The following was sent me by Linda Snow Davis. As there were both Schley and Marion men in the 17th Ga., I was asked to pass this information along to the lists in the event there might be some who wished to attend. Add'l information and directions can be obtained from Linda Snow Davis at the number listed below. Harris Confederate Memorial Service To Honor James B. Broxton, Cuthbert, Randolph Co., Georgia Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery Invitation Confederate Memorial Service There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. in Cuthbert, Randolph Co., Ga. to place a CSA marker on the grave of Private James B. Broxton, who served in Co. K, 17th Ga. Infantry. This Company enlisted out of Stewart and Webster Counties. Other counties that enlisted men in this Regiment were Decauter, Doughtery, Harris, Miller, Mitchell, Muscogee, Schley and Terrell. The unit served with Gen. Henry Lewis Benning under the command of Gen. James Longstreet from 1861 to 1865. Benning's Brigade was engaged in almost all of the major battles in the Eastern theater of the War, including Devil's Den at Gettysburg. A lifelong member of Trinity Methodist Church, Rubye Lewis has made this ceremony possible. Through her diligent research she has located the 87 year old granddaughter of Mr. Broxton. Due to her frail condition, Mrs. Berta Broxton Hobbs will not be able to attend. The surviving great grand children of Mr. Broxton are: Hal Hobbs, Leesburg, Ga., Roger Hobbs, Tifton, Ga., Mike Hobbs, Tifton, Ga., Denise Powell, Orlando, Fl., Ed Creamer, Albany, Ga., Ronnie Creamer, Albany, Ga., Betty Piercy, Albany, Ga., all of which plan to attend the ceremony. The family plans to video the service to play back to Ms. Berta Broxton Hobbs, who is very excited about this memorial to her grandfather. Also in attendance will be Linda Snow Davis, who is writing a Regimental History on the 17th Georgia Infantry Regiment. The service will be held at the Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery and will be sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stewart-Webster Camp # 1605. A wreath will be place on Mr. Broxton's gravesite and the guest speaker will be Mrs. Rena Cobb of the Mary Brantley Chapter # 446 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A salute will be fired by re-enactors of the 2nd Ga. Infantry, Stewart Greys, and the 17th Ga. Infantry Co. K, Webster Confederate Guards. For more information call Linda Snow Davis, 770-946-9848.

Mary Nicholson, a schoolteacher, brought action against James S. Dillard for $400 special damage and $5,000 general, because he made certain statements impugning her character. As a consequence she lost her school and was kept from earning a living by teaching in the community. Dillards general and special demurrers were sustained in the lower court but the Supreme Court reversed this action and held that his language was calculated to injure her in her profession. Hello to All, Looking for information on Kenney Simmon born before 1860 married Janie Anthony born before 1860. Had a child Mattie Lou Simmon born 1864 and died 1950. Thank you for all your help, Brenda
As always when The Taylor Tracer arrives, I am very impressed with all the variety and hard work that has gone into each issue. (Feel free to pass this along to any list you feel might be interested.) It started out with World War II and the touching story of Thomas Oliver Gassett and even the telegram which his mother received notifying her if his death. (As an aside, I learned that he was buried in the same cemetery as the John A. Cox. John Adams answered my question. Horeb Primitive Baptist Cemetery is also known as Shiloh and even Daviston.) A fascinating story of Uncle Ira, the stagecoach Drive (The Atlanta Constitution 1890) who lived in Macon, will delight you. Just reading about the personages who rode with him is a history lesson! He later wrote a column for the Macon Telegraph and we have a tiny bit of his work on-line. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/bibb/newspapers/jennings.txt The next article deals with Georgia Editor - J.D. Russ (Butler); W.T. Christopher (Montezuma Record) Very interesting article on the Baptist Faith and baptism and several photos of river baptisms There are 34 pages in all -- so this is just a taste of what this issue contains. We always encourage you to support the Society by joining... and keep encouraging your local libraries to subscribe as well. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gatchgs/index.htm See the index for all the old issues. Allen, Buena Vista, Meets Death In Auto Americus, Ga., Sept. 28 A fatal accident occurred tonight on the Ellaville highway, six miles from Americus, when a large touring car driven by William Allen, of Buena Vista, turned turtle without any apparent cause whatever. Mr. Allen was instantly killed and his wife seriously injured, being caught by the overturning automobile. Mr. Wadsworth, a traveling companion, and three of the Allen children aboard the card escaped serious injury. The party had spent the day in Americus and were speeding tonight to their home at Buena Vista, 30 miles distant, when the accident occurred. The scene of the casualty is upon one of the finest roads in Sumter County and the cause of the accident is a complete mystery, probably resulting from some defect in the auto. The body of Mr. Allen was carried later to his home in Buena Vista while injured members of the party were given attention. News of the accident telephoned here and to Ellaville brought many other automobiles to the scene of the fatal accident. The wrecked auto lay in a ditch beside the road.
