All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00010.html#0002476 May 29, 2005, 10:25 pm The Butler Herald February 7, 1918 The Butler Herald Thursday, February 7, 1918, #13 Page Five Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Peed Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary The home of Mr. and Mrs. L.T. Peed, near Union Church, in this county, was the scene of an unusually happy occasion yesterday when the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Peed, celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. Fifty years ago Mr. Aplin B. Peed and Miss Delucia McNair both of Marion County, were united in marriage. During all of these years Providence has smiled abundantly upon them, not so much in this world’s goods, though of this they have had a sufficiency, but in health, in congenial and happy association and in the rearing of a number of fine sons and daughters, all of whom like themselves devout Christians, and are making the world brighter, richer and more noble by their living in it. They have raised three sons and two daughters as follows: J.R. Peed, of Montezuma, L.T. and L.A. Peed, of this county, Mrs. R.H. Bohler, of Marshalville and Mrs. M.R. Foy,of this county. All of these are now living, who with their children were present on this exceedingly happy occasion. The number of grandchildren present was 34, while there were also 8 great-grandchildren. A sumptuous dinner was served on a long table that groaned under its load, arranged under the oaks in front of the home. These excellently prepared refreshments were greatly relished by the kinspeople, friends and many neighbors, who were invited to share the pleasure of the day. After dinner Rev. M.T. Gaultney assembled the guests, with Mr. and Mrs. Peed, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the center of the circle, and paid a lofty tribute to the lives of the honorees of the occasion. He was followed by Mr. Frank Foy, Rev. L.A. Harrell and others. All of these were touching, and the shouts that have been so often heard around old Union Church were revived. Songs appropriate to the occasion and favorites of Mr. and Mrs. Peed were sung, nearly everyone present joining in the singing. Mr. and Mrs. Peed are among the truest citizens in the county to their religious and other convictions against whom perhaps naught has ever been said. They have contributed in a large way to high moral and religious standing of the community in which the greater part of the fifty years of their life have been spent. Mr. Peed and his noble companion have been the recipients of many hearty congratulations upon the occasion of the anniversary of their wedding. Upon Mr. and Mrs. L.T. Peed, who provided for and so hospitably entertained their guests on this occasion, showers of congratulations and thanks have also fallen. Mr. and Mrs. Peed received many valuable gifts which in a very small way expressed the admiration and esteem of each donor. Those present from a distance were: J.R. Peed and family, of Montezuma; R.H. Bohler and family, of Marshallville; F.G. Peed and daughter, of Winchester; F.R. Peed and wife, of Montezuma; W.A. Bartlett, of Marshallville; Mr. and Mrs. I.W. Garrett, of Charing, the former being present at the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Peed. Mr. R.M. Williams had a light stroke of paralysis last week, much improved at this time. On last Sunday morning your humble scribe, in company with Mr. G.C. Persons, boarded the train at Doyle and took a trip to Americus. We would not have gone, but we had promised a certain young lady upon her departure a few days since to be gone for a season, that we would look after Cleve for her during her absence, and we do not wish to alarm the lady, but we came near loosing him and that too, upon more then one occasion, also in more than one sense of the word "loose" he was hard to get away. We arrived in the city upon schedule time and went immediately, in company with Mr. Gordon Jordan, out to the Agricultural College, arriving in due time we were ushered into the private office of the principal, Prof. J.M. Collum, than whom there is no more affable and thorough bred gentleman. We were shown through the buildings by Prof. Collum until the dinner hour, when we retired to the spacious dining hall and partook heartily of the substantials calculated to satisfy and regal the innerman. Here we met Capt. C.L. Peacock, Prof. Cunningham, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Gresham and charming daughter, Miss Atta Bell, and many others. After having did awful justice to the bountiful dinner, the Principal Hon. J.M. Collum, and I took a stroll over the adjacent grounds and buildings. We were shown many tools made by the students, but the one that gave us the greatest surprise, was as fine a razor as any gentleman might be proud to possess. Mr. Collum informed us that he had just shaven with it that morning and he looked as slick as a peeled onion. In the course of our stroll over the buildings we were shown into the largest, best planned and furnished auditorium that has ever been our pleasure to enter. Prof. Collum went into detail explaining the past, present and future work of the institution. The building is situated upon a moderate elevation, the grounds are laid out regularly and after a beautiful and artistic pattern, it is surrounded by broad fields of fertile lands. The college stands about one-eighth of a mile east of the S. & L. Railroad. By early autumn they will have the electric railway completed out to the institution, then it will be easier of access. We had but about 3 hours to spend and were hurried through, so about 2:15 we bade our host and hostess an adieu and made our way back to the C. of Ga. Depot, boarded our train and was soon speeding our journey homeward, arriving at Doyle on schedule time we disembarked, knowing we had spent the day pleasantly, believing it was profitable, we winded our way up dusty Cotton Avenue, arriving at our domicile feeling wiser, younger and better, all to the credit of our first trip on the sly to the city of Americus. Plow Boy The Marion County Patriot, No. 19 Friday, May 15, 1908 Page Eight Doyle Candidates are swarming these balmy days, but Judge John Hanner keeps them off with his old hat and continues sawing wood.
