Mary Nicholson, a schoolteacher, brought action against James S. Dillard for $400 special damage and $5,000 general, because he made certain statements impugning her character. As a consequence she lost her school and was kept from earning a living by teaching in the community. DillardÂ’s general and special demurrers were sustained in the lower court but the Supreme Court reversed this action and held that his language was calculated to injure her in her profession.
