Hi, My ancestor, JOHN POWELL PORTER, lived in Meriwether Co., I believe in White Sulpher Springs, not far from the line with Troup. I'm sorry to include so much, but I have learned that sometimes connections are made through details that I would have thought were unimportant! John Powell Porter: --- Born January 16, 1828, Gwinnett Co., GA (at least his father was on the 1830 census there) --- Appears on 1870 GA Census in White Sulpher Springs, Meriwether Co. --- Died November 27, 1900 in Meriwether??? --- Married MARTHA TRAYLOR (1832-1862) dau. Wiley Traylor of Troup Co., in Troup Co. --- Enlisted in CSA infantry in White Sulpher Springs in 1861. Captured in 1862 and spent rest of war in Union Prison Camp in Ill. --- Martha Traylor Porter died July 15, 1862. Buried in Flowers Cemetery, Troup. John Porter is not buried there. Their children, whom someone had to care for after Martha died and he was still in prison camp: 1. Martha J. "Mattie" Porter--b. probably c. 1855 m. Thomas J. DUKE i. Augustus Duke b. 1874 ii. Mattie O. Duke b. 1876 iii. Richard E. Duke b. 1879 Martha Duke was in Carroll Co. in 1920's as have letter she wrote from there then. 2. Mary "Mollie" Porter (no dates) m. _______ TOLAND Child I know about; i. Lillian Toland 3. Sarah Jane "Sallie" Porter--my great-grandmother b. August 15, 1858, Meriwether Co.(family lore) d. March 04, 1948, Fayette Co., GA m. WALTER BRANNON CARNES of Jonesboro, Clayton Co., GA, on December 05, 1878 QUESTIONS, besides the obvious blanks that need filling in above info: --Does anyone know of the second marriage of John Powell Porter? Old timers I've interviewed say there was a J. P. Porter who was a half-brother to Sarah Carnes, who visited her in Fayette Co., GA, but they can provide no other information. This J. P. Porter would have been the son of John Powell Porter and his second wife. --Anyone know anything about a J. P. PORTER, born after 1865? --Anyone know of a John Powell Porter (and second wife) buried in Meriwether? I GUESS they would have been Methodists. Thanks for wading through all of this. If you think you can help, I would really appreciate your contacting me. Any lead or suggestion would be great. Would like to share info on the family of James Baker and the family of John & Cynthia McDaniel. They came to Meriwether before the 1830 census and probably left after 1860. Thanks Mary
Hi Mary, Did John maybe have a brother by the name of Levi? Have been searching for years for him. supposedly, he was born in GA. in 1801, and died in Haywood cty, NC sometime after 1860. Hi Suzanne, We have about 15 subscribers at this time, between the list and digest..I would think that it is a good time to resend your message. After I sent this today, my mother called from NC, to tell me, my grandmother has gotten worse. Grandma has cancer and the news today was she is not expected to live more than a few days to a week or so. We had hoped she would make it to her 89th birthday on the 29th but it looks as if she won't. I will be going to NC this weekend instead of visiting Meriwether. Most likely I won't be back for whatever time grandma has left. I will still get my email, so don't worry that I didn't get your requests. It will just take me longer to get to Meriwether co. and look them up. I can't remember, but it seems as if the names are listed as first initials then the last name. Send it as many ways as you think it might be listed. Will give me more chances of finding it. Dear Debbie, Thanks for the offer. On a long shot, could you look for the land of John Powell Porter, Jr.? I think this would be his name--or J. P. Porter. His father, is listed on 1870 Census as John Powell Porter in White Sulphur Springs, in southwest Meriwether. Thanks! I bet you're going to HAVE to take the map out of its frame to copy it at a Kinko's or the equivalent. Have never hear of a way to copy something behind glass. I posted to the list at its inception and you suggested I re-post later when there were more subscribers. Time now? Might be a good idea to announce the list's existence again to the GA list, now that there are probably a lot of new Christmas-gift-computer owners. Just a thought. Hi everyone, We still don't have a lot of subscribers, and because we don't, I think I can make this offer<G> My uncle, was Benjamin Fowler, from Meriwether Co. On the wall of his den, he has a map of the county, done in 1910, by the Hudgins Company. [I have tried