    3. John, Re: Florence, in the marriage write up in the Feb. 22 1879 Madisonian it says she is "formerly of New York". In the Feb 9 1878 issue, it says, "Miss Florence Fisk, after a few days in the country, returned to the Madison house last Saturday. Her rural visit seems to have added fresh blush to her cheeks." The Madison House is where she got married, too. Patsy Two Morgan County, Georgia Genealogy Books! http://www.geocities.com/patsyharrisgeorgia --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 1. [GAMORGAN-L] List Rules
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Dear List Members, One of the rules for this list (and all the lists which I administer) is the following: "PLEASE NOTE: Posting of items of RELIGIOUS/POLITICAL CONTENT, VIRUSES WARNINGS, CHAIN LETTERS, or SPAM will result in the sender being immediately removed from this list." While we all have (or soon will have) very strong feelings by some subscribers regarding the subject of war, this list is not to be used for the purpose of stating them. Therefore, please be advised that "anyone" who breaks this rule, will be immediately unsubscribed from the list, without the normal warning I give to all subscribers when they break list rules. That means both those who are either "anti" and "pro" on this issue. Genealogy should be one "haven" in which we can immerse ourselves, completely, in order to get away from the sometimes, bad and terrible things, happening around us. IF anyone has anything to say regarding this, address your message to ME, personally. My email address is jclarke@rose.net I thank you all for your cooperation John R. Clarke List Administrator

    3. Patsy, Thanks for that information. What I am really trying to find out is who Florence A. FISK (1852-1895) was. I have her obit but it makes no mention of her parents. I also know she married William Russell DANIEL on 17 Feb 1879 in Madison. Marriage conducted by Rev. W. B. CRAWFORD, who I assume was William Bibb CRAWFORD, son of William H. CRAWFORD. I think she was a teacher at that "Yankee Lady's" girl's school in Madison. I know a Mrs. DANIEL is later listed as a teacher at one of the schools attended by the MUSTIN kids, so I assume she was a teacher. Otherwise, there is no relationship that I can see between where she was from, Wellsville, Allegany County, NY and Madison and I do know she was from Wellsville. She is buried with WRD and his mother, Mary Jane RENEAU, and his step father, Professor Winfield Montgomery (W. M.) RIVERS, formerly of James Island, SC, in the New Section of the Madison City Cemetery in the Daniel lot. Any information is appreciated. John R. Wyatt of Augusta who married Fanny P. Allen of Madison in July of 1843. Her father was the Executor of the estate of a Thomas H. Wyatt in January of 1848 "to sell the negroes and real estate" in Morgan County. In November of 1856 a lot of land was being sold in Morgan County "on the waters of Little River, joining the lands of Dr. W.H. Newton, M.P. West, Thomas Wyatt and others." In my ssecond book there is a description of the land known as the "Thomas Wyatt home place" being sold in 1877. Patsy

    1. [GAMORGAN-L] Some Burial Information from the Madison City Cemtery
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Good Evening, While I was in Madison last week I copied some burial information for some of the families that were close to my "Richter bunch" so I would have them. I thought I would share this information with you. All of this information is from the Madison City Cemetery, Madison, Morgan County, GA. I have also noted that several of the published dates and/or for some of these people are in error and I have corrected my information. I would like also to communicate with any of the families listed here because I feel or know they are in related to my bunch from Madison in various ways. I will not say I have not made a mistake in my transcription of this information and if you note an error, feel free to let me know. 1. [GAMORGAN-L] Happy New Year
    2. John R. Clarke
    3. Happy New Year, 2002 was a very good year for the MORGAN-GA list. We had over 400 total messages sent to the list during the year from an average of about 125 subscribers. These totals do not equal the activity on my DANIEL List which had almost 2000 messages and 300 subscribers but it was much more than in previous years. The one problem we all face is all of the inaccurate information that is out there, especially on the Internet. I am sure that, at least, 50% of all of the published genealogy of any family is flat wrong. - the farther back in time you go, the worse it is However, there is not a lot of Morgan County, GA family information out there for me to compare. In fact, I am really surprised how little genealogical information is out there as relates to Morgan County, GA families. Hopefully, this year will change that. As genealogists, we must never forget that genealogy is like a road map with lots of roads to travel. Once you head down the wrong road, due to inaccurate travel information, you may well end up in San Francisco instead of Dallas. In genealogy, that means you are lost and without a clue. <grin> In my years of research, I have looked through thousands of published GEDCOMS and I have learned two basic rules about them. The first is - the more people they contain, the more inaccurate they usually are. The second is - the more famous people they contain, especially royalty - the more inaccurate they usually are. <grin> However, even the worst information has some truth to it but separating fact from fiction may sometime be a difficult chore. One rule I always try to follow is -- "any assignment has to make sense." In other words, did this guy or gal live in close proximity to each other and were their families collateral in that location or some earlier time. You will find, over time, that sisters often married brothers, cousins often married cousins and all tended to marry within am extended family group that often migrated and lived within a just few houses of each other. This would change as the 19th Century came to a close but it was more or less the rule before the CW. I think everybody in our generation has heard of the "girl next door," well our ancestors also heard of them and more often than not -- married them. Another rule is -- given names run in families like fish in a stream. My old rule is that John's and Sarah's always have little Johnny's and Sally's running around the house. I usually look for the use of typical naming patterns where the first male child is named after the father's father and the first daughter is named for the mother's mother, etc., but I find these patterns will diminish in use after the Revolution. Then, I find the given and surnames of family friends, neighbors, etc. or the given and surnames of religious or political figures to be a greater basis for given and middle names than typical family naming patterns. This is not to mean the old family naming patterns dropped by the wayside, they did not. However, they diminished in use and contrary to what some may believe the naming of a child is more determined by what is in "vogue," much as it is today. Another point to always remember when posting a query about any family member is -- give their approximate dates of birth, where they lived (be as specific as you can), who they married (if known), their collateral families (if known) and basically what you know about their family. Contrary to what some may think -- "we did not know Uncle Bill or Aunt Peggy." Also, on the list, if you see a message on the list which interests you -- reply to it (to the list). However, if you are just thanking someone for helping you, kudos. etc -- please do so, "privately," to that individual, and not to the whole list. You can do this by copying the email address of the sender into the "To:" box of the message, overwriting the MORGAN email address in the process. Another thing I really hate to see is "one line queries." There is no way you can present your family in one line, even if you do not know who they are. <grin> So, when I call for a roll call on the list (about every three months) or you are writing an introduction to a new list you just subscribed to -- give us your best and tell us as much as you can about your family, including the warts and the blemishes because they matter, too. And, most of us read all posts to the list and it may be the one item that you almost overlooked that will help one of us find your family. Most of all -- I hope your New Year will be as good as I know ours will be. John R. Clarke For some of the best in the outdoors visit www.outdoorwriter.com This message is also virus free

