    2. Looking for information on the Cutoff District of Marion Co. GA. What quality of land was this area for farming? Where would the Post Office of Churchill be located in this district? Are there any cemeteries located in this District or did people just bury their kin on the farm or the land they owned? Were there any Churches in this district before 1870? My Richardson and Clark families lived in this area. Thanks for your time. Nora

Mrs. Hays has been in feeble health for several years and her death was not unexpected. Her remains were buried at the Pine Level Cemetery Saturday, Jan. 23rd, by the side of her husband, Stephen W. Hays, who died Nov. 5, 1879, in the presence of a large assembly of people. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C.B.G. Johnston in a very impressive manner. She leaves one son, Mr. Jim Hays, and two daughters, Miss Mattie Hays, and Mrs. Laura Hart, all of Rabbit, besides a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Mrs. Hays was about 76 years old, has been a consistent member of the Methodist church since childhood. She was one of the few who constituted the church at Pine Level nearly forty years ago. She did not take a very active part in the work of the church, but her good influences were seen and felt in her home by her children and their neighbors and friends. Her life was such as bear evidence of a pure Christian woman. She bore her afflictions, which were long continued, with patience which but few can do. No doubt she hated to leave her loved ones but was ever ready to meet the call of her Master. “Truly she was a good woman.” Her children have the sweet consolation that she is at “Rest.” Annie File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/marion/obits/h/hays6870ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb

Smenner Died Friday Dr. J.E. Smenner died at his home in Columbus on Friday morning last, after having been in ill health for some time. He had been a sufferer of Bright’s disease and had been ill for two or three months, his condition several weeks ago having been regarded at that time as quite critical. He seemed to rally from the attack, however, and his family and friends hoped that his life might be prolonged for years. He was in his drugstore as usual on Thursday and so his death was quite a shock to his friends. Heart failure is supposed to have been the immediate cause of death. Dr. Smenner was one of the most popular men in the city and among his intimate friends was thoroughly beloved for his nobility and generosity of character. He was strong and sincere in his friendship and was a man of many truly admirable traits, and all who knew him intimately had for him the most genuine sentiments of esteem and friendship. The deceased was 53 years of age and spent a majority of the years of his manhood in Columbus. He was a resident of Columbus a good many years ago and moved away returning about a dozen years ago. For quite a while he was proprietor of the Rose Hill Pharmacy, but left and came to Buena Vista where he resided a year or two. He again entered the drug business of Mr. Ralph O. Howard, at the corner of Broad and Eleventh streets. He disposed of the business a year or two ago and acquired the Waverly Pharmacy, which he was conducting at the time of his death. He was also proprietor of the Jordan City Pharmacy. Dr. Smenner was a Lutheran, and attended the church of St. Mary, the Virgin. He was also one of the most prominent members of the Masonic fraternity in Columbus, being a member of the Columbus Lodge and also the Knights Templar. He was an ardent Mason, thoroughly imbued with the high principles of this order, and his daily life exemplified its beautiful precepts. Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by six children, Isabel, Olivia, Edwin, Bessie, Edwina and Anna Smenner, all of Columbus. The funeral took place from the church of which he was a member, at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon and he was interred at Riverdale cemetery. Rutherford and bore the spirit of their darling baby, J.B, Jr., heavenward. The dear little one was apparently well Sunday night when the family retired, and oh, how sad for the loving and tender mother to wake and find her babe in the slumber from which none awake. It is hard for us to part with our loved ones in their youth and beauty, but Thy will be done. Many of the older people in Marion County remember back in the early seventies when Miss Carrie lived in Buena Vista and was a general favorite among the people. She was a lady of brilliant intellect, a charming conversationalist and endeared every one to her by her womanly graces. She was a sister of the late Judge Mark Blandford, who used to live in Buena Vista and in the early days of the sixties raised a regiment and became its colonel. Colonel Blandford was a fearless soldier and while on the field of carnage leading his regiment he lost an arm. On returning home, he was elected to the Confederate Congress and after the war he resumed his law practice in Buena Vista and after a few years he moved to Columbus where he was regarded as a leader of the bar. A few years after his removal to Columbus, he was elected to the supreme bench, where he left his impress as one of the truly great lawyers who occupied that bench. Judge Blandford and Miss Carrie Blandford had a sister who lived in Marion County, Miss Fannie Stevens, a lady of superior mind, who died at her home near Buena Vista a few years ago and her remains were interred at Ramah. Mrs. Stevens was the grandmother of Dr. Mark Hollis, Col. Howell Hollis, Mr. Tom Hollis, Miss Nannie Clare Hollis and Mrs. Sam Croxton. The remains were accompanied from Columbus by Mr. John Blandford, Miss Lucy Blandford and Col. Howell Hollis. Kilcrease, arrived at Doyle last Wednesday at 4 p.m., from Milledgeville, where she had been an inmate of the state sanitarium for the past eighteen months. It was a sad spectacle at the depot when the train stopped, all her former schoolmates had assembled to met her, but all was silent as six stalwart men took the casket bearing all that was mortal of their little friend, and gently putting it in a wagon, it was conveyed to her mother’s home a few hundred yards away, where it rested until 9 a.m. on Thursday, and was then taken to Tazewell and buried about 12 or 1 o’clock. The bereft family have the heartfelt sympathy of all who know them.
