Married: 1820 in GA, Marriage 3 Sarah BALDWIN Married: 1838 in VA Ralph and Agnes BALDWIN had: i. Baldwin Burford HARRIS b: 1791 in Ga. Death: 1808 in Ga ii. Samuel HARRIS b: 1794 in Prince Edward Cty.Va. Marriage 1 Sarah NOLAND b: Abt. 1798 in Morgan Cty, Ga iii. Susannah P. HARRIS b: 4 Mar 1798 in Prince Edward Cty, Va. Marriage 1 Catlett CAMPBELL b: Abt. 1796 in Ga. iv. John Ralph HARRIS b: 1804 in Prince Edward Cty, Va. Death: Oct 1863 in Meriweather Cty, Ga v. Charles B. HARRIS b: 1808 in Morgan Cty.Ga. Marriage 1 Eliza ALLEN b: Abt. 1811 in Morgan Cty, Ga. Marriage 2 Maria HARRIS b: Abt. 1812 in Morgan Cty, Ga The HARRIS's were originally from "The Forks," Hanover, VA and father, William was born ABT 1720 and died ABT 1799. His parents were a Thomas HARRIS and a Mary GILES. Ralph's older brothers, Robert and Thomas, died in Prince Edward Cty.VA on 16 Feb 1784. I assume this was about the time that Ralph got out of VA. I did later find some information on Ralph, Graves and George HARRIS and thid information did not include any information on Robert and Thomas HARRIS so these may have been older boys from a first marriage but such is the way this stuff usually works. My guess is Ralph, George and Graves were born ABT 1755-1765 and I have no idea who was the oldest but the list is usually, George, Graves and Ralph, in that order. The DOB for Graves HARRIS of ABT 1760 is probably pretty close. George may also have been born ABT 1755 and Ralph ABT 1765. Regardless, Graves married Elizabeth BALDWIN and Ralph, Mary McCALL and Agnes BALDWIN. Graves HARRIS died in Nov 1826 in Morgan County, GA, George died in 1816 and the location is not listed and Ralph died in 1815, maybe in Morgan County as other have stated. I have no idea how accorate this information is. John R. Estelle, What is interesting about the HARRIS's who moved to TX was that THOMPSON you listed. William Charles RICHTER (1873-1945), the oldest child of John C. RICHTER, Sr. (1848-1907)and Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) moved to Waco, McLennan County, TX BEF 1900 and there married a Lilie THOMPSON (1874-1965) ABT 1898. I do not have any details on her THOMPSON family but she and Willie had only one child, a Charles Montgomery RICHTER (1902-1981). Charles married Mildred LAZENBY (b. 1908) in 1928 and they only had one daughter, Roseanne RICHTER (1829-1953) who was killed in an automobile accident in Lubbock, Lubbock County, TX in 1953. I do know that Mildred was Catholic but do not know whether these THOMPSONS were Catholic or not. I talked with Mildred several years ago. I do not know if she is still alive or not and all of this information is from her. These RICHTERS are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, TX, except for Roseanne who is buried in Lubbock. I have a picture taken ABT 1945 of Willie, Lillie and their grand daughter, Roseanne RICHTER but the location is not listed but I assume, Waco. If anyone has any information on this THOMPSON family, I would love to hear about it. Thanks for this HARRIS information... John R. Dear Kim, I have found your "brick wall." THE HARRISS FAMILY FROM VIRGINIA TO TEXAS "Among the earliest pioneers who emigrated to Morgan County, Georgia were three brothers: Graves, Ralph and George Harris, for they were there when the county was formed. They were sons of William Harriss of Hanover County Virginia (wife not known). All three sons were named as bondsmen to collect debts from their father's water gristmill in Virginia. George was the father of William Harriss who was born in Virginia and married Sarah (born 1764 Virginia, and died 1864 Texas). On January 13, 1806 William Harriss purchased land on the North Side of Hard Labour Creek. (See Settlers on the Appalachee, 1805) by Robert S. Davis, Jr. The known children of William and Sarah were Seaborn, Theophilous, Ausborn and Sarah Phenaty. Ausborn reveived land in the 1827 Land Lottery as well as William's orphans. Ausborn was the executor of his father's will when William died on July 3, 1820, in Morgan County, Georgia. The sons are named on the 1830 census of Morgan County, GA. William Harriss' brand was registered with John Nisbet, Clerk of Morgan Co, on July 29, 1814. In Georgia, the family attended Sandy Creek Baptist Church where is is documented in the church minutes that Sarah, Ausborn, Seaborn and Theophilous had "gone to Texas." After William's death on July 3, 1820, the family left Morgan County, GA and came to Sabine Co., Texas prior to 1837 when Texas was a Republic, where they all received land grants for 640 acres. It is believed that a daughter, Phenaty Harriss Thompson, wife of William Alston Thompson, who had previously moved to Texas and appears on the 1835 Sabine County, Texas Census, along with the lure of free land were the motivation for the move. In 1839, Sarah, Theophilous, Seaborn, Ausborn and William D. appear on the tax roll. So we know that they arrived three years prior because they had to be in the Republic of Texas three years prior to reveiving a land grant. Sarah continued to live in Sabine Co, for the remainder of her life. On the tax rolls her sons are referred to as "agents" for her. In 1844, Theophilous named Sarah as "Mother." Sarah kept the land she received until her death. She also listed on the tax roll three slaves which she kept until the end of the Civil War. Sarah was born in Virginia in 1764 and died in Texas in 1864, a very courageous lady. Ausborn married Louisa Benge on January 27, 1830, in Morgan County, Georgia. Issue of Ausborn and Louisa Benge Harris: (1) Frances Harriss, born 1831, Georgia; (2) William D. Harriss, born 1834 Georgia; (3) Susan M. Harriss, born 1836 Georgia; (4) George Roderick Harriss, born 1838 Alabama; (5) Theophilious A. Harriss, born 1846 Texas. Ausborn reported 1840 acres, plus his 640 acres on the tax roll for 1853. He apparently brought four slaves with him to Texas. In 1844 he reported 1585 acres of land, seven slaves and one clock. Ausborn's land holdings were numerous until his death in 1862 or 1863. Because the courthouse burned in Sabine County, the probate records were not available. Ausborn served as County Treasurer for Sabine County in the years 1854-1858. Seaborn married Emily Arnold on December 4, 1833 in Morgan county, GA. On the 1850 census in Sabine County, Texas, Emily's brothers were James E. Arnold (age 22) and Thomas S. Arnold (age 23) both from Georgia, were living with Emily and Seaborn. On the 1860 Sabine County census, James B. Arnold, Emily's father, is living next door to Seaborn and Emily. Seaborn settled the estate of James B. Arnold, Emily's father. Seaborn is reported to have built the double log cabin in Geneva. Issue of Seaborn and Emily Harriss: (1) William D. Harriss, born 1838 Georgia; (2) Mary E. Harriss, born 1840 Texas; (3) Margaret M. Harriss (Pinkie) born 1842, Texas, married Samuel N. Strother, son of Thompson Strother; (4) Matilda E. Harris born 1844 Texas; (5) Malinda E. Harriss, born April 5, 1845, Texas; married her first cousin, Robert Thomas Harriss, son of Theophilous Harriss. She died May 24, 1897 and is buried beside her husband at Pleasant Hill Cemnetery, Rusk County, Texas. (6) James W. Harris, born 1848, Texas; (7) Phenaty E. Harriss, born 1850, Texas; (8) John T. Harriss, born 1851, Texas; (9) Sarah F. Harriss, born 1854, Texas; (10) Seaborn A. Harriss, born 1856, Texas. After Emily's death, Seaborn married Nancy, last name unknown, . Issue of Seaborn and Nancy: Ada Harriss, born 1866, Sabine County, Texas, and Adelia Harriss, born 1869, Sabine County, Texas. Seaborn last appeared on the 1883 tax roll. He is listed as having two horses, eight cows, nine hogs. The preceding year he listed on carriage/buggy. He died at the age of 68 and is buried in an unmarked grave at the King Family Cemetery, Geneba, Sabine County, Texas. The graves with the large concrete slabs are thought to be Seaborn and Emily." Kim, there is lots more information on the Harriss families in "Morgan County Georgia Heritage 1807-1997." You may want to contact some of the people who contributed the information. The above research (only a portion of her article) was done by Barbara Carter who "would like to correspond with others in this line." Her address: Route 1, Box 57, Rusk, Texas 75785. Hi, This William HARRIS name is interesting. I carry a William HARRIS born 1774 in Craven County, NC married twice. First, to Mary Drew ALSTON and second to Sarah COFFEE, d/o Peter COFFEE and Sarah SMITH of Hancock County, GA. Another daughter of Peter and Sarah COFFEE, Elizabeth COFFEE, married Charles DANIEL of Greene County, GA and another daughter, Nancy, married Abraham HEARD and sister, Martha COFFEE married George HEARD. The HARRIS name is all over early Madison families, mostly the children of Walton HARRIS RS-VA (1739-1795) and Rebecca LANIER of Greene County, GA. Walton was the son of Nathan HARRIS and Catherine WALTON and from the looks of this bunch your William HARRIS may also be out of the same line, somewhere. The DANIEL family, I mentioned previously, was the children of Thomas DANIEL, Jr. and Sarah BURNEY and they were from up around Craven County, NC. They, also, migrated to Greene County, GA. I also know the ARNOLDS were around this bunch because Bethany ARNOLD married John CALLAWAY and they lived in Wilkes County, Ga and James FITZPATRICK, whose son, Capt. William B. FITZPATRICK, CSA (1826-1885) of Madison, married one of their grand children, Adeline Julia CALLAWAY (1833-1896). His mother was a Sarah HARRIS (1805-1850) and she had married James FITZPATRICK (1801-1844) in 1824 in Morgan County, GA. Adeline and Capt. William's son, Henry Harris FITZPATRICK (1863-1934) was a several term mayor of Madison and owned the Fitzpatrick Hardware, among other things. Henry married Ida Reneau RICHTER (1879-1968) in 1903. She was the d/o John RICHTER and Alice Elizabeth DANIEL. I cannot connect up Alice's DANIEL family of Jefferson County, GA to the DANIEL family of Greene County, GA but I think they connect, probably cousins.... John R. Ann, This brings up an interesting name. The name, William Russell DANIEL, is a name in this DANIEL family of Jefferson County, GA (and later, Morgan County, GA) but the dates do not fit with the other information I have on this family. William Russell DANIEL (1853-1904) was the older brother of Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) who married John C. RICHTER, Sr. in 1872. Alice and John RICHTER were married in 1872 by Dr. David WILLS, President of Oglethorpe University in Madison. William Russell DANIEL married Florence A. FISK (1852-1896) on 17 Feb 1879 (her 27th birthday) in Madison and the marriage was performed by Methodist minister, Rev. William B. CRAWFORD. I have a list of the children of WRD but they do not include a WRD, Jr.- see census information below. Most printed information about WRD refers to him as the "much lamented, William R. DANIEL." I do not know the reason for this tag line, either. Maybe someone else knows.... William R. DANIEL and Florence FISK had five children that I know of: i. Beatrice Russell DANIEL born 1880 married a RAMBO or RAMBEAU ii. Lena Elizabeth DANIEL born 1882 married a BISHOP, some say Frederick L. BISHOP iii. Robert Olimus DANIEL (1883-1960) married a Christie Belle EDWARDS of Palatka, FL iv. Carl James DANIEL born 1886 - we do not know much about him v. Christine Vereen or Verie DANIEL born 1888 married a RHODEN and they, too, went to FL. After Florence FISK died in 1896, WRD married Clara A. VINING (ABT 1860-ABT 1920), the widow of Drury P. EVANS (1823-1894) of Madison. I have a picture taken about 1916, probably in Madison, of some of these DANIEL children which also includes their step mother, Clara Vining DANIEL. I also have a picture of Freddy BISHOP, a child of Lena DANIEL, taken on the front steps of the Henry Harris FITZPATRICK home in Madison with one of the FITZPATRICK boys ABT 1920. William Russell DANIEL and Florence Adele FISK are buried in the DANIEL family plot in the New Section of the Madison City Cemetery, along with his mother, Mary Jane Reneau Daniel RIVERS (1830-1912) and stepfather, Professor Winfield Montgomery RIVERS (1824-1905). I do not know much about WRD's wives - Florence or Clara. I know that Florence FISK was of "Wellsville, Allegany County, NY," according to the Reneau-Richter bible, but I do not have a clue who her parents were. I think she was a school teacher at the Methodist girl's school in Madison and I think she was from rather wealthy parents because she (or they) bought this couple a nice home on 8 acres in Madison in 1880, after they were married. I have a picture of Florence taken on the porch of this home ABT 1890 and she appears to be a rather nice looking lady. He, meaning WRD, "went to seed" from the pictures I have of him and by the 1890's is a pot bellied, bearded, though still professional looking fellow. This is in striking contrast to the portraits I have of him made in the late 1860's when he was a boy. I have the identical portrait of Alice made about the same time and they were nice looking kids. In fact, our youngest daughter, Nancy, a senior at UGA, looks a lot like her great-grandmother, Alice. As for Clara VINING, she may be out of a VINING family in Madison or one that lived near Macon, Bibb County, GA. I do not have any information on her and she is not buried with WRD and Florence in Madison. She may have been a school teacher, at one time, too. I do imagine that since WRD married a Yankee they were not warmly received or probably included in RICHTER family gatherings, because all of these boys were CSA veterans and Florence was a Yankee and they lived too close to the end of the Civil War for such things to be easily forgotten. I do not know exactly when the RIVERS moved back to Madison from Glen Rose, TX but it was sometime after 1900. I also know they did not live with this DANIEL family but with John and Alice Daniel RICHTER. At least, Alice's mother, Mary Jane RENEAU, was living with Alice and John in 1912 when she died. Mary Jane was the oldest daughter of Rev. Russell RENEAU and Elizabeth STOCKTON. Rev. RENEAU (1807-1865) was a Presiding Elder in the GA and AR Conferences of the Methodist Church. Mary Jane married Robert W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865) in 1852 in Jefferson County, GA. After he died, she married Professor Winfield M. RIVERS of James Island, SC in 1867. Winfield M. RIVERS was a graduate of the University of Charleston and the older brother of Dr. William Bainbridge RIVERS of Rivers Hill Plantation, Oxford, Newton County, GA. RIVERS oldest daughter, Hallie Elise RIVERS (1850-1835) by his first wife, a Suzie COPES or CAPERS who died in 1862, married Martin L. "Mat" RICHTER, Sr. (1846-1924), John's slightly older brother. The RIVERS were a prominent family of James Island, SC. His brother, Dr. RIVERS, married Sophie R. THOMAS, d/o Rev. Edward Lloyd THOMAS, Sr. of the GA conference. Her brother was Gen. E. L. THOMAS, Jr. CSA. Both of these two RICHTER boys served in the Company A, "GA Cadets" during the CW and fought at Resaca, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Milledgeville, Savannah and Augusta in the 1864-1865 time frame. Most of this RIVERS and THOMAS family of Oxford are buried in the old Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Newton County, GA with the other early Methodist Big-Whigs. So, you can see from this, the families of John and Mat RICHTER were probably pretty close in this time frame. However, I know that Dr. Anne KILPATRICK, a grand daughter of Mat and Hallie Rivers RICHTER, was not even aware that her great-grandfather, RIVERS, was buried in Madison, so this family must have drifted apart at some time or another. I also have pictures of RIVERS and most of this family. As for who this William Russell DANIEL (1890-1964) was -- I have not a clue. However, his being in Madison and having this same name makes me think he may well be out of this DANIEL family, somewhere. I just do not know who he was, so any information on this person is appreciated. Hi John I have this on Daniel: Descendants of William Russell Daniel Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM RUSSELL DANIEL was born October 15, 1890, and died November 20, 1964. He married NELLIE MAE RUARK, daughter of GEORGE RUARK and SARAH CRAWFORD. She was born January 03, 1898 in Morgan County, Georgia, and died March 31, 1978 in Morgan County, Georgia. Is this your line? Ann ANN NICHOLSON Marietta, Georgia Researching: BOND, BOOTH, BURNS, CAREY, DILDY, EDMONDS, FOWLER, FULLER, GOBER, JORDAN, KESLER, LACKEY, MOORE, NICHOLSON, NICKELSON, PARHAM, PARR, PHILLIPS, PRATHER, SCURLOCK, STEPHENS and JAMES S. SMITH - born about 1840 immigrated from ENGLAND. "If you don't remember us daughter, who will?"
HARRIS and ARNOLD surnames. Can someone look up HARRIS in the "Morgan County Georgia Heritage 1807-1997." book? and ARNOLD? I have a William Harris married to Sarah, William died probably 1838, and the family moved to TX. William's son, Seaborn married Emily Arnold also of Morgan Co. This is my brick wall, if you have anything, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Kim Harris Baker Garland, Texas
Estelle, One small error in all that. <grin> The Elizabeth JOHNSON (1794-1848) you list as the wife of Dr. Elijah JONES (1795-1876) was not a JOHNSON but a JOHNSTON. Morgan County folks just love to shorten JOHNSTON to JOHNSON but it was JOHNSTON. Can you guess who her parents were, now? <grin> They were - Dr. Lancelot JOHNSTON I, MD (ABT 1748-1832) and Zeriah RICE of Caswell County, NC. Her brother, Lancelot JOHNSTON II, Esq. of Snow Hill in Madison married Margaret JONES (ABT 1794-AFT 1850) and what do you want to bet she is not out of the Dr. Elijah JONES family, somewhere. Elizabeth and Dr. JONES also had a daughter, Mary Jane JONES (1825-1863), who married George Asper REID who is probably connected to that REID bunch down in Putnam County that ties all over these early Madison families. According to my notes, Dr. JONES was from Amelia County, VA and the JOHNSTONS were from Fermanagh County, IRELAND. This EVANS family of Morgan County, GA really interests me. There was a Dr. EVANS of what later became Harwell's District who left Morgan County, GA and moved to Aberdeen, MS ABT 1840. I believe he was a Dr. William EVANS and he sold his land to that big Methodist, Peter Wyche WALTON. Anyway, I have a Col. Daniel Jones EVANS RS-GA (ABT 1758-1821) of Burke County, GA who married a Mary "Polly" JONES and they are all over my DANIEL bunch in and around Burke and Jefferson County, GA, who were also predominantly Methodist. The grand daughter of this Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) family of Burke County, Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924) married John Clarke RICHTER, Sr. of Madison in 1872 and her 1924 obit, written by close family friend, William Thomas BACON, says Alice descended from one of the "founding families of Morgan County, GA" and "Old WT" (1869-1944) knew his families and this one, especially, since his brother was married to a RICHTER descendant. I have to believe the Col. Daniel EVANS family