This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford-Watford-Hubbard-Hammock Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Rd.2ADE/665 Message Board Post: I am researching my g-grandfather, William Henry Whadford, 1860’s-1939. His original surname/family connection may be Wadford, Watford, Wafford, Wofford, Wolford, Walford, Woodford, Whitford, Halford, Alford or a close variation from Marion County with Alabama connections. William Henry Whadford was supposedly born September 15, 1862(?) in Alabama(?) approximately during the Civil War years (different years on different censuses 1900-1930) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas and/or Georgia to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. What happened to him next is unknown, as he may have been sent to an orphanage or home, but at some point, he was claimed by a supposed “uncle” where he may have been an indentured servant on a farm. This may have been in Alabama or Florida, but ran away with supposed “cousins” when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas. The family is able to trace him from his first marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Te! xas. There is an 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423 that lists a Willie Wadford, but I cannot find any further information: Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (Annie, (N)Annie, Ammie short for Amelia?), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. There is also an 1880 census of Butler County, Oaky Streak, Alabama, page 496 that lists a William Wadferd and I cannot find any further information on this family/listing either: Hammock, George, age 49, M, W, Farmer, b. Alabama. Sarah, age 49, F, W, Wife, b. Alabama. Elizabeth, age 18, F, W, Daughter, b. Alabama. Wadferd, William, age 24, M, W, Laborer, b. Alabama. This child was apparently buried in an unmarked grave at Ellaville cemetery. If there are any Harvey researchers out there who might know who this is, I would really like to add a notation to our Schley county on-line cemetery information. Because of the young age of the child and the fact this is 1895, she would have most probably never appeared on a census. Any help here appreciated. Harris The Schley County News Thursday, July 25th 1895 No. 29 OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Mirk Harvey sympathize with them in the loss of their bright little daughter. The little one was sick for several weeks and despite the tenderest care, its pure spirit passed away Tuesday morning to the bosom of Him who said--"Suffer little children to come unto me." The remains were interred in our cemetery Wednesday morning.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I can definitely "relate" to this and plan on sending it to all my relatives!!! Hi Virginia, I'm related to Michael Watson through his son, Perry M. Watson. I have limited information on the family, but will be glad to share what I have. Most of the research I have on Michael's children comes from Kit Elkins, another Watson family researcher. If anyone else has information for the Watson family, I would like to correspond with you. I've listed the details below. Carla Miles #1 pg 312 29 Dec 1858 A.J. Youngblood and his wife Serena Ann Youngblood, formerly Serena Ann Watson to Jonathan B. McCrary (Talbot) $150 12th Dist LL53,43,22 (1/5 parts of) 506 acres more or less Wit: John W. Tenn?, J.A. McCants Recorded: July 12, 1859 #1 Sarena (Serena) A. Watson was the daughter of Michael Watson and his second wife, Sarah. She was born about 1836 and married Andrew Youngblood in Taylor County on 5/20/1855. #2 pg 312 1 Jan 1859 Marion Co. Calvin Ohern and wife, Winney Ohern formerly Winney Watson (Marion Co) to Jonathan B. McCrary (Talbot) $150 12th Dist LL53,43,22 (1/5 parts of) 506 acres more or less Wit: David Bray, Willis Waston Recorded: July 12, 1859 #2 Winny Watson was the youngest child of Michael Watson and his second wife, Sarah. She was born 5/13/1842 and married Calvin O'earn. Winny passed away in 1912. Willis Watson was the second child of Michael and his first wife. Her name is unknown. Willis was born on 10/14/1808 in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Ann Bolen, the marriage date is unknown. Elizabeth