    1. [GAMERIWE] Researching ALFORD family
    2. whnok13
    3. Hi All, I am new to the list and am researching the family of JULIUS CAESAR ALFORD who married Eliza COOK. They lived in Meriwether County at some point in the 1830 and Eliza died in 1843 in the county. My records regarding the four Cook daughters are very sketchy at this point in my research and I am in need of your assistance. There were 4 COOK sisters in all. Louisa Cook married Josiah ROGERS in Greene County, GA; Eliza married Julius Caesar ALFORD 14 March 1821 in Greene County, GA; Jane W. Cook married Francis CONE who later became a judge 8 Jan 1829 also in Greene County, GA and George Ann Cook married the Rev. Charles SANDERS. If you have a history of Meriwether County resource book and/or any other resource that might provide further insight into these 4 couples, I would greatly appreciate your help. Best regards, Jane

    1. [GAMERIWE] Historical Marker
    2. I have a picture of a historical marker which I found in a book, whose name I did not keep. The marker has the Georgia symbol 1776 and then "MERIWETHER COUNTY: "Meriwether County, "Second Home" of Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt and birthplace of three Ga. Governors (their names) was created by Act of Dec. 14, 1827 from Troup County. It was named for Gen. David Meriwether (1755-1823), Revolutionary soldier, legislator, Congressman. Representing the government in various negotiations with the Indians, he had unusual influence with their Chiefs. First officers of Meriwether County, commissioned Feb. 7, 1828, were Joseph Weaver, Sheriff; Hugh W. Ector, Clerk Sup. Ct; A.M.Weathers, Clk. Inf. Ct; Joseph Crockett, Surveyor, John Edmonds, Coroner." Could anyone tell me the exact site of this marker? The Ector family will be meeting at the First UMC October 7th, and I'm sure everybody would like to take a snap of this marker. Thanks. Rayanne Ector-Cain

    3. My ggg grandfather is Joseph O'NEAL aka Jo. I have found him in the 1870 Meriweather Census but not the 1860 Meriweather Census. I did find Isaac O'NEAL (I think this is his brother) in the 1860 census living with P.C. THRASH, fam/dwell. 893, Jones Mill, Meriweather Co. Fam/dwell. 901, of same, there is an Atlas O'NEAL age 48, wife Angeline and family. Isaac and Joseph O'NEAL, and Elmore C. THRASH were all in the same company and unit in the Civil War, Co. F, 41st Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Howard's Infantry, from Meriweather Co., GA. Isaac was wounded in Atlanta (in the war) and died in Macon in 1864. Joseph married Nancy Elizabeth BROWN on Dec. 13, 1866 in Greenville, Meriweather Co., GA. Nancy was the daughter of John S. BROWN b. ca. 1811. Nancy's mother was Mary. Other siblings of Nancy were: Henry, Mercer, Mary and Thomas. This Brown family was in Wayne Co., GA in 1850 and Meriweather in 1860. By 1880 the O'Neal family was living in Pike Co., Arkansas along with several other O'Neal's. Joseph and Nancy's children were: Charles b. 1869 GA, Sum_er (either Sumner, Sumter, or Sumler) b. 1871 GA, Margie Ophelia b. 1872 GA ( my gg grandmother), and Mary Fannie b. 1876 GA. On Joseph's Civil War Pension Application, dated June 1904, it has the signatures of D.M. THRASH and R.B. THORNTON, as Comrades during the Civil War. They were living in Pike Co., Arkansas, in 1904. Would like to know where Joseph O'Neal was in 1860 and who his parents were. Thank you for your interest. Stacey Poe

    3. Hello, Looking for information on FELTMAN family that lived in Meriwether around 1850. There were several families there at that time. I am trying to trace the parents of George McDuffy Feltman specifically but think that any Feltmans there would be related. Can anyone help? Carey

    3. Hi Kellie, I don't know if the Thrash book contains information on the slaves of the Thrash families, but if it does can you look up Ollie Thrash. Her father was Ollie's mother slave master. I don't have Ollie's parents' names. Ollie married Sandy Peeples in 1896. Her second husband was Nathan Brown. Peace and Joy Imani

    3. Does anyone have any Whites in Meriwether? I have come across John and L. White (with their children)in the 1850 Meriwether census. The eldest son listed is a Wm., age 21, attending school, and was born in NC, as were both of his parents and some of his siblings. My known ancestor, William Robert White was born in NC and could probably be this same fellow. My Wm. Robert White married Mary Jane Shackelford in Meriwether in 1852. Please can anyone be of assistance? Thank you - Ann

    3. Hi Pam, I read your message about Cox Funeral Home. Are you talking about the one in Manchester, Georgia? A beautiful white, older home with a wide front porch and a swing. At least in the 70's & 80's. If so that is where I grew up and I knew most all of the old residents of that area. I also have family still there. Friends of ours usually come to the gun show in Vegas whenever it is there and we are going also either in January of February 2000. I am so excited. Do have a James Evans in your family?
