Braswell - ------------------------------------------------- EMAZING - http://www.emazing.com Proudly Presents The Genealogy Tip of the Day Monday April 17, 2000 - ------------------------------------------------------- Advance Library Preparation Before traveling to a library or archive in a distant town to look for books, periodicals and other materials, check to see if their catalog is accessible through the Internet. Their Online Public Access catalog (OPAC) may be integrated into their Web site. A great place to start is with LibrarySpot (tm) and its Libraries Online Web site at http://www.libraryspot.com/librariesonline.htm. Once you access a library's OPAC, search by title for the surnames and/or regions you are researching. Next, search by subject. And finally, search by author's surname, using the surnames you are researching. One of your cousins may have written a book about the family and used a creative title that does not use the surname itself. Make note of the author, title, and classification number. When you arrive at the library, you will be able to go right to the shelves or ask the reference librarian for help in locating precisely what you want. Be sure to list the info you have, and the info you would like to have. I am working on a list of helpful web sites for this cause that will be listed as I check them out. You, too, are welcome to share websites. Don't worry about duplications...we never know when someone new will sign-on. Jennifer Sherwood Braswell jensgen@iol10.com

    1. [GAMONROE] Civil War Muster Rolls 5.5 million listed FREE SEARCH
    2. Ginny Walker English
    3. Last night while digging around ancestry.com's website (looking for free database searches) I found the Civil Water Muster database which is a free search. There are 5.5 million listed. I'm not sure of the exact link, but you can find it by going to http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/alldblist.asp and scrolling down through the list. I found what I was looking for and was surprised. To get around the search, first I typed in English and there were 15000 or more, then I typed in English Georgia and it just found the English men in Georgia . . . Hope it helps. 3. HI folks!!! During the last few days, I have realized that I have neglected to remind us all to include surrounding counties in your searches... Our ancestors often had property in more than one county in the area for one of many reasons, including the formation of new counties, boundary adjustments, etc. Check out the history of your counties, and the dates of your primary events to see where you might find records, etc. Jennifer Sherwood Braswell jensgen@iol10.com
