Catherine 9 years old when Sarah was born. Shouldn't Catherine's year of birth be earlier than 1799? Hi John Thank you so much for the clarification on GRIMES. I am interested in that line because it connects with my NICHOLSON/NICKELSON line. Ann, I do not know how that came about -- it must have been late and there were lots of Johns in all of this. Dr. John GRIMES, Jr. was the son of John GRIMES, Sr. RS-VA (1758-AFT 1804) and Elizabeth Terrell WINGFIELD (1755-1792) of Greene County, GA. Elizabeth was the d/o Thomas WINGFIELD III and Elizabeth TERRELL of Washington, Wilkes County, GA and before that Louisa County, VA. Dr. John GRIMES, Jr. married Catherine Jones GLEN (1799-1840), d/o Judge John GLEN, Esq. (1744-1799) and Sarah JONES (d. 1804) of Savannah, on 11 Feb 1806 in Savannah, Chatham County, GA. The d/o Dr. John GRIMES, Jr. and Catherine Jones GLEN, Sarah Jones GRIMES (1808-1847), married James POTTER (1793-1862) on 4 Jan 1827 in Savannah, Chatham County, GA. James was the son of John POTTER, Esq. (1765-1849) and Sarah FULLER (1769-1848) of Charleston. James POTTER and his wife, Sarah Jones GRIMES are buried with the STOCKTONS in Trinity Church, Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey. John POTTER and his wife, Sarah FULLER, are also buried there but some of their children are buried in St. Michael's Church, Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. John GRIMES, Jr. and his wife, Catherine Jones GLEN, are buried in Old Colonial Cemetery, Savannah, Chatham, Georgia. There seems to be a rather close connection in many Morgan County, GA families between the cities of Savannah, Charleston, Augusta, Philadelphia and various areas in NJ. You probably do not know it but the MUSTINS of Madison, whose family were big merchants in Augusta, like John POTTER were in Charleston, originally migrated from Davenport, England into Philadelphia and they had family there, too. Their MUSTIN family, there, ran cotton mills, much like the CALLOWAYS and others did in GA. Dr. GRIMES also went to medical school in Philadelphia and a lot of young ladies went to finishing school (Miss Picot's School is mentioned as one of them) there, too, in later years. This whole bunch is loaded with connections to Philadelphia in various ways. The RICHTERS also had connections to the same areas of NJ as the STOCKTONS. The mother of Anne Eliza Potter RICHTER (1808-1863) was a Margaret WHITE (1788-1849) and her father was a Captain John WHITE, USN and her mother was a Margaret HARTSHORNE, both of the Somerset, Monmouth County, NJ area before migrating to St. Croix, DWI, where he was a ship captain after the RW. Notice, also, the US Navy connection of both Captain John WHITE and Commodore Richard Field STOCKTON who married on of John POTTER's daughters. I have always assumed the RICHTERS had help and stayed with family during their migration from St. Croix to Madison. We know they were in St. Croix in Oct 1836 when Anna Maria (later Mrs. Milton Anthony MUSTIN, Esq.) was born and in Madison by August 1838 when Charles W. RICHTER, Jr. was born. We also know they were in transit to the US in April of 1837 because Anna Maria was christened on board a British man-of-war during this trip. This leaves a little over a year for Charles, Sr and Anne Eliza to be in transit from Charleston to Madison. We also know the reason that Charles, Sr. decided to stay in Madison, was because Anne Eliza was pregnant with Charles, Jr.. This tells me they had to have some help along the way and I would almost bet money they stayed with some of her family in Charleston during this migration to Madison. Who they were, has not come down to us in family lore. I am also not exactly sure all of the information provided about John POTTER, Esq. in the History of Princeton, NJ is exactly correct because I know there were POTTERS in Charleston much earlier than John's migration there in the late 1700's. A Thomas POTTER was mentioned and provided for in the 1718 will of Governor Robert DANIELL of Charleston. I also know the WATHLINGTON name is a Charleston name and one of the children of Arthur POTTER of St. Croix received this as a middle name. I also know the BOLTONS were of Charleston and one of Arthur's daughters married a George BOLTON. There are just too many ties in this overall family to the Charleston area for these two POTTER families not to be related, not to mention the later marriage of Mary Jane Reneau DANIEL (1830-1912) to Professor Winfield Montgomery RIVERS, sr. (1825-1905) whose family was from James Island, SC. Mary Jane was the mother of Alice Elizabeth DANIEL who married John RICHTER, Charles and Anne Eliza's