    1. JOHN POWELL PORTER (1828-1900)
    2. Hi, I'm so excited that this list now exists! I'm searching for information about my great-great grandparents: JOHN POWELL PORTER b. Jan, 16, 1828, perhaps in Gwinnett Co., GA m. MARTHA TRAYLOR (1832-1862) of Troup Co.,1853, in Troup Cp., GA d . November 27, 1900, I believe in Meriwether Co., GA They had three daughters: 1. MARTHA "Mattie" PORTER b. abt 1855 m. THOMAS J. DUKE 2. MARY "Mollie" PORTER m. ______TOLAND 3. SARAH "Sallie" PORTER b. August 15, 1858, believe Greenville, Meriwether Co., GA m. Dec. 05, 1878 to WALTER BRANNON CARNES of Jonesboro, Clayton, Co., GA d. March 04, 1948, Fayette Co., GA **And possibly a son named J. P. PORTER. (This info from an elderly relative who remembers a J. P. Porter coming to visit his sister SARAH PORTER CARNES.) JOHN POWELL PORTER enlisted in the Confederate Army at Sulphur Springs in Meriwether Co., in 1861 He appears in the 1860 GA Census in Mt. Sulphur, Meriwether Co. and in the 1870 GA Census in White Sulphur Springs, Meriwether Co. I'm guessing that when John Powell Porter lived in Troup, it was close to the line with Meriwether, as he went there to enlist, and later shows up on censuses for the same area. **Can anyone tell me whether (White?) Sulphur Springs is near Greenville? **Does aynone have information on where he might be buried? His wife, Martha Traylor Porter, who died in 1862, is buried with her family in Troup. He lived another 38 years! **Could he have remarried. . .and been buried beside wife #2? **Anyone know of this (possible) son, J. P. Porter, I assume, a Jr.? The info above is ALL I have on these relatives, so I would appreciate any leads, advice, or information.
