    1. [GAMARION] Proposed Legislation That May be of Interest to You as a Genealogist
    2. Harris Hill
    3. BlankThis was sent me by one of our list members who saw it on another list. It is potentially a troubling piece of legislation. Harris Proposed Legislation Would Wreak Havoc for Genealogists and others, of course! A new bill before the U.S. Congress proposes to overturn one of the most fundamental concepts of the present copyright laws. If passed, facts would become copyrighted for the first time in U.S. history. The Database and Collections of Information Misappropriation Act (HR3261) would make it a crime for anyone to copy and redistribute a substantial portion of data collected by commercial database companies and list publishers. At first, that sounds like a good idea. However, a bit more thought shows that nobody would be able to republish stock quotes, historical health data, sports scores, or voter lists. In fact, a lot of genealogy information could not be republished. If passed, Google and all the other search engines would be crippled, probably driven out of business. These are online databases that collect information, or facts, from other online sites so that the user can quickly find the information they seek. If Google and the others are not allowed to collect facts that are now copyrighted, how will they be able to index the Web for you? Art Brodsky, spokesman for public advocacy group Public Knowledge, says the bill would let anyone drop a fact into a database or a collection of materials and claim monopoly rights to it. This would contradict the core principle of the Copyright Act, which states that mere information and ideas cannot be protected works. Let's say that a commercial genealogy service such as Ancestry.com or OneGreatFