I wonder if the witness to this deed was Thomas B. LAWSON and not LAWTON? The LAWSON family is near this bunch in Putnam and the name, Thomas LAWSON was confirmed in the testament to this deed. This Thomas was probably Thomas Banks LAWSON who was born 1773 in Halifax County, VA and died in 1842 in Hancock County, GA according to my information. He was the son of William LAWSON and Jane BANKS. Jane was the d/o Thomas BANKS and Mary DAVIS of Bedford County, VA. Thomas was a brother of Ralph BANKS whose family ties into the ALSTON, JONES bunch of Elbert County, GA. I also know that John B. GHENT married Martha STOKES, d/o Young STOKES (1773-1843) and Martha Lamar WALKER of the STOKES Family of Madison, Morgan County, GA, so it looks like the same bunch. Martha was the d/o Rev. Sanders WALKER and Sarah LAMAR of Wilkes County, GA. Her sister, Elizabeth WALKER (1786-1819), married the Hon. Wilson LUMPKIN of Morgan County, GA as his first wife. John R. Good Morning, A John M. DANIEL married a Sarah DURDEN on 27 Dec 1827 in Morgan County, GA. A John DANIEL died in 1867 and no heirs were listed in his estate but his will left open the possibility that some would come forward, later. Does anyone know the parent of this John M. Good Morning, This is a very interesting deed. Giles THOMPKINS was an ancestor of some of the folks who later married into my RICHTER family of Madison. This deed was for Lot 29 in District 19 and we know that the THOMPKINS family owed a lot of land in Putnam. My Richter cousin, Dr. Anne KILPATRICK of Atlanta, a descendant of Giles told me the THOMPKINS and SCOTT families donated the land to the state for what became Rock Eagle 4-H center and state park and her ancestors are buried on this property in a private cemetery. I am looking for the owner of the property comprising Land Lot 74 in the same District (19) which would be located a couple of miles north and a little bit to the west of this particular land lot (29) in Putnam County. Land lot 74 was probably drawn when the land in Baldwin County and included in the 1805 GA land lottery but it could have been bought before or later. I cannot find a listing for it in the records of this particulate land lot in that lottery. This land is basically the land lot (225 acres) adjacent to the property owned by John DURDIN of Reese Community, Durdin's District, Morgan County, GA, located in the SW portion of Morgan County, below Brownwood. There also could have been multiple owners of this particular land lot (74). If someone knows who originally owned this land lot in the 1810-1850 time frame, I would be extremely grateful because my grandmother, Alice E. DANIEL (Mrs. John C. RICHTER, SR.) ended up with it by 1895 and she did not buy it which meant she inherited it from someone. That, "someone" is the name I need. Thanks, in advance...... John R. A. Copeland, near Rutledge, occurred the death of Mr. R. W. Copeland, aged 91. The remains were interred in the family lot at the Greensboro cemetery Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, with graveside services by Rev. James McD. Radford. W. C. Hemperley was the undertaker in charge. The deceased was a native of Greene county, the son of Jasper and Mary Furlow Copeland, and was born May 25th, 1850. In early life he was married to Permelia V. Winslett, who died many years ago. There are three sons left--L. T. Copeland, Columbus, Miss., C. D. Copeland, Griffin, Ga., and W. A. Copeland, Rutledge. Additional Comments: The correct spelling of the name is Copelan. R. W. Copelan is Rowan W. Copelan. W. A. Copelan is William Alcestor Copelan (1882-1949). L. T. Copelan was known as "Thad." C. D. Hi, Thanks for this deed. Giles THOMPKINS (1773-1845) was the s/o Humphrey THOMPKINS and Susannah BRIDGES, according to the information I have. Giles THOMPKINS married Rhoda THURMAN and they lived in Putnam County, GA. Giles's son, Nicholas THOMPKINS (1796-1860) married Catherine Griffin LEVERETT and they were the parents of Mary Ellen THOMPKINS (b. ABT 1820) who married Irby Hudson SCOTT, also of Putnam County, GA. Mary Elizabeth SCOTT born ABT 1845, the d/o Irby and Mary Ellen, married Edward Edger KILPATRICK born ABT 1844 and I am very interested in this whole family because their son, Irby Thomas KILPATRICK (1872-1949) married Eva Pauline RICHTER (1875-1943) of Madison, my first cousin, once removed. A. Copeland, near Rutledge, occurred the death of Mr. R. W. Copeland, aged 91. The remains were interred in the family lot at the Greensboro cemetery Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, with graveside services by Rev. James McD. Radford. W. C. Hemperley was the undertaker in charge. The deceased was a native of Greene county, the son of Jasper and Mary Furlow Copeland, and was born May 25th, 1850. In early life he was married to Permelia V. Winslett,, who died many years ago. There are three sons left -- L. T. Copeland, Columbus, Miss., C. D. Copeland, Griffin, Ga., and W. A. Copeland, Rutledge. Additional Comments: My. great grandfather. Obituary was transcribed to include all errors, including the misspelling of the name Copelan.