to find the Hudgins co, but apparently they are out of business. ] On the map, along with all the usual roads, streams, railroads and towns, there is listed all the LANDOWNERS names where their property is located in the county. So if you have any ancestors from Meriwether co, that still lived there in 1910, let me know. I will be more than glad to look for them on the map. Only the year, 1910. I understand that only one other of these maps is in existence, in the courthouse. At least Uncle Ben, when he was alive, thought so. I plan to go visit soon, but you have plenty of time to get the information to me. Maybe in a week or so, if not this weekend. If you get this after this weekend, don't worry..I'll be going back. I hope to move to Meriwether as soon as I sell my home here. [Do you know anyone who wants to move to Stockbridge? Have a great deal on a all brick home!] By checking this map, I found that the home I want to purchase was owned by W.A.Davis in 1910.... Hi Debbie, Would you look for any Jeters? I found an article in a book indicating the Francis Jeter home was demolished fairly recently and it was so well built it was hard to bring down. Seems like a bad thing to destroy a house that old and that wellbuilt. He is supposed to be buried somewhere in back of the house. It was called a plantation house but it didn't look very big in the picture. I've taken photos of pictures in glass and they came out rather well. You can't use a flash. I took the pictures outside. I've also xeroxed pictures and papers in frames and they worked out well, too. Thanks, but no thanks, for your house. I don't know where Stockbridge is. I'm in Jacksonville and just bought an 1890 farm house further south. Dear Debbie, Yes, I'm looking for several Merriwether Co relatives. George Washington Hall, & son, George Frank Hall-had mill near present day Callaway Gardens. It may have been Shipley or Chipley then. Williams family-father, James Newton d 1901, may have had sons still there? James David O'Neal minister of Enon Primitive Baptist Chruch Thrash family-Maltire Anthony Thrash d 1898, maybe children still owned some land? Any help on ancestors of these families appreciated. I can't get death certificates, as they died before they were issued in Ga!!! Very frustrating. Thanks for your offer. Wanda Hall
I would like to reccommend the Troup County Archives. They will do brief ( 30 minutes) look-ups for free. They will do Troup county and Northwest Georgia, if I am not mistaken. Meriwether county is right next door to Troup, so they might very well have info on Meriwether Co. residents. I recently wrote them and inquired about obituaries on my great-grandparents and great-great grandmother, and received a wealth of information in return. Here is the url. http://www.lgc.peachnet.edu/archives/tcarchiv.htm or you can get there the long ways by going to http://www.lagrangenews.com and hitting history, then archives. best of luck in your searches. Hi Suzzanne, We don't have a lot of subscribers, our list is only about a week old! But I did find that the location you are seeking is called White Sulfur Springs. Below is the location coordinates. I am sure that you should be able to find a later map, somewhere online. Try http://www.cyndislist.com/ga.htm#Maps I don't have any information on your family, but repost your message in a few weeks. Hi, I'm so excited that this list now exists! I'm searching for information about my great-great grandparents: JOHN POWELL PORTER b. Jan, 16, 1828, perhaps in Gwinnett Co., GA m. MARTHA TRAYLOR (1832-1862) of Troup Co.,1853, in Troup Cp., GA d . November 27, 1900, I believe in Meriwether Co., GA They had three daughters: 1. MARTHA "Mattie" PORTER b. abt 1855 m. THOMAS J. Dec. 05, 1878 to WALTER BRANNON CARNES of Jonesboro, Clayton, Co., GA d. March 04, 1948, Fayette Co., GA **And possibly a son named J. P. PORTER. (This info from an elderly relative who remembers a J. P. Porter coming to visit his sister SARAH PORTER CARNES.) JOHN POWELL PORTER enlisted in the Confederate Army at Sulphur Springs in Meriwether Co., in 1861 He appears in the 1860 GA Census in Mt. Sulphur, Meriwether Co. and in the 1870 GA Census in White Sulphur Springs, Meriwether Co. I'm guessing that when John Powell Porter lived in Troup, it was close to the line with Meriwether, as he went there to enlist, and later shows up on censuses for the same area. **Can anyone tell me whether (White?)