was born about 1818 and her date of death is unknown. Willis died on 4/18/1878 in Alabama. #3 pg 313 Marion Co. 1 Jan 1859 Robert C. Bailey and wife Sarah, formerly wife of Mikail Watson, dec'd to Jonathan B. McCrary (Talbot) $150 12th Dist LL53,43,22 (1/5 parts of) 506 acres more or less Wit: David Bray, Willis Waston Recorded: July 12, 1859 #3 Sarah was Michael's second wife. I have no other information for her. Willis Watson's info is listed under #2. #4 pg 323 Early 14 July 185? Julius Watson (Henry Alabama) to Jonathan McCrary $150 one undivided fifth of 12th Dis LL22 LL53 506 acres Wit: Em W. Cotten, Recorded: Aug 18, 1859 [NOTE: This must have been the estate of Michael Watson] #4 Julius Moore Watson was the oldest child of Michael and Sarah Watson. Julius was born about 1834 in South Carolina. He married Sarah Elizabeth Parker. This is all the information I have for him. Additional notes about the Watson family: Michael Watson was born in 1775 in South Carolina. His first wife's name is unknown, they had eight children: Richmond Watson, Willis Watson, Sealy Watson Elkins, Mary "Polly" Watson Elkins, Benjamin R. Watson, Michael Perry Watson ( in my research I've never seen Perry go by the name of Michael. His name was listed this way in Michael Watson's will. All of the records I've found have his name as Perry M. Watson), Arthur A. Watson, Elizabeth Ellen Watson Hart. Richmond and Benjamin Watson stayed in South Carolina their entire lives. Willis and Perry Watson moved to Georgia as well as their sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. I'm not sure if Sealy Watson stayed in SC or moved to GA. It is thought Michael Watson married his second wife, Sarah, about 1833. Their children were: Julius Moore Watson, Sarena A. Watson Youngblood, Elijah Watson and Winny Watson Ohearn. Michael Watson must have moved from SC to GA sometime between 1834 and 1836, according to the birthdates of his children. Julius was born abt. 1834 in SC and Sarena followed in 1836 and her birthplace is given as GA. Michael Watson's will was dated 11/20/1844 and it was destroyed by fire: Court of Ordinary July Term 1846 It appearing to the Court upon the oath of Thos. Burge and Burton W. Dowd that the within is a copy in substance of the original Will and that the original has been destroyed by fire. Therefore Ordered by the Court that the within Copy be established in lieu of said Original. Solomon Wall J.I.G. T. R. Nutt J.I.G. Jordan Wilcher J.I.G. I don't know the exact date of Michael's death. The schedule of goods of his estate was dated 5/31/1845, so he died sometime before this date. Most likely in May of 1845. His burial place is unknown. Michael Watson's will and schedule of goods from his estate are posted in the Marion County Archives. Carla Miles
I'm piecing together the 5 people who would have been involved in the land that had previously belonged to Michael Watson. He actually bought the lots in 1838 -- so they were in Marion County at the time. Anybody researching Michael Watson or Robert C. Bailey family? I'm not sure when he died -- but probably around 1859. Look at the census below -- and it gives the children in the 1850 Marion Co census -- but since these mention 1/5 some of the children must not have lived. BAILEY, Robert C. married Sarah C. Watson Nov 19 1850 (Marion County) The 1860 Taylor Census lists them again in the household of Robert Bailey... Eliza 13, Robert C. 11; Mary R. 9 pg 312 29 Dec 1858 A.J. Mulkey West, which was solemnized Saturday morning at 11:30 at the home of the bride at Tazewell. The Rev. Mr. Truelock performed the ceremony, which was witnessed only by relatives. Elaborate decorations were carried out in red, white and blue. Lieut. Henry McGee, of Talbotton, was best man. Mrs. Lois Passmore furnished the music and at the close of the ceremony played the Star Spangled Banner, when everyone stood at attention. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Mr. E.H. McMichael, and was lovely in a suite of dark blue and dark hat with blue trimmings. Her bouquet was of brides roses an swansonia. Immediately after the ceremony Lieutenant and Mrs. West left for Atlanta. From there they will go to Chattanooga where Lieutenant West will be in training at Camp Greenleaf.
