McCrary on December 25th. The Marion County Patriot, No. 51 Friday, January 1, 1909 Page One McNeal – Burt The marriage of Miss Katie Will McNeal and Mr. Willie Burt on Tuesday morning was the happy culmination of a most beautiful and interesting love affair that had existed since childhood. The marriage took place at the handsome home of the bride’s uncle, Mr. J.W. McCrary. The interior decorations for the occasion could not have been prettier. The entire lower floor of the home was thrown open. There was a wealth of the grand Southern smilaz used everywhere, together with a most exquisite collection of cut flowers, narcissus, carnations and roses. Banks of palms and ferns greeted the eyes of admiring guests. There was arranged at the folding doors between the double parlors, a beautiful arch of green and white, and promptly at 9 o’clock, to the strains of the wedding march rendered by Miss Alyce Foster, the bride’s maids, Misses Mershon and Burt, from one side and Misses Wooten and Mumfort, from an opposite side entered meeting around this archway, and following these came the petite lovely bride with her maid of honor, Miss Mildred Jackson, meeting the groom with his best man, Mr. Hudson Burt, and here under the canopy of green and white, the marriage vows were taken. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Hugh F. Oliver in a most beautiful and poetic manner. Mr. Burt, a prominent businessman, who makes his home in the cultivated town of Oxford, Ga., was reared in Buena Vista, and it was right here among us that he learned to love one of our fairest daughters. He is indeed to be congratulated upon winning Miss McNeal, a Christian lady of culture and refinement, a jewel, one that we feel will shine at all times, and should adversity come, as it does to many of us along the pathway of life, her lustre will then be most brilliant. Immediately after the ceremony the happy young couple were driven to the depot where they took the train for Oxford. The Patriot joins their many friends in extending congratulations and wishing them a long and happy journey through life. The Marion County Patriot, No. 51 Friday, January 1, 1909 Page Two Mrs. Geo. Lowe entertained at a very delightful 42 party for Miss Katie Will McNeal and Mrs. Henry Stokes, of Savannah, on Tuesday. The Marion County Patriot, No. 51 Friday, January 1, 1909 Page Two Of the many beautiful affairs in honor of Miss McNeal, none have been more enjoyable than that Monday evening when Mr. and Mrs. J.W. McCrary entertained at a 6 o’clock dinner. The Marion County Patriot, No. 51 Friday, January 1, 1909 Page Two A pretty compliment to Miss Katie Will McNeal and Wm. Burt, whose marriage took place on Tuesday was the luncheon at which Mr. and Mrs. W.Z. Burt entertained on Friday at their home. A delicious luncheon of five courses was served. The guests included the bridal party and relatives. The Marion County Patriot, No. 51 Friday, January 1, 1909 Page Two One of the very prettiest and most unique affairs of the season was on Xmas afternoon when Miss Alice Foster complimented Miss Katie Will McNeal with a “linen shower.” Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: The engagement notice article gives the wedding date as Dec. 25th, however, the date given by the paper in the marriage announcement would mean the marriage took place on Dec. 29th. There was a mention of a linen shower given on Christmas afternoon, which causes me to think the wedding date was most likely 12/29/1908. I'm not a researcher of this family and don't know the correct date, but have listed Dec. 29th as the wedding date. Crye Passed Away Mrs. D.E. Crye, of near Brantley, who has been a sufferer from rheumatism and confined to her bed for the past ten years, died at her home last Wednesday morning and was buried at the Methodist cemetery in Buena Vista yesterday after funeral services were held in the Methodist church. Mrs. Crye was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Atoway, the wife of the former treasurer of Marion Co., Mr. D.E. Crye and the mother of Mr. W.G. Crye. Mrs. Crye was about 50 years of age and is said to have been a very beautiful woman when young. She was a strict member of the Methodist church, a good woman and one beloved by all who knew her. She leaves a husband and one son, who have the sympathy of everyone besides a host of friends to mourn their loss. The Marion County Patriot, No. 52 Friday, January 8, 1909 Page One Card of Thanks We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to our neighbors and many friends for the sympathy and kindness shown us during the illness and death of our wife and mother. D.E. Crye and W.G. Crye The Marion County Patriot, No. 3 Friday, January 29, 1909 Page Four A Tribute of Sincere Thanks Retrospecting back over a hiatus of forty-one years, I find myself teaching my first school in west Georgia, at Juniper, near where the mammoth coffin factory now stands. At that time there was nothing of note about the place, except a large corn and flour mill of Smith & Chandler, under the superintendency of W.R. Attoway, the father of this subject. The school was small, and among its pupils was a bright, rosy cheek girl of some ten summers, whom any teacher would have loved for her evenness of temper and assiduity of habit. The schoolroom was a close proximity to this child’s home and her attendance was lker her deportment, faultless. At the tapping of the bell there was no tardiness, and through all those long years how memory depicts her in my mind, sitting quietly at her desk with a wealth of raven locks, held firmly back by a roach comb, exposing a fine forehead and temples of snowy complexion. After a term at Juniper, the teacher was induced to take a large school in the vicinity of Box Springs, a distance of some four miles, and this child was put in my charge together with other pupils that she might prosecute her studies. Blessed with a sunny disposition and the vigor of good health; the long walk to Pine Grove Academy added luster to her eyes and roses to her cheeks. This was the woman in embryo of Mrs. Mary Georgia Crye, who died at her home near Brantley Dec. 30, 1908. Twenty years ago Fate found me teaching Brantley School. I learned of her citizenship here, and sought a renewal of our former acquaintance. My predictions had been fully realized; the educated, polished, refined woman was the result. A man must be very vile in practice if he allows himself to drift clear aloof from the influence of a good woman and as faithful as I had endeavored to teach her young mind, now a devoted Christian. She often reminded me of the betterment of my own life, I profoundly respected her interest and hope it may yet be “as bread cast upon the waters.” Bed ridden for nearly eleven years before her death with Acute Rheumatism, and supported by the loving care and attention of a devoted husband and aunt, Mrs. Crye bore her sufferings with that fortitude along exemplified by the true Christian. To her only son, to her feeble husband, and aged father and mother, let it be kindly, humbly suggested, grieve not – There are no rheumatic pangs beyond the grave in the Elysium of the best. G.W. 1. Poem from 1908
    2. Hi List, Thought you would enjoy this. Carla Miles The Marion County Patriot, No. 45 Friday, November 20, 1908 Page Two Of Post-Mortem Praises I've noticed when a fellow dies, no matter what he's been - A saintly chap or one whose life was darkly steeped in sin - His friends forget the bitter words they spoke but yesterday, And now they find a multitude of pretty things to say. I fancy when I go to rest someone will bring to light Some kindly word or goodly act long buried out of sight; But, if it's all the same to you, just give to me instead The bouquets while I am living and the knocking when I'm dead. Don't save your kisses to imprint upon my marble brow, While countless maledictions are hurled upon me now; Say just one kindly word to me while I mourn here alone, And don't save all your eulogy to carve upon a stone! What do I care if when I'm dead the Bloomingdale Gazette Gives me a write-up with a cut in mourning border set? It will not flatter me a bit, no matter what is said, So kindly throw your bouquets now and knock me when I'm dead. It may be fine when one is dead, to have the folks talk so, To have the flowers come in loads from relatives you know; It may be nice to have these things for those you leave behind, But just so far as I'm concerned I really do not mind. I'm quite alive and well today and while I linger here, Lend me helping hand at times - give me a word of cheer. Just change the game a little bit; just kindly swap the decks, For I will be no judge of flowers when I've cashed the checks. New York Sun
