    1. [GAMONROE] Hilarious Marriage Notice
    2. Ruth Padilla
    3. This marriage notice has nothing to do with any of my listservs, but it was so funny that I thought all of you would get a huge laugh out of a REAL marriage notice I found on microfilm. See below. Happy New Year! Ruth The Toccoa Georgia News - August 10, 1889 Charlie White and Mary Barnes of Central, S. C. arrived in the city last Thursday on the morning train, hired a horse and buggy, went to Clarksville, obtained a license, returned here, went before Squire Mulkey and got the matrimonial knot tied in time to return to Central by the night train. The newly married couple seemed as happy as a dead pig in the sunshine, but was sorter short on scads. They lacked 20 cents of having enough money to pay the Squire. Their baggage consisted of a quart of licker and tickets to Central. But they didn't want anything said about it in the paper, and of course their wishes will be respected. ++++++++++++ Folks, I was at the library today looking over the microfilm I had ordered through interloan library. The microfilm was on two reels from the University of Georgia and consisted of all the microfilm records they had on the Toccoa Georgia News in Habersham County, Georgia. This marriage record was just too funny to pass up even though it was not my ancestors. I promise you, I did NOT change a single word or punctuation! This newspaper came out on Saturdays so the Thursday in question would be August 8. 1889. It's pretty difficult to improve when one is already near perfect. 3. In response to the message from Ruth Padilla, there is a gentleman in Thomaston who is in the business of restoring cemeteries and has recently restored the Thweatt-Searcy cemetery in Monroe County near Bolingbroke. I don't know if he is as skilled as the fellow in the article that Ruth referred to, or what his rates are, but here is his address and telephone number if anyone ever needs his services: Keith Culverhouse 308 Magnolia Ave Thomaston , GA 30286-4707 (706)646-2319 Tony Pryse ***************************************************** * Kenneth M. If more counties hired someone like the person in this story we would be able to find more of our ancestors. This would make a GREAT feature on 60 Minutes, 20/20 or Dateline! 2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. [NOTE:Please realize that this is a reply to a GenConnect Board posting, but I thought it might be of general interest to the list.] If you haven't been able to locate Salem Church yet, please send me an email and I will send directions. My great, great grandparents, Gideon Mason Davis & Elizabeth Davis, my great grandparents, William Booker Davis & Carrie Evans Davis, my grandparents, Woodfin Grady Davis & Corine Grant Davis, are buried there. Five of my grandparents' (Woodfin & Corine)children are also buried there--Mason Arthur Davis, Vernon Lanier Davis, William Morgan Davis (infant), Mayde Evelyn Davis(tombstone has "Maude" which is incorrect)--died at age of 4 yrs., and Sarah Elizabeth Davis--also died at age of 4 yrs.. There is a homecoming at Salem each year on the first Sunday in May. Most of those in attendance are descendants of the former members of Salem, many of whom are buried there. If you are interested, I have several old newspaper articles about Salem which I will gladly share with you. I look forward to hearing from you. Betty Yarbrough <bdyarbrough@aol.com>

    1. [GAMONROE] Seeking info. on William H. ZELLNER
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. I have just about exhasted all avenues on my reasearh of William H. Zellner. He is the son of Arnold Zellner, II. I have a birth certificate on one of his children (Homer Wade Zellner) that list his middle name as Harrison. The name on file in the Mormon Church has his middle name as Hackett. The story has it he got his wife's sister pregnant, he had to leave because her brothers were out to get him. He married Bertha Barbara Parrish, and had five children, Homer Wade, Buckner Theodore, Lettie, Barney & Terry. Lettie, Barney and Terry all died in a flu epidemic in 1918. Buckner Theodore is my father (1899-1958). I would appreciate any information on him. I'm beginnig to think he may have changed his name. Thank You! Frank Arnold Zellner

NOT! : Hello listmembers! : : Just wanted to sent a message out to everyone on my various Rootsweb : genealogy lists and tell you that you can relax about viruses being : transmitted on these lists. Some listowners who don't understand exactly : how Rootsweb works have panicked when they have gotten an e-mail with : what appears to be (though none of them have opened it) a virus : attachment. It is called "pirate.exe", and I'm sure before the ol' clock : ticks over on 1 Jan 2000, we will hear of many more. : : Please don't panic about this. I've heard that there are some listowners : who have had lots of "unsub" messages lately... Rootsweb does not allow : attachments to go through its lists, and so they are automatically : bounced to the listowner (and usually with an attachment on the subject : that says {not a subscriber}). All we have to do at that point is delete : them. I generally take a look at them, just in case it is someone on the : list trying to send a GEDCOM or a picture file, so that I can let them : know that this is not possible. Generally, the message is also sent back : to the individual who sent it letting them know that they cannot send : attachments. : : So, don't worry about getting a virus from your Rootsweb lists. Just be : extra vigilant over the next few weeks (and always, really) to NOT open : any attachments (particularly ".exe" and ".zip" ones) that you were not : expecting. You almost can't go by the maxim to "not open it unless you : know the person", since they are getting sophisticated enough now that : worms are being sent back out from infected computers to people in their : address books. So it may have a "here's the stuff you wanted" kind of : subject and may be from someone you know. As long as you don't open the : attachment, it can't hurt you, and you can always just let it sit and : pop an e-mail off to the sender asking if they really DID send you : something! I've even gotten to the point where I don't open cutesy : little "Christmas messages" or "Year 2000" animated gifs because I don't : have the time and don't want to risk anything. Silly I suppose, but I : have yet to be infected with a virus or worm either! :-) (Now... where's : the wood again to knock on?) : : Hope this has been helpful (though long-winded) and that you all have a : wonderful Christmas and a virus-free 2000! : : Mary Kathryn : Rootsweb Listowner : -- : Mary Kathryn Kozy : mkozy@attglobal.net : My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ : South King Co. 1. [GAMONROE] Burgay and Ponder
    2. Richard Sharp
    3. I am a decendant of Jefferson Burgay bn 1829 Monroe co Ga. In 1850 he married Martha Ponder bn in Monroe also. They had one son John Merril Burgay. They separated for some reason, I have heard several stories. In 1858 Martha moved to Natchitoches Parish La. Here her brother was an overseer. She married Americus V. Carter there in 1858, I suspect that he was from Monroe co. also but dont know for sure. Jefferson Burgay is found in Jacksonville Fla. in the 1860 census working as a carpenter and living with his mothers relatives the Green family. Then on Oct 16 1866 he was found marrying a Mary Felicia Pulley in Halifax NC. This is the last I have located him. Jeffersons parents were John and Phoebe Burgay, born and raised in Jones county Ga. I was wondering if Martha is one of the children listed in the Ponder Bible there on the Monroe county page. If anyone knows any of these names or can help me I would appreciate it much. Thanks Richard Sharp

    3. Hi! Genners!!! It's great to see so many names being posted...keep it up!!! Do any of you have any "gen" wishes for Christmas? I want some crumbled "brick walls", truthful dates for many, and parent -child links matched. I also want my local library to update its resources (ridiculously low for such an historical area as this) and extend its open hours...earlier and later. Also, they don't have interlibrary Loan!!! It would also be nice if my son could have a vehicle to get me there. Also, I need a new desk to accommodate my left-hand for writing as well as my right-hand mouse, plus an additional unpublished phone line for personal calls from my dad, etc. Jennifer Sherwood Braswell jensgen@iol10.com
