    1. Re: [GAMARION] Ga-Schley-Marion Co. Military (Lewis A. Hogg)
    2. Harris Hill
    3. According to the Marion history book by Rena Cobb, Lewis Anderson Hogg was the brother of James Euclidus Hogg, both being sons of James Hogg of South Carolina. However, there is a mention that one of their brothers Samuel Hogg was born 1811. That would seem to be too early for the Lewis A. Hogg in the pension application, as his birth date given in the pension papers was 25 April 1836. Not impossible, but unusual. Perhaps someone on this list can clarify. 1. [GAMARION] Dec issue - The Taylor Tracer
    2. Crilley
    3. My Taylor Tracer arrived yesterday -- just full of interesting articles. Featured this time is the Wesley School located in the northwest section of the county in the community of Wesley. Mr. Adams traces the history through new paper clippings beginning with on in Feb 1890. Also included are several photos of classes (1926,1929,1934) and enrollment for 1926-27. IBetty Gassett Garrard write a delightful story about attending the school in 1947. Even though you may not have relatives directly connected with Wesley School, you do get a very good picture of what school life was like in "those days" in Taylor county. The 1889 newspaper clippings are always interesting. If you had a Masonic ancestor, you may be interested in knowing the Lodge was constituted in 1850 -- and they list the names of those who were dead in 1889 from the membership. If you have done any research in Taylor, you'll recognize so many of those names as leaders in the early days of Taylor County. There are so many personal details mentioned -- and I was so delighted to see the notice of the 2nd marriage of my g-grandfather, James J. Ruffin to Mrs. Carrie Lucas "at the residence of the bride in Panhandle District". I had known the date, but the extra description of so nice to read. There's a detailed account of "The Hanging of Blackman". And I'm sure all of you will have similar experiences. Because of the closeness of the counties, there are frequent referrals to Talbot, Marion, Schley, Crawford in the marriages, deaths, and in some cases actual columns pertaining to the area. Remember this is the time to re-subcribe for the coming year... http://www.rootsweb.com/~gatchgs/index.htm This page gives the details and also you can see the Index to all the back issues -- which are still available from John Adams. 3. I got the good news that Waco Genealogy Library here in Texas is going to subscribe to The Taylor Tracer this year. I've been working on them for years -- so don't give up if you've also been asking your library. Whenever you are researching in ANY library -- no matter the state -- tell them about The Taylor Tracer and how helpful it would be for researchers. Also mention that it is included in PERSI (that's the master index for Genealogy Quarterlies) --- which is a big plus for researchers. Even though many of us are too far to really attend the Society meetings, we can do our part by telling others about the great job that is being done! Virginia Crilley

    3. Don Collin's shared the pension application of Enoch Collins...who was a member of Pruden's Artillery... This led me to seek info about this group... Enoch Collins was a member from "seven months from 1864 to 1865" -- and perhaps it was one of those formed near the close of the war. anyway, as I glanced down this list -- I recognized some other Taylor County men... it seemed perhaps these were older men (the ones too old for a normal regiment). Take a look and see if you locate any of your ancestors. I'd love to gather more information about this unit and post it on our pages. http://ranger95.crosswinds.net/civil%20war/georgia/ Scroll down to Artillery and it is in alphabetical order. Thought you might glance at this list and see if you recognized any other names. At 07:46 PM 12/10/2003 -0800, you wrote: >[email protected] Virginia Crilley

    1. [GAMARION] Rebecca Collins Obit - Mrs. Enoch
    2. Crilley
    3. Don Collins [email protected] Rebecca Collins Obituary published Tuesday, April 2, 1889 Butler Herald. REBECCA COLLINS 1810-1889 Mrs. Rebecca, consort of E.F. Collins of Taylor County, departed this life February 15th, 1889, at the advanced age of 79 years and 4 months. The deceased was born in South Carolina and moved from that state to Georgia at the age of 12 years. She was married in youth to E. F. Collins in Houston County, Georgia, with whom she lived in wedlock until her death. She leaves with her husband, seven surviving children to deeply mourn their loss, for they could not but feel sadly bereaved at the loss of a friend, so long tried and always found true: for, as a wife and companion too much could not be said of Sister Collins, and then the