    1. [GAMONROE] The Master Index is up!
    2. James P. Lynch, III
    3. Thanks; this is a great resource. I immediately found one of my long lost HARVEYs, unfortunately he was killed at the Battle of Olustee in Florda, but its nice to know. v/s Jim Lynch Mary Kozy wrote: > > OK, I have now put the Master Index created by Tony Pryse for the Monroe > County Confederate Soldiers up on the site. > Mary Kathryn -- James P. 1. [GAMONROE] The Master Index is up!
    2. Mary Kozy
    3. OK, I have now put the Master Index created by Tony Pryse for the Monroe County Confederate Soldiers up on the site. To get there, go to "Online Records" from http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe/ and then scroll down to Military Records (Civil War). You can look at each individual unit, or you can click on the master index and go from the soldier's name to the unit, where you will have to click on the letter for the index at the top of the unit to find them. If they served as an officer, they will be listed (by rank) at the top of the unit page. I know that this will be helpful to those of you who know you had ancestors that may have served in the Civil War (or the War of Northern Agression as it is more commonly called in the South), but you aren't sure which unit they were in. This should help, as you can then write for service and pension records based on the knowledge of what unit they served in. Be sure to thank Tony for his help in getting this to the web site. And a big thanks to Lillian Henderson who originally compiled this incredible information! :-) Mary Kathryn

    1. [GAMONROE] Postings to GenConnect Boards
    2. Mary Kozy
    3. Howdy again everyone (twice in 2 days; this must be a record or something!) :-), I was just in visiting our GenConnect boards today and "cleaning them up" a bit. I noticed that there have been several postings to lists that do not apply to the topic of that list. Rather than just deleting them, I checked the Query board (which is where most of the stray postings belonged) and reposted them there before deleting them from the inappropriate board. For the most part, the postings applied, but I thought I'd review what each board is specifically for in hopes that I won't have to do this again for a while. I hope that this will clarify the purpose of these boards. I know when you are looking for information about your families that you want to post that question in as many places as possible; however, I would ask you to post them to the appropriate board so as not to clutter up the other boards with extraneous information. Thanks! :-) Mary Kozy ************************************* QUERY Board: This is where you post general questions, observations, etc. related to your families. The "I would like to find more...", "Does anyone know...?", "I have this and would like to share....", etc. kinds of questions. Almost ALL QUESTIONS go here. BIOS Board: This is specifically for biographies written about your ancestor. They may have been published in an old family history, a county history, a newspaper, or you may have written them yourself. It's a forum more for sharing information that you have than asking for information about an ancestor. OBITS Board: This is fairly self-explanatory. This is strictly for posting obituaries of your ancestors from Monroe County. Please don't ask for obits or general information on this board. Also, if you'd like to post your obit on our Obituary page on the site itself, I'd be happy to duplicate it there. For those of you who have posted your obits to this page, please let me know if you'd like me to post it there as well. I won't do this without your permission. BIBLE RECORDS: This again, is pretty obvious. It is for posting family Bible records that you may have that pertain to your ancestors from Monroe County. If you are looking for a family Bible, please post that on the Query board. DEEDS: For posting deeds from land sales in Monroe County, Georgia. PENSIONS: For posting pensions for military service in any war that pertain to Monroe County families. WILLS: This is for posting the wills/probate information of individuals that lived in Monroe County.

    1. [GAMONROE] New things on the web site
    2. Mary Kozy
    3. Hey all! Check out the revamped "Online Records" page at the Monroe County, Georgia web site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamonroe/. >From there, you can click on the link to all the rosters of Confederate soldiers that served from Monroe Co., thanks to Tony Pryse's contribution of the Monroe County units from Lillian Henderson's "Rosters of Confederate Soldiers". The only thing left to be put up is the Master Index to all of the soldiers listed from the various regiments from Monroe County. Look for that soon! Also, check out the new Obituary Index, which includes the previously submitted obits by Cliff Spier, as well as almost 50 more from Ruth Padilla. I even included a few from my own research. Thanks to both Cliff and Ruth for their contributions! Hope you enjoy the new resources on the site, and if you have anything you'd like to contribute, please let me know! :-) Mary Kathryn Kozy Monroe County, Georgia GenWeb webmaster

    1. [GAMONROE] Wheelers in GA and TN
    2. David Wheeler
    3. Still looking for the following Wheeler family. Robert M. Wheeler first shows up in Monroe Co. GA in 1824 in the Marriage records there. Robert and family show up in the census records as follows, 1830 Monroe Co GA, 1840 Pike Co. GA. In 1850 only Henrietta shows up in the Monroe Co. census listed as follows, "HH 318, Haney Wheeler, female, age 35/45?, b. GA, Emily(?) Wheeler, female, age 23, b. GA, James H. Wheeler, male, age 4, b. GA". Robert is with his family in 1860 in Monroe Co. GA. Robert shows up with his daughter Sarah Jane Curtis in the 1870 Humphreys Co TN. census and is with son Garland in the 1880 Humphreys Co TN. census. Robert M. Wheeler died 1884 and is buried at the Curtis Chapel Cem. In Humphreys Co TN. All of Robert's children except Enoch (James) H. Wheeler settle in the White Oak Creek area of Humphreys Co between 1865-1875. In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census Robert is listed as born in GA. Robert's children, grandchildren, and g-grandchildren married into the Collier, Curtis, Hatcher, Hooper, and Smith families among others in Humphreys Co TN. Robert's wife Henrieta (Haney) had her will probated in 1868 and list her children as Garland F. Wheeler, John W. Wheeler, William D. Wheeler, Adrecia A. Curtis, Enoch H. Wheeler, and Sarah A. Curtis. Witnesses on the will are Thomas L. Marshall, W. H. Bankston, W. W. Cain, G. W. Hanson, and O. Morse as Ordinary. Believe (but can not prove) that Robert's father is William A. Wheeler b. abt 1768 in VA. This William A. Wheeler is on the 1830 Monroe Co GA census relatively close to Robert M.. William A. is on the 1850 Monroe Co. GA census very close to "Haney Wheeler" (Robert's wife). This William A. Wheeler has the following listed in his household; William age 82 b. VA, Susan Wheeler age 69 b. VA, William Varner (female) age 16. A William A. Wheeler of the right age is also on the 1820 Wilkes Co. GA census but cannot confirm this is the same William A. Wheeler. In 1820 William A. Wheeler of Wilkes Co. Ga receives a land from the lottery in Walton Co GA (two counties north of Monroe Co GA). In 1832 both William A. Wheeler and Robert M. Wheeler of the same district of Monroe Co GA receive land in gold districts of Paulding Co. from the land lottery. Any help on the above family would be greatly appreciated. Be sure to keep your virus checkers up-to-date, but THAT IS NOT ENOUGH; you MUST be careful with attachments. If someone (known or unknown) sends you an attachment then:- - you can scan the attachment, but again THAT IS NOT ENOUGH. - do NOT open the attachment. 3. Does anyone in and around Monroe County, preferrably Griffin, Georgia know of a woman named Inez BECK? I have some notes written in the mid 1970's of my dad's saying that Inez BECK has a photograph of my grandmother, Annie Nolan WATKINS and great grandmother, Louise Hammond REMSHART WATKINS. This photo would have been taken about 1902-1903. Even if Inez BECK is already deceased, perhaps I could find her descnedants and they might possibly have this photo. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Ruth Padilla

    2. Hello list, I am a new subscriber. My middle Georgia ancestors and interests are; DENT, WORSHAM, HOY, JORDAN. I have found some information indicating that a lot of my Worsham ancestors are buried in Culloden. I have been through Culloden once but did not have enough time to find the cemeteries. My only HOY ancestor currently is Elizabeth Hoy who married John Washington Dent in 1840. She was born in 1819. I have seen James Hoy listed in Monroe during this time frame and would like to determine if there is a connection. Almira Jordan married John Robert Worsham in this same time frame. I would like to see if there are any Jordan connections that can be made as well. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from the list. Robert Missroon Savannah, GA Rsroon@aol.com
