Add'l information and directions can be obtained from Linda Snow Davis at the number listed below. Harris Confederate Memorial Service To Honor James B. Broxton, Cuthbert, Randolph Co., Georgia Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery Invitation Confederate Memorial Service There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. in Cuthbert, Randolph Co., Ga. to place a CSA marker on the grave of Private James B. Broxton, who served in Co. K, 17th Ga. Infantry. This Company enlisted out of Stewart and Webster Counties. Other counties that enlisted men in this Regiment were Decauter, Doughtery, Harris, Miller, Mitchell, Muscogee, Schley and Terrell. The unit served with Gen. Henry Lewis Benning under the command of Gen. James Longstreet from 1861 to 1865. Benning's Brigade was engaged in almost all of the major battles in the Eastern theater of the War, including Devil's Den at Gettysburg. A lifelong member of Trinity Methodist Church, Rubye Lewis has made this ceremony possible. Through her diligent research she has located the 87 year old granddaughter of Mr. Broxton. Due to her frail condition, Mrs. Berta Broxton Hobbs will not be able to attend. The surviving great grand children of Mr. Broxton are: Hal Hobbs, Leesburg, Ga., Roger Hobbs, Tifton, Ga., Mike Hobbs, Tifton, Ga., Denise Powell, Orlando, Fl., Ed Creamer, Albany, Ga., Ronnie Creamer, Albany, Ga., Betty Piercy, Albany, Ga., all of which plan to attend the ceremony. The family plans to video the service to play back to Ms. Berta Broxton Hobbs, who is very excited about this memorial to her grandfather. Also in attendance will be Linda Snow Davis, who is writing a Regimental History on the 17th Georgia Infantry Regiment. The service will be held at the Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery and will be sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stewart-Webster Camp # 1605. A wreath will be place on Mr. Broxton's gravesite and the guest speaker will be Mrs. Rena Cobb of the Mary Brantley Chapter # 446 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A salute will be fired by re-enactors of the 2nd Ga. Infantry, Stewart Greys, and the 17th Ga. Infantry Co. K, Webster Confederate Guards. For more information call Linda Snow Davis, 770-946-9848.
