    1. [GAMONROE] Anderson Lamar Colvard
    2. I have been told that Anderson Lamar Colvard was a prominent african-american in the 20th century who was born in Monroe County, Ga. He was born 1844 and I believe died in 1927. He was the first to county votes in some county in Ga and was one of the first "colored" to be able to buy their marriage licenses. He is a distant ancestor of mine and I am interested in his family history. His wife's name was Tabitha Shannon. The had 13 children. He was a deacon. Any information you can supply would be greatly appreciated. M. Marie

    1. Re: [GAMONROE] Early Monroe County.
    2. Tony Pryse
    3. From the Monroe County web site: "The Creek Indians had been living on the land that now comprises Monroe County, Georgia, from long before the colonial expansion in 1540 until 1821 and the Treaty of Indian Springs. On January 8, 1821, the Treaty of Indian Springs was signed by the head chiefs, including General McIntosh, of the Creek Nation, ceding the land between the Ocmulgee and the Flint Rivers to the U.S. Government. Five counties were created from the ceded lands, Dooly, Fayette, Henry, Houston, and Monroe. The original Monroe County included all of what would become Pike County and Upson County and parts of Bibb, Butts, and Spalding Counties. " From the Pike County web site: "Pike County was formed in 1822 from the Western portion of Monroe County." From the Lamar County web site: "Lamar County, Georgia was created in 1920 from the western portion of Monroe County and the eastern portion of Pike County. The county seat is Barnesville. The town of Barnesville, named in honor of Gideon Barnes who settled in the southeastern portion of Pike County in 1826, was the largest town in Pike County. There had been the desire among the residents for a number of years to form a new county because of the distances to Zebulon, the county seat of Pike County, and to Forsyth, the county seat of Monroe County." From the above information, the area that is now Barnesville was in Monroe County for only one year, from Monroe County's formation in 1821 until Pike was created from Monroe County in 1822. The town of Barnesville was not in existence until at least 1826. It was then in Pike County until 1920, when Lamar was created. Hope this helps.