youngest son. RIVERS was also the father of Harriett Elise RIVERS, known as Hallie, who married John's older brother, Martin L. RICHTER, Sr. in 1866. We also know the STOCKTONS of Princeton, NJ were Presbyterian but the John POTTER family of Charleston was Church of England. We also know that Anne Eliza POTTER (wife of Charles W RICHTER, Sr) was probably also Church of England because their child, Anna Maria, was christened by the English chaplain on their trip to the US in 1837. We also know from family lore that Sir Arthur POTTER, Governor General of the Dutch West Indies, was of English descent. If John POTTER of Charleston was a typical Irishman, he would not have been a member of the Church of England, would he? He would have been Catholic, so this tells me that John POTTER of Charleston was also of English descent. In fact, John POTTER founded and helped build an Episcopal Church in Princeton, NJ after he moved there from Charleston. This latter may be the reason my bunch has passed down the stories of Arthur's brother, a John POTTER, being associated with the Episcopal Church. However, John POTTER did not die in Princeton, NJ but in Anson County, NC, where more than a few of the families of Greene and Morgan County, GA had their roots, especially the BURNEYS who are tied rather closely with the WINGFIELDS. I do not know the answer to all of this but these two POTTER families sure "smell" like parts of the same family, especially with the STOCKTON connections that show up in the family of Alice Elizabeth DANIEL - her grandmother was a STOCKTON and her family was from Princeton. I also cannot say that Alice's DANIEL family of Burke and Jefferson County, GA had links to the Thomas DANIEL, Jr. and Sarah BURNEY family of Greene County, GA but that is a real possibility. It is also a possibility they descend from the Gov. Robert DANIELL family of Charleston. This latter DANIELL family has always been one of my first choices because Dr. Anne KILPATRICK (b. 1910), my cousin from Atlanta, told me that when she was a girl her mother, Eva Pauline RICHTER, told her the DANIEL family that lived behind them in Athens was related to them. I now know who this DANIEL family was and they were descendants of Gov. Robert DANIELL of Charleston. I also know the DANIELL family of Clarke County, GA was involved in some kind of probate matter with the PONDER and MALCOLM families, who were collateral in Morgan County, GA, around 1860. I also know John Harris PONDER, Sr. (1786-1864) married a Lucy CARLTON, d/o Henry CARLTON, Esq. of Madison. I also know that Henry's brother, John CARLTON, Esq. married Nancy Ann ALDERMAN of Washington County, GA and their daughter, Mary CARLTON, married John CHASTAIN of Thomas County, GA. Their daughter, Sophronia Edna CHASTAIN married Russell R. RENEAU (1832-1862) in 1855. Russell ran the newspaper in Thomasville, GA before the CW. Russell, who was killed at the Battle of South Mountain, MD in 1862, was a younger brother of Mary Jane RENEAU (1830-1912), who married Robert W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865) of Bethany, Jefferson County, GA in 1852. Mary Jane and Robert were the parents of Alice Elizabeth DANIEL and remember who she married - John RICHTER of Madison. Also, Alice's youngest son, J.C. RICHTER, Jr. married Lucille PONDER (1895-1973), great granddaughter of James Harris PONDER and Lucy CARLTON. See how circular it gets. My problem is -- I cannot complete the circle on the family of Robert W. DANIEL of Jefferson County, GA but we know from historical records that his daughter, Alice E. DANIEL,.descended from one of the founding families of Morgan County, GA - so stated W. T. BACON in her 1924 obit. Who this DANIEL family was -- I have only a few clues and these are conflicting. That's one thing I know about these families -- they may bounce around from one family to another but sooner or later their descendants will come back to their main collaterals and re-establish these circular connections, once again. This is what I look for when I hit up against these stone walls, like I have with my DANIEL bunch....... John R. Good Evening: In my research of the STOCKTON Family of Princeton, Mercer County, NJ and a POTTER family of Charleston, Charleston County, SC I came across some very interesting connections. For the past several months I have looked rather closely at the John POTTER (1765-1849) family of Charleston as being possibly related to my POTTER bunch out of St. Croix, Dutch West Indies. Most persons who are familiar with the early families of Morgan County know the RICHTERS of Madison descend from the RICHTER and POTTER families of