I would be most grateful to find if there is a marriage for a Thomas or a William Black in Meriwether Co. My great grandfather was listed with both names. I do not know his wifes name as it was unreadable on 1850 cencus. His son Issac Russell was born in 1843. in Meriwether Co. Also had a daughter Nan or Nancy. In 1860 children werelisted as orphans. I would estimate the marriage of Thomas or William was about 1840. A few years before or just after. In family records Thomas is most often written as Isaac father but I was also told it was William. This family is my brickwall. Thanks so very much for checking. Elaine s88897@aol.com
Does anyone know anything about the PHELPS family who lived in Meriwether Co., GA? I have Reuben in 1860 census, living in a Stricklin household. He was 26 years old. Jacob J. PHELPS, W. W. PHELPS and William PHELPS in 1860 census, Meriwether Co., Magadalena P.O. Elizabeth PHELPS married Barton, BENNETT 03/13/1834 Parmelia PHELPS married John SIMS 09/03/1835 Aquila PHELPS married Matilda GLASE 12/14/1838 I can not connect to any of them yet. My gg grandfather Wiley Barnes ROBERTS married Georgia Anna/Georgianna PHELPS/PHELTS in 1871 in Meriwether Co. If any one has ANYTHING on the PHELPS of Meriwether Co. please email me. If anyone has access to 1860 census it would tell me if she was listed as a child in Meri. Co. or if anyone can find her grave listed anywhere. She would have been listed as Georgia Anna/Georgianna ROBERTS as she was married at the time of her death. She died between 1877-1871. Thank you for any input that you can give. Cari

I have a list of Meriwether Co. Marriages 1828-1844 if anyone needs a look up. Cari
No I hadnt thought of that. I will try to find their address. I am presuming itwould be the court house. I do so appreciate your help. Elaine s88897@aol.com
Did you write Meriwether to see if there is a will or probate records for Thomas Black? This would give you a good time frame of his death or you might learn the exact date or at least the month. Good luck, Linda Johnson
Millie, You posted: <I want to encourage everyone to volunteer in your geographic area. Subscribe to the mailing list in the county where you live now. Even if you don't have a lot of time to spend at the library, you may just know of a local historian you could refer others too, you may know of a historical place nearby that someone is looking for, you may be able to help with directions to churches/cemeteries, etc.> What a wonderful idea! I'm ashamed to say I had never thought of it. I've received lots of help from folks like you and it is only fair to return the favor. It also just occurred to me that an ancestor I am tracing back to Virginia (and who is my brick wall) might have a connecting line of descendants looking for my ancestor who came to Alabama and we could possibly meet up on my local mailing list! An added incentive! I may take you up on your offer of cemetery photos another day. I don't have my info together right now. Thanks, Pam
