Thanks. None of those names look familiar but I am saving anyway. Who knows? They may turn up somewhere down the line. Pam
Pam, I agree that Meriwether County is a lovely area. I did not mean to offend you when I asked about the migration pattern. What I was questioning was the large influx of people at this period of time. It was strictly a matter of the time and not questioning the quality of the area. I apologize if I caused you any offense. I am looking for the family of Thomas R. Rowe and his wife Mary. They had 8 children: Robert A. Rowe Alexander Rowe b. 1857 John B. Rowe b. abt 1857 Sarah L. Rowe b. abt. 1861 Luther M. Rowe b. abt 1864 Mary Rowe b. abt 1865 Hugh Rowe b. abt 1868 Emmitt Rowe b. abt 1872 I have an Alexander Hamilton Rowe who died in Muscogee Co in 1917. I am trying to connect this family with my Alexander. I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have any connection or knowledge of this family. Elaine

Since I've learned never to make assumptions (I would not have guessed anyone of my family would have been from MD, either, and frankly my sources for this material are sketchy), then let me ask another way-- do you have any HARRIs or RHODES intermarrying with your EVANS? Mrs. Pinkston writes: "When the county was first settled there were many more white people than negroes in the county; since most settlers had few, if any slaves; by 1850 the population was fifty percent negro. The 1890 report showed 11,539 negroes and 9,201 whites." That's all I can find now but I'll keep looking for more facts. millie ELIZABETH RUSSO wrote: > Anyone have an idea how much of that tripling of population from 1830 to > 1840 was due to slave importation? > > Millie Cook wrote: > > > > >From the book "Historical Account of Meriwether County 1827 - 1974" compiled > > by Regina P. Hello, I live in Meriwether County and would like to know what line you are talking about that migrated to Meriwether County. This is a beautiful area so I can see why people wanted to move here. Close to the Flint River maybe. Good farmland. Rolling hills. Who knows? What other lines that you know are from Meriwether County. I have been researching the Brown line.....(one of them anyway)!!!!! Pam Brown
Anyone have an idea how much of that tripling of population from 1830 to 1840 was due to slave importation? Elizabeth, Have appreciated all your info on the Harris list. I also have RIVES, but my Meriwether County lines are BRILEY, GARRIS, and FARLEY. Ron Massey Shreveport, LA
I am new to the list and want to say hello. I am researching the HARRISes and the SLATONs and related families of Meriwether. Would love to hear from anyone familiar with these families. I have constructed several web pages related to these families and to Meriwether County. Let me know if anyone looks familiar. Some of the pages begin here: http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Choir/1824/meriwether.html Elizabeth DuBois Russo
Jim, do you have any of your REEVES line marrying into WARFORD (Ky.) or DUBOIS (AL) lines? Elizabeth DuBois Russo Jim Sturgis wrote: > > Elaine, > > One of the immediate reasons which may have drawn families to > Meriwether County, including my Reeves line, was the land lottery about > 1831, disposing of the Cherokee lands. >
Elaine, One of the immediate reasons which may have drawn families to Meriwether County, including my Reeves line, was the land lottery about 1831, disposing of the Cherokee lands. From the Meriwether County Historical Society: December 1824, the Lower Creek Indiana ceded by the Treaty of Indian Springs, the last of their Georgia land. On 11 Dec 1826, the Legislature divided the land between the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers, Newnan to Albany, into five sections, in which the lots were distributed by lottery to citizens of previously organized counties of Georgia. These five counties were too large, and on 24 December 1827 the Legislature formed Meriwether County from part of Troupe County, and it was named after Gen. David Meriwether (1755-1823), a Revolutionary War hero, legislator, congressman, who negotiated with the Indians. The first officers of Meriwether County were commissioned 7 July 1828. A site near the center of the county was agreed upon, named Greenville, after Gen Nathaniel Greene. Maybe this is the partial answer for migration. Millie, my family came to Meriwether during the early 1800s. My ancestrial grandfather was Hugh Walton Ector who gave the land for the town, I understand. The Ector family are planning a reunion October 7, 8 and 9 and we will base out of the United Methodist Church there in Greenville. Our goal, of course, is to learn more of our heritage. Maybe you are well versed enough in the history of the town and/or county to give us a tour. We're all bringing our cemetery-stomping shoes. There was a town named Ector and the family had some sort of mill. We want to find out about that too. I would love to hear from you if you have any interest in our quest. Sincerely, Rayanne Ector-Cain Eector3@aol.com
>From the book "Historical Account of Meriwether County 1827 - 1974" compiled by Regina P. Pinkston "Meriwether County grew rapidly during the first ten years after it was organized in 1828. U.S. census reports show an increase in population from 4,422 in 1830 to 14,132 in 1840. The population continued to grow steadily until 1920 when it reached a total of 26,168. This was a period of maximum cotton production and mill employment in the county." millie cook Elaine Miller wrote: > I have just found another family line that went to Meriwether Co. in the > 1800's.
