A stockade fort, defended by block houses, this post was ordered erected by General John Floyd of Camden county, as he led a body of 400 Georgia Militiamen through this friendly Indian country to fight the Red Sticks across the Chattahoochee river in Alabama territory. Completed in October 1813, it was named in honor of Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, Naval hero of the War of 1812, whose message from the Battle of Lake Erie that "We have met the enemy and they are ours" gave him immortal fame. The couple left immediately after the ceremony for their home in Ellaville. Mrs. Dixon is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Williams. Reese, which occurred Monday afternoon of this week. Early Monday morning Mr. Reese went to his work at the Clements warehouse, where he remained until the noon hour. On his way home to dinner he went to the drug store to procure medicine for a headache from which he was suffering. When he reached the drug store he was in a state of collapse. Dr. Weaver who was there came to his assistance and having procured a carriage accompanied him home. Mr. Reese was unconscious when he reached his home and never rallied. He died about two o’clock in the afternoon. His burial was conducted by the Masons at the Methodist cemetery at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. A great concourse of people attended his funeral. A more popular man than Emmett Reese never lived in Marion County. He was a good citizen, an ideal husband and father and a humble Christian. His wife and children are not the sole mourners. His death is mourned by thousands of friends in Marion County. The Marion County Patriot, No. 37 Friday, September 25, 1908 Page Six A Card of Thanks We want to thank our friends in Buena Vista and Marion County for their goodness and loving sympathy to us in our sad bereavement. Mrs. E.B. Reese and Family The Marion County Patriot, No. 37 Friday, September 25, 1908 Page Six In Memory On Tuesday of last week the sad news reached us of the death of our friend, Mr. E.B. Reese. It came as a shock, not only to us, but to the whole community. We could hardly realize it, as but a short while since he was in our midst, apparently well and in the highest of spirits. This is something we know but little about. The day nor the hour is not known when we are to be called from this world to the great “beyond.” We feel that one of our best friends has gone. A good Christian, a man possessed of business qualifications and a friends to everyone. As a citizen he will be missed in the community, in the county and in the state by all who knew him. He enjoyed this lovely land and its liberty and was ever ready to help humanity. We feel his loss but give him up hoping to meet him again in the land of the blest. We offer sincere sympathy to the bereaved family in their affliction. The marriage to take place at the Methodist church June 24th. The Marion County Patriot, No. 25 Friday, June 26, 1908 Page One Stokes – Evans An important event of the mid-summer season was the wedding of Miss Evelyn Stokes to Mr. Frank Evans. The marriage took place Wednesday morning at nine thirty in the Methodist church, Gen. Clement A. Evans officiating. The church was elaborately decorated for the occasion, the arrangement of the altar being especially adopted for such a function. Pink and white with green was the color scheme of the occasion, quantities of pink hearts were used for the decoration. Tall ferns and palms were grouped within the railing, that a very graceful and pretty background was formed for the attendants, while the altar was tastily twined with smilax and now and then a pink heart was put in to carry out the heart effect of the wedding. Just in front of the altar was suspended two large white hearts, one was bordered with pink roses the other with white, these were linked together by an arrow, significant of the “two hearts that beat as one.” Mrs. Dallis, of LaGrange sang “You” very charmingly just before the ceremony. The bridal party entered the church to the strains of Lohengrin’s wedding march and left to the strains of Mendelsohn’s played by Miss Lucile Lowe. The bridesmaids wore white linen jumper suit with white picture hats, they carried bouquets of pink carnations and asparagus fern. Misses Katie Will McNeal and Minnie Lowe also wore linen suits with picture hats, they carried bouquets of pink roses and asparagus fern. Edge June 18th at the bride’s home in Glenalta, Ga. The Marion County Patriot, No. 25 Friday, June 26, 1908 Page One Smith – Edge The marriage of Miss Nina Smith and Mr. Chas. M. Edge was solemnized at the beautiful country home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owen W. Smith, Thursday afternoon at 5 o’clock. The house was beautifully decorated with palms, foliage, ferns and roses. Just before the bridal party entered the parlor Miss Jessye Watson, of Girard, Ala., very sweetly sang, “I Cannot Help Loving Thee,” after which the pretty bridesmaids, Misses Maybird Burt and Julia Mae Horne entered to the strains of Mendelsohn’s wedding march, rendered by Miss Watson. Following the bridesmaids came the groom with his best man, Mr. Roswell Hair. The bride entered with her maid of honor, Miss Clifford Smith. The impressive ceremony was performed by Rev. Hugh F. Oliver, in the presence of a number of relatives and friends. The groom is assistant cashier of the Buena Vista Loan and Savings Bank, and has won a host of lasting friends by his noble character. The bride is a thoroughly accomplished and attractive young lady and numbers her friends by those who know her. She was lovely in her wedding gown of white chiffon trimmed with Irish lace and made in becoming princess style. Her veil was caught by auburn hair by a wreath of lilies of the valley, and she carried a shower bouquet of roses. The maid of honor wore a becoming dress of soft material over pink silk and the bridesmaids wore pretty lingerie dresses with pink sashes and slippers and carried bouquets of pink carnations. Delicious refreshments were served after which the bridal party, accompanied by Messrs. Holcombe Smith, Garnett and Owen Edge left for Buena Vista. They were most delightfully entertained at an informal reception given them by Mrs. W.Z. Burt and Mrs. Cecil Burt at their attractive home.