St. Croix. In fact, Anne Eliza POTTER (1808-1863) is buried in the Madison City Cemetery with her husband, Charles W. RICHTER, Sr. (1807-1884). We have never been able to assign Anne Eliza's father, Sir. Arthur POTTER (1788-1843), Governor General of the DWI, to a POTTER line but one thing that has come down through the family is that he had a brother named, John POTTER. In Charleston was a merchant named, John POTTER who was married to a Catherine FULLER (1769-1848). According to the story handed down in this family this John POTTER came from Ballymoran, Down, Ireland and founded a merchant empire in Charleston. His two children that I am interested in are his son, James POTTER (1793-1862) and daughter, Harriet Maria POTTER (1801-1862). James POTTER married (2nd) Sarah Jones GRIMES, d/o Dr. John Wesley GRIMES, Jr. and Catherine Jones GLENN of Savannah, Chatham County, GA. His sister, Harriett Maria POTTER married Commodore Robert Field STOCKTON, USN of Princeton, Mercer County, NJ. One of Dr. James GRIMES, Jr. and Sarah Jones GLENN's daughters, Catherine Elizabeth POTTER (b. 1829) married Phillip POULLAIN (b. 1824) , s/o Thomas Noel POULLAIN and Harriet Byron WRAY if Greensboro, Greene County, GA. Phillip was a younger brother of Antoine POULLAIN, Sr (1815-1900) who married Rebecca Louisa LAMAR (1841-1878), d/o George Washington LAMAR and Sarah Walker HARLOW and Antoine and Rebecca were the ancestors of many of the POULLAIN family of Madison, GA. Catherine and Phillip POULLAIN lived in Greensboro, Greene County, GA, which brings us to another Morgan County, GA connection in this bunch. The father of Sarah Jones GRIMES was Dr. John Wesley GRIMES, Jr and he was the son of John W. GRIMES, Sr. RS-VA and Elizabeth Terrell WINGFIELD of Greensboro, Greene County, GA. I am sure I do not have to tell Morgan County, GA researcher how many families from this area descend from the TERRELL and WINGFIELD families. This brings us back to the STOCKTONS of Princeton, NJ. I have long known the grandmother of Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) who married John RICHTER of Madison was Elizabeth STOCKTON (1808-1888), who was the wife of Rev. Russell RENEAU (1807-1865) of the GA Conference of the Methodist Church. In fact Elizabeth lived with the RICHTERS in Madison for much of the period after the death of her husband, Rev. RENEAU. Our best information says she was probably the daughter of Samuel STOCKTON, son of Richard STOCKTON, Esq. of Princeton, NJ. Back to Commodore STOCKTON, in 1860 he supervised the building of the USS Monitor for the Navy in NYC. The person who built the Monitor was John ERICCSON, a naval architect who had invented the screw propeller some years before. One of Anne Eliza POTTER's sister was Mary Elizabeth POTTER and like all of the children she was born in St. Croix. Family records say that she married Henry ERICSSON, "brother of the inventor." James, unlike some of his family never left the South but remained in his home in Savannah, where he died in 1862 but his body was interred in the family plot in Trinity Church, Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey. Yet, most of his sons and son in laws served the Confederacy while his brother-in-law was building ships that helped to defeat the south. In fact, James's son, LT. John Hamilton POTTER, CSA of the 63rd GA VIR, was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta and died in Macon, Bibb County, GA some days later. He, too, was buried in Trinity Church, Princeton, Mercer County, New Jersey. All of this is very interesting - family fighting family. John Hamilton POTTER married Annie Beirne STEENBERGEN on 23 Jul 1863 in Savannah, Chatham County, GA (by Bishop Stephen Elliot, Rector of Christ Church) and I would almost bet that "Bernie" is BURNEY, a family long associated with the WINGFIELDS of Morgan and Greene County, GA. I have no proof that John POTTER of Charleston and Sir Arthur POTTER of St.Croix are related but I would almost bet they were due to these circular connections and these connection go all the way through, New Jersey, Philadelphia, PA, Charleston, Savannah and end up, once again, in Madison, Morgan County, GA GA when Alice Elizabeth DANIEL marries John RICHTER, Sr. in 1872. I also have not been able to dig my DANIEL family of Burke and Jefferson County, GA out of the Thomas DANIEL, Jr. and Sarah BURNEY family of Greene County, GA but there are a lot of interesting links to this bunch in my overall family. This Thomas was the son of Thomas DANIEL, Sr. and Elizabeth LANIER of Tyrrell County, NC -- or so it appears and there are Pitt County, NC connections all over his bunch, as well