Stokes, Buena Vista Mr. J.G. Stokes, of this city, was summoned Thursday to Buena Vista to attend the burial service of his brother, Mr. R.H. Stokes, who was widely known and highly esteemed in Taylor County. The friends of Mr. Stokes were shocked and very much grieved upon learning of his death. The facts concerning his short illness and death is told in the following account appearing in the Marion County Patriot Friday: “Early Wednesday morning a telephone message announced that Mr. R.H. Stokes was seriously sick with something like cramp colic and requested his son to bring a physician as soon as possible. The family of Mr. Stokes wanted to be with him in his sickness and taking Dr. Drane with them in an automobile hurried to the turpentine still in the northwest part of the county, but when they arrived there they found him dead.” “The afternoon before he was talking over the telephone to his wife and seemed to be well, but after that it appears he took something like colic and a Negro man waited on him, giving him colic medicine. About midnight he became easy and dismissed the Negro who went to his cabin to rest. In the morning the Negro came to see about him and found him unconscious. The Negro then jumped on a horse and ran over to Judge Noell’s about a mile distant for help, but before Mr. Noell arrived he had expired.” This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.0 Kb

    3. I thought we should try to find out more about the National Historic places listed for Marion County. If anyone has some ideas about how to do this, please do help us out!! This is the one that Norma Wilkinson has been trying to get a photo of. (She's going to share more about the families.... but now I'm curious about who really put this on the National Registry and more about the history. I believe that the Registry would have a history -- does anyone know??) When I looked for Friendship on the map... I noticed that there was one for Sumter County (not too far from the Marion Co border). Could this be the location --- or perhaps it is IN Marion, but with a post office for Sumter?? (don't know if that is likely though) ===== Since this one was added in 1984 (that's so recent, you'd think we could find out more about it).... I'm guessing that Champion is the first owner -- 1825 -- if this is correct this was even before the 1827 land lottery... 1825-1849, 1850-1874, 1875-1899 (these are the DATES listed) Champion-McGarrah Plantation (added 1984 - Building - #84001156) Also known as Merritt Farm Off GA 30, Friendship Historic Significance: Event, Architecture/Engineering Architectural Style: Greek Revival Area of Significance: Agriculture, Architecture Period of Significance: 1825-1849, 1850-1874, 1875-1899 Owner: Private Historic Function: Agriculture/Subsistence, Domestic Historic Sub-function: Agricultural Outbuildings, Secondary Structure, Single Dwelling Current Function: Agriculture/Subsistence, Domestic Current Sub-function: Single Dwelling

    3. Friends, I have just received my copy of "A History of Marion County, Georgia, Motherland of Many" by Rena S. Cobb and am astonished at all the information in it. It is about the size of a Sears-Roebuck catalog with index of names including first names, a lot of quality pictures, but most important to me all the names from so many sources. Some of my folks did not stay in the county many years but others did and it is such a thrill finding information on them. As TV says, "Order Now." Contact me and I'll give your ordering information: [email protected] Norma Ennis Wilkinson

    2. Harris Hill
    3. Since we are getting into the 1850's soon, I send this membership list, both males and females. As you can see, it is undated but thought to be close to 1850. As regards the last set of minutes, the question of sporting got a very large response. The beliefs ranged from something akin to putting on airs to fornication, with much gambling in between. I haven't any idea of the correct definition in this context but had a hunch that it might have involved gambling. Thank all of you who endeavored to seek out the answer. Ernie Jones even consulted a 1913 Webster's Dictionary. Webster felt it was gambling. Who knows. Harris begin Membership List undated, but appears on the page after the 1850 List Males Names 1 C.L.