    3. Hi, I have two COLEMAN lines that tie into my family of Morgan County, GA. One is the Eden COLEMAN line out of Greene County, GA, but I do not show Matthew as a given name in this bunch but there could be one of which I am not aware. They tie into the DANIEL, RANDLE, RALLS and PALMER families of Greene County,.GA. The other family is from a Charles COLEMAN and Amelia GARNER family whose children settled in Emanuel County, GA. Matthew is a given name in this family and they seem to tie into many of the same general families as my DANIEL bunch did in Burke and Jefferson County -- located just north of Emanuel. In fact one of my GGF's wives was from Emanuel County -- a Rachel Rebecca GREEN born 1824 in Emanuel County, GA There seems to be quite a bit of family connections between Morgan and Burke, Jefferson, Richmond and Emanuel Counties in this era. I have not been able to tie my DANIEL family from Burke and Jefferson back to the DANIEL families of Greene and Morgan but I would almost bet money there was a connection -- probably back in Southside, VA or in NC. We know the John Byne WALKER who married Eliza Saffold FANNING was from Burke and in fact his parents lived just a few houses from my 2nd GGF, Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) but I have not been able to draw any other connections between Burke and Morgan. The reason is that all of Burke's records before the CW are lost and gone, forever. . Also, the WHCYES, BRYANS JORDANS and MITCHELLS of around Richmond County (Augusta), as well as the STOKES and WINGFIELDS of Morgan, were all collateral and many of them tie into families with both Morgan, Emanuel, Twiggs and Thomas County, GA. The problem is there are so many incorrect assignments in many of these families that trying to get a good picture of them, based upon the information that is available, is almost impossible because so much of the information is not only wrong, but conflicting. My bet is these COLEMANS in both Morgan and Emanuel County, as well as COLEMANS back in VA, especially those from Southside, are probably connected in some way. John R. 1. [GAMORGAN-L] 54th GA VIR

    3. I found something interesting this morning. Dr. James Erwin GODFREY, Jr. MD, for whom the town of Godfrey, GA is named was a Captain in the 54th GA during the CW -- their Surgeon (1862-1865). Also, his father, Rev. James Erwin GODFREY, Sr. was the Chaplain of the 54th GA (May-Nov 1862). There are other names on the roster of the 54th GA that I clearly recognize as being from families in and around Morgan County, GA. These include that of Lt. Col Morgan RAWLS, who I will bet is in some way related to the RAWLS family of Greene County, Assistant Surgeon W. B. RICHARDSON who is probably related in some way to the RICHARDSON family from up around Rutledge. Others noted names were COLEMAN, TALLEY, MANSFIELD, EVANS, KNIGHT, etc. A name that really caught my eye was Capt. John G. CLARKE, who I am pretty sure was the same school teacher from Madison, GA who at one time taught my Grand Uncle, Charles W. RICHTER, Jr, who was then in the 3rd GA. If your ancestor was in the 54th, you might want to drop by this website and take a look at the history of this CSA Regiment -- http://www.csawardept.com/genealogy/regiments/GA/54thInf/ John R.