as my bunch in Burke County, GA. However, it is interesting to note that John POTTER died in 1849 at his plantation, named Morven, which is in Anson County, North Carolina, which was the ancestral home of the BURNEYS before they moved to Martin and Pitt County, NC. Commodore Robert STOCKTON and his family also relocated to this plantation after the CW. That different STOCKTON-POTTER allegiances seen in this example are also found in the RENEAU family where cousins also fought cousins during the CW. In 1862 at the Battle of South Mountain, MD, 1st SGT Russell R. RENEAU, Alice DANIEL's uncle, died fighting against a PA Regiment in which his cousin, Lt. Jesse RENO, who also died in this battle, was an officer. This is exactly the reason we in the South revere our ancestors who fought and died in that war, which cost the lives of about 625.000 Americans, we had so many who fought and died on both sides. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vd.2ADE/1109 Message Board Post: I am searching for information on the Thames surname. This name is frequently transcribed as Thomas. In particular a Samuel Thames is listed on the 1818 tax list of Morgan County. He is not listed on any other year's tax list for Morgan. I would like to know if there are any deeds/land records for Samuel Thames or anyone else by the Thames name prior to 1830. Any help is most appreciated.
Good Afternoon, I sent this post to some of my DANIEL researcher friends and I thought I would pass it by you because this is just one, in a series of circular connections that surround some of our Morgan County families. I have another circular connection which I will post later involving the POULLAIN, LAMAR, POTTER and STOCKTON families. <<< Good Afternoon. As you know, I look for circular connections and I found one, today. The George BOULINEAU (1760-1804) family was out of Haiti and part of it later migrated to the Augusta, Richmond County, Ga and Camden County, GA. Descendants of this family tie into the VALLOTTON family of Augusta, Richmond County, GA however one of George's daughters, Mary Rosalie, married a Burrell LATHROP, s/o Azariah LATHROP and Abigail HUNTINGTON of Norwich, CT, of Savannah and their daughter, Mary Amelia LATHROP born 1785 married Charles E. MUSTIN of Augusta, GA. Charles MUSTIN was an older brother of Milton Anthony MUSTIN (1834-1924) who married Anna Maria RICHTER of Madison, Morgan County, GA in 1855 and her younger brother, John RICHTER, married Alice Elizabeth DANIEL in 1872. As relates to the VALLOTTON part of this circle, George Joseph BOULINEAU (1817-1892) married Josephine Savannah VALLOTTON, d/o Francis Stephen VALLOTTON and Sarah TARVER of Keysville, Burke County, GA. Sarah was the d/o Ethelred Jordan TARVER and Mary Nancy ROBINSON and g/d of Samuel TARVER III and Celia JORDAN. She was also a cousin of Lucretia DANIEL (1807-1849). my GGA, and Lucretia married William Allen TARVER of Burke County, GA. Lucretia's younger brother was the father of Alice who married John RICHTER in 1872 - my grandparents.. There is also one other connection maybe someone has some information on. Eli MUSTIN (1794-1878) married a Margaret HARPER of Augusta, GA and her family was from Harpers Ferry, VA. We know from other information that she and Eli were married at the home of her uncle, a Matthew WEAVER, in Philadelphia, PA in 1815. I have a feeling there is a circular connection in this WEAVER and HARPER connection to the MUSTIN family. Eli MUSTIN was the owner of Eli MUSTIN and Sons, Merchants, Augusta. We also know his brother, John MUSTIN was the owner of a cotton mill in Philadelphia. There are many connections in this bunch to well known families of Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA and Augusta, GA. Eli's parents were a George MUSTIN of Plymouth, now Davenport, England and a Mary JIRARD who was of French descent. They migrated to Philadelphia, PA AFT 1800 and Eli and Margaret migrated to Augusta, Richmond County, GA ABT 1818. Any information is appreciated. >>> John R. Hi John I saw your post that mentioned the ATKINSON family. "...Simeon A. ATKINSON in Madison in 1851. Simeon was a younger brother of Atherates A. ATKINSON (1815-1892) who married Martha Jane FORT (1818-1875). The ATKINSONS were originally from Boscawen, Merrimack County, NH but moved to GA in the 1830's." I am looking for information on William NICKELSON/NICHOLSON. His third wife was Elizabeth (Betsy) ATKINSON born about 1816. They were married August 24, 1862 in Greene County, Ga. I was wondering if you have any knowledge of Besty? I show her parents as Nathan and Polly Parker Atkinson married May 28, 1813 in Greene