Hi, My ancestor, JOHN POWELL PORTER, lived in Meriwether Co., I believe in White Sulpher Springs, not far from the line with Troup. I'm sorry to include so much, but I have learned that sometimes connections are made through details that I would have thought were unimportant! John Powell Porter: --- Born January 16, 1828, Gwinnett Co., GA (at least his father was on the 1830 census there) --- Appears on 1870 GA Census in White Sulpher Springs, Meriwether Co. --- Died November 27, 1900 in Meriwether??? --- Married MARTHA TRAYLOR (1832-1862) dau. Wiley Traylor of Troup Co., in Troup Co. --- Enlisted in CSA infantry in White Sulpher Springs in 1861. Captured in 1862 and spent rest of war in Union Prison Camp in Ill. --- Martha Traylor Porter died July 15, 1862. Buried in Flowers Cemetery, Troup. John Porter is not buried there. Their children, whom someone had to care for after Martha died and he was still in prison camp: 1. Martha J. "Mattie" Porter--b. probably c. 1855 m. Thomas J. DUKE i. Augustus Duke b. 1874 ii. Mattie O. Duke b. 1876 iii. Richard E. Duke b. 1879 Martha Duke was in Carroll Co. in 1920's as have letter she wrote from there then. 2. Mary "Mollie" Porter (no dates) m. _______ TOLAND Child I know about; i. Lillian Toland 3. Sarah Jane "Sallie" Porter--my great-grandmother b. August 15, 1858, Meriwether Co.(family lore) d. March 04, 1948, Fayette Co., GA m. WALTER BRANNON CARNES of Jonesboro, Clayton Co., GA, on December 05, 1878 QUESTIONS, besides the obvious blanks that need filling in above info: --Does anyone know of the second marriage of John Powell Porter? Old timers I've interviewed say there was a J. P. Porter who was a half-brother to Sarah Carnes, who visited her in Fayette Co., GA, but they can provide no other information. This J. P. Porter would have been the son of John Powell Porter and his second wife. --Anyone know anything about a J. P. PORTER, born after 1865? --Anyone know of a John Powell Porter (and second wife) buried in Meriwether? I GUESS they would have been Methodists. Thanks for wading through all of this. If you think you can help, I would really appreciate your contacting me. Any lead or suggestion would be great.