half would not be told. As a mother, she was tender and loving, untiring and unceasing in her care, in providing for her family. Always rising early and toiling late, without allowing herself time to rest (when able to toil) and oftimes, doubtless, when her wearied body would invite to rest; her willing steps were heard, performing her daily duties and her cheerful voice, kind words and bright contenance, diffuse sunshine, joy, and gladness to the entire family circle; therefore to say that she was a true and devoted companion, a kind and loving mother, is only to repeat what is well known to be true by all who knew her best. As a neighbor, she has always been peaceble, quiet, kind, and obliging, charitable and liberal to the poor and afflicted. As a Christian, she was devoted and her christian life is left unspotted to her brethren and sisters, husband, and children, and to the community in which she lived and died. She joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Bethel, Houston County, in youth and was a member there until she moved with her husband to Taylor County (then Marion). She was one of the number constituted at Prosperity, Taylor County, where she lived a humble, devoted and much beloved member until her death and where her body now lies; and as it was my priviledge to often meet her at that place. I have thought that I had often seen her contenance brighten with heavenly light, while hearing of Jesus; and what he had done in love and mercy for sinners. While the big, briny tears would steal their way down her trembling cheek, often such tears, I believe as Mary shed when she washed the feet of Jesus! Such tears, as we mortal can command, or sustain; flowing freely from a contrite heart; saying, and at the same time feeling that I love Jesus; and Jesus loves me, sinner as I am. Such, I have no doubt, was Sister Collins' feelings. I suppose it would be difficult to determine the desease that terminated her existence. During her life she was blessed with reasonable health until a few years before her death, her mind became deranged and about two years hence, she fell out at the door and dislocated her knee, so with all, she was for a long time bedridden, with debility and a distracted mind, her sufferings were indescribable which caused much anxiety and constant uneasiness in the mind of her husband and family and more especially because they could do nothing for her. She lost all knowledge of every member of her family for sometime before her death. NOTE - the last few sentences of her obituary are not legible in the copy that I have. NOTE: Prosperity Church Cemetery - Taylor County Collins, Enoch F. September 21, 1814 - 1899 (husband of Rebecca) (father of Mary A. Collins Johnson buried beside them) Collins, Rebecca 1810 - 1889 Obit Tuesday, April 2, 1889 issue of the Butler Herald. (wife of Enoch F. Collins) (married in Houston Co Bethel Primitive Baptist Church 1834 or 1835) Johnson, Mary A. 5 Aug 1842—18 Jul 1908 (daughter of Enoch F and Rebecca Collins) (wife of William G. 3. I have recently acquired microfilmed copies of all of the CSA pension applications that were filed in Schley Co. Some of them are quite lengthy and take a great deal of time to transcribe. I have just completed one such application that is truly amazing in it's detail and speaks volumes of the times these veterans endured in their last years. The pension application of Wm. Abner Banks, I found fascinating. It can be viewed at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/schley/military/civilwar/pensions/banks.txt I will be sending applications to the Schley mailing list when they are not too lengthy and they can always be viewed in the Schley Military Archives as they are posted. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/schley/military.html Since there is such a close connection to Marion and Sumter counties, many of you Marion/Sumter county researchers may find something helpful in these applications as well. 1. [GAMARION] Schley County News #18
    2. Harris Hill
    3. The Schley County News Thursday, May 11, 1893 No. 18 Judge Battle has made some improvements which add very much to the beauty and comfort of his residence on Broad Street. Judge Battle was taken ill Saturday and has since been confined to his bed. His many friends hope for him a speedy recovery. At the recent meeting of the W.C.T.U., held in Macon, Mrs. C.H. Smith was elected fraternal delegate from Georgia to the National Convention to be in Kansas City. Dr. Sears, superintendant of the Baptist Sunday school, desires a large attendance on next Sunday afternoon. Final arrangements for the picnic will be made. Let all come out. The building of another beautiful home to ornamente our town will begin shortly. The plans have