County Georgia. I show Nathan's parents as Thomas P. Atkinson born in Isle of Wight County, Va. who moved to Greene County Georgia and married Flora Wingfield (2nd wife). Thomas was also married to Elizabeth Speed (1st wife). Thank you so much for any help that you can give! Hi, are you talking about the William HARRIS (1774-1825) who married Sarah COFFEE, d/o Peter COFFEE, Jr. and Sarah SMITH of Hancock County, GA. If so, this William appears to have married twice, first to Sarah COFFEE before 1811 and second to a Mary Drew ALSTON in 1811. I do not know who this William's parents were but I would bet he was related to the HARRIS/WALTON line out of Greeneville, VA in some way, especially with that link to the COFFEE family..... According to my information, William HARRIS died in Montgomery County, GA and I have no listings for his kids or where they went.... I track these families because we have so many of the same collateral connections. The BRYANS, the WALTONS, the WYCHES, the COFFEE, and their collaterals are connected to my DANIEL bunch of Burke and Jefferson County, GA but I do not know all of the details of all of these many connections which is why I track them. This whole bunch feed back into my RICHTER family of Madison, GA and my DANIEL family of Burke County, GA, which is attached to this RICHTER family of Madison, is the only one of my paternal lines I cannot tie back to their ancestors. Hi, Most of the early Greene County, GA bunch were connected in various ways and this included the HARRIS, BURNEY, KING, BYNE, LANIER, GOLDWIRE, WADE, COLEMAN, RALLS, WALTON, etc. Not close connections but still connected. This same relationship rolls over into Morgan County, Ga in later years. My problem is -- I know how these families interacted but I do not know all of the connections between Greene/Morgan and my primary area of interest -- Burke County, GA. However, I know there were many connections between Burke and Madison, GA. As in, John Byne WALKER who married Eliza S. FANNIN was born in Burke and his families lived right next to my DANIEL bunch in Burke in 1820. The VARNERS were also from Burke but they moved to AR but their daughter, Josie, married Edward Taylor NEWTON and then W. T. BACON, both of Madison. You might want to say these families were linked up in various ways because it was a class thing. I do not know the reasons for all of the Burke-Morgan connections but I know they exist. My basic reason for trying to understand this relationship is because my DANIEL bunch of Burke County, GA is unattached but they may well be descended from the DANIEL-BURNEY bunch of Greene County, GA. I do know that Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) was married to a Penelope LANE (1773-1846) who I think was a d/o a Levin LANE and Penelope BRYAN. Their grand daughter, Alice E. DANIEL (1854-1924) married John C. RICHTER, Sr. of Madison in 1872. I also have a copy of an 1848 letter from JCR's mother, Anne Eliza Potter RICHTER, to her mother in New York City in which a Dr. WINGFIELD offer's Anne Eliza's younger sister, Mary E. POTTER a job in Madison and we do not have to go very far from the WINGFIELDS to the BURNEYS, do we? Mary E. POTTER, my GGA, came to Madison and married MAJ Simeon A. ATKINSON in Madison in 1851. Simeon was a younger brother of Atherates A. ATKINSON (1815-1892) who married Martha Jane FORT (1818-1875). The ATKINSONS were originally from Boscawen, Merrimack County, NH but moved to GA in the 1830's. The BURNEYS are an interesting bunch and they are primarily from the eastern areas of NC, primarily Bladen and Pitt. Simon BURNEY, Sr. (1720-1787) was married to an HARDY and their daughter, Sarah, married Thomas DANIEL, Jr, son of Thomas DANIEL, Sr. and Elizabeth LANIER of Tyrrell County, NC. Thomas and Sarah migrated, along with Simon, to Greene County, GA. In Greene County, GA, William DANIEL, their son, married Mary KING in 1789. A daughter, Nancy DANIEL married Eden COLEMAN of Greene County, GA. Their daughter, Sarah DANIEL married E. L. W. FTIZSIMMONS. Their daughter, Elizabeth DANIEL married a Peter MARTIN and their son Charles DANIEL married Elizabeth COFFEE, d/o Peter COFFEE, Jr. and Sarah SMITH of Greene County, GA. One of Charles and Elizabeth's sons was Dr. William Coffee DANIEL (1793-1868) who married Martha SCREVAN, d/o Thomas SCREVAN and Mary Ann Susannah SMITH and Dr. DANIEL owned Oglethorpe Plantation in Burke County, GA. I think these DANIELS are all part of the same bunch... All of this bunch had American Express cards. Maybe not as rich as some but not "po" either. <grin> Any thoughts or information you may have are appreciated...... John R.
