    1. [GAMERIWE] To List Owner, please reply
    2. David, I don't know if you saw the posting earlier regarding my mothers memoirs. She grew up in Meri. Co. and was born in 1920. The memoirs tell of the lifestyle from that time period. It's very well done and I don't think it would be offensive to anyone. Someone suggested that I send it in installments to the list. I have seen this done on other lists but would not want to do this without your OK. If you like, I could send it to you first and let you see if you thought it would be OK. Let me know. Cari

    2. Cari, I too would love to have a copy of your mom's memoirs. My dad also grew up 1897-1920 , and I was born in 1928, in Meriwether Co. I still remember the huge iron pots, with fires under them, for doing the wash, the old wood-burning cooking stoves, outhouses, etc. Those were wonderful days when everyone knew and trusted their neighbor and left their houses unlocked. 2. My mother grew up in Meriwether Co. She was born in 1920. A few years ago I had her write her childhood memories down on paper for me. It is not professional but well done and tells much about what it was like to grow up in that time period. It's fairly long, about 30 handwritten pages, I forget how many typed. If anyone is interested in reading it I would be glad to share it. She was raised on a farm. She talks about how they did the laundy, the types of stoves they used and how excited they were to get a new "Aladdin Lamp. Let me know if anyone is interested. Cari

    2. If a major house fire occured in 1910 in Meriwether County (White Sulphur Springs) where several children died and it was an African-American family, is it likely to have been reported in a local newspaper? Any input is appreciated. Cari

    3. Barbara, Do you have this book? Are there any JETERs in it? My triple great grandfather, Francis Jeter lived in Meriwether County. He had a plantation somewhere around there. A picture is in Brooks of Honey..., but not much information. 1. Re: [GAMERIWE] Marriage Look up
    2. Dear Elaine, Often times look-ups for enlistments are hard... look up this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/gamildefine.htm this is a 4 page description of the military research fields... not all soldiers were in the CSA...some were in the state guards, which protected the home state after the invasion... sometimes they joined nearby counties... Georgia had a militia since colonial times. The state was, and remains, organized into "Militia Districts". On your property tax bill, if you live in Georgia, will read, "GMD" which stands for "Georgia Military District"...so don't limit your search to counties only...their recruiting methods were not always by counties...and also the county boundary lines change.... there were also the Reserves which were 6 month enlistments try this look-up...some of my relatives from Meriwether county joined: Taylor County State Guard Troops State Guards - Cavalry Co H 12th (Robinson's) Regt Ga Cav State Guards- Taylor Infantry Capt Rucker's Co, 5th Regt Inf I hope this is not too much info for you... good luck barbara Milam thurmond

    1. [GAMERIWE] Thanks and the Marriage Lookups!
    2. Thanks to everyone for all your kind responses and thanks. I do enjoy helping. Today I will be cleaning my sad, dirty, pitiful house. It suffers due to genealogy. I don't do much genealogy on the weekends. It's time to spend with my "living" family. LOL If you email me between now and Monday with a request you probably won't hear from me until Monday. Have a wonderful weekend. Cari

    3. Thank you so much! I'm glad the HArrises weren't overwhelming as they usually are. Where was the CD from? I like to really document my sources seriously these days, and would appreciate knowing the manufacturer and CD #, etc. Otherwise, my source will just list your email address, if that is okay...