been drawn, lumber ordered and the carpenters will soon be set to work. Next Sunday will be children's day at the Methodist church. The pastor will preach a special sermon for the little folks and earnestly desires to have every child in town present with their parent and friends. The sermon at night will be for the young people. Mr. P.E. Taylor has fitted up a law office on Oglethorpe street where he can attend the wants of his clients. Mr. Taylor is a young man of indomitable energy and perserverance with no such word as fail in his vocanulary and he is bound to succeed in his chosen avocation. We wish him abundant prosperity. Mr. Will Wright who has been spending sevral days in Ellaville with his grandparents left yesterday afternoon to accept an important position with the King Hardware Co., of Atlanta. Mr. Wright has been for several years with Sheffield & Co.and he thoroughly understands the hardware business. He will be on the road the greater part of the time and the interest of his house is sure to be well looked after. FRUIT CULTURE TO TAKE THE PLACE OF COTTON Our farmers have been slow to take hold of any new enterprise. They understood how to grow and market cotton, hence they have depended on it entirely as a money crop. But the diasters that have befallen this product of the south and the low prices that have prevailed for years has forced the farmers to turn their attention to something more profitable. The Garden Valley Fruit Co. has opened the way to a new industry that is sure to be of incalcuble good to this section. Many who had no faith in the enterprise when it started are now most enthusiastic over the prospect. Quite a number have put in orders for fruit trees to be delivered this Fall and a large area will be planted. When the coming factory is in operation, the cultivation of vegtables will form a very important part and give employment to numbers of hands. This will of course bring new families in our midst and they will need houses to live in and it is easy to be seen that Ellaville will continue to have a! healthful steady growth. Mrs. C.H. Smith, of Ellaville, one of the most earnest, zealous and efective temperance workers in Georgia, was in Oglethorpe Sunday in the interest of temperance. Stopping over Saturday p.m. on her return from the Temperance Convention in Macon, Mrs. Smith remained with us until Monday p.m. and formed the nucleus for a Women's Christian Temperance Union in Oglethorpe. At the close of her remarks at the Methodist church Sunday night, many went up and signed the pledge and enrolled their names on the list of members.---Citizen. Mr. Roe Edwards was in town Monday. Mr. Emmet Bolton, of Americus, spent Sunday in Ellaville. Miss Dora Childers spent Sunday with friends in town. Mr. and Mrs. C.R. McCrory visited Oglethorpe Friday. Dr. and Mrs. Henry McKellar visited relatives in town this week. The Misses Tison visited Miss Mary Williamson Sunday. Mrs. Charlie Payne visited her sister, Mrs. H.T. Arrington, this week. Mr. Olin Dixon came up from Americus Sunday and spent the day with home folks. Misses Nell Davis and Nan Dodson returned to Americus today after a most delightful visit in Ellaville. Miss Emmie Baldwin returned home from Columbus Sunday accompanied by her sister Mrs. Chipley. Mr. A.A. Arrington attended preaching at Andrew Chapel Sunday and drove back by LaCrosse as the nearest way home. Mr. Dobbs, a traveling man from Atlanta spent Sunday at the Peacock House. He is an earnest Sunday school worker and made interesting talks at the Methodist and Baptisit churches. The city council of Americus has declared the street rail road which has ceased to be operated, a nuisance and have ordered the owners to remove the same within thirty days. If they refuse the city will have the work done at once. Messrs. Olin Dixon and W.L. Childers, old Schley county boys, have purchased the entire stock of Mr. George Stapleton and will continue the business at the same stand under the firm name of Dixon and Childers. A crate of eggs was shipped from Columbus to Americus yesterday by the justly celebrated accomodation train of the B.V.& E. road. Such was the speed of this remarkable train that several of the eggs actually hatched before the flyer arrived here.---Times Recorder. The school at Glen Holly closed last Friday and Miss Charlie Trammell left on Saturday for her home in Harris County. The patrons of that school were generally well pleased with her. Miss Trammell is an experienced educator and the patrons of Glen Holly will be very fortunate if they can secure her service for another year. There is a great deal of sickness in the community now, Mrs. Hartie Payne and Miss Nettie Bridges have been very sick for the last week, but are improving slowly. end # 18.