of Richmond/Burke/Jefferson was probably related to the Dr. EVANS family of Morgan and they were probably also tied to this same JONES family. Also, John Byne WALKER's parents were living close to Robert C. DANIEL in Burke in 1820 which makes me think this whole bunch was probably collateral. Hephzibah, GA, then called Brothersville, could have just as easily been named, Jonesville because there were so many JONES around there, early. And some of these DANIELS went to church in Brothersville at the ME Church. The 1846 obit of Penelope DANIEL, widow of Robert of Burke, was submitted to the Southern Christian Advocate by this same Methodist church. Some say Penelope (1773-1846) was a LANE. Any thoughts...... John R. Estelle, I know all about Charles Woodruff RICHTER, III and his wife but thanks, anyway. Charles is my cousin. I wanted to about those other CREWS that were associated with Milton Chapel (1894-1934), a church that my grandmother, Alice Elizabeth DANIEL (1854-1924), wife of John C. RICHTER, Sr., built in memory of her son, Milton Abbot RICHTER (1888-1891) in 1894. Milton Chapel was located on her property in Reese Community, which was located in the southwest portion of Morgan County -- about three miles from Broughton and nine miles from Madison. The parents of Ethel Virginia CREW (1897-1953) who married Charles Woodruff RICHTER, Jr (1895-1994), known as Woody to most, were Charles Percy CREW and Lessie ALLEN. Charles W. Jr. was the grandson of Arthur Potter RICHTER (1844-1928) and Frances Cornelia FIELDING and he was the only son of Charles, Sr. and Sallie WALTON. The FIELDINGS were from CT before moving to Madison and most of this bunch is buried in the A. P. RICHTER lot in the New Section of the Madison City Cemetery. AP was my grandfather's (JCR, Sr.) older brother. "Mat" (Martin L.), "Potter" (A.P.) and John (my grandfather) are all buried within a hop-skip and a jump of each other in the Madison City Cemetery in their own, separate, lots. All of these RICHTER boys were CSA veterans and the only one who is not buried there was Charles William RICHTER, Sr (1838-1907) John R. Here is info. from another article on CREW and Richter. Page 218 "Morgan County Georgia Heritage 1807-1997:" "Charles Woodruff Richter, Jr. on 6/29/21 married Ethel Virginia Crew (b. 10/26/1897; d. 4/3/53) daughter of Charles Percy and Lessie Allen Crew of the Bethany communiuty. (Under Charles Percy Crew on page 103, it says that Charles Percy was the son of JOHN F. CREW b. 29 April 1827, d. 5 Dec. 1906. JOHN F. CREW married Martha Frances Hester Crew.) Charles Woodruff Richter, Jr. and Ethel Virginia Crew had one son, Charles "Woody" Woodruff III on 6/27/23. After the loss of his first wife, "Woody" married Veva Belding Baker on 6/11/55 who was the widow of Lemuel Wesley Baker. Charles Woodruff Richter III on 6/30/51 married Hattie Black Baker (b. 1/9/27) daughter of Lemuel Wesley and Veva Belding Baker. Their marriage ended with her death on 12/26/87. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. John, Under Georgia M. Jones, Pioneer (page 157 of "Morgan County Georgia Heritage 1807-1997") there is a REUBEN MANN (born 1785, died July 22, 1850) listed as the father of James N. Mann (born 1827). Reuben's wife was Nancy Harrison (died before 1840). Georgia M. Jones, (1832-Dec. 7, 1873) daughter of Dr. Elijah Evans Jones and Elizabeth Johnson, was born in Morgan County and married James N. Mann on June 17, 1849. James N. Mann's win of a house and land in a poker game was the cause of a dramatic change in Georgia laws concerning women's property rights. Julius P. Smith lost his wife's property in this poker game to James N. Mann in 1863 and the people were so outraged that in 1866 the Georgia Legislature put into effect a bill that allowed women to keep the property they brought into a marriage.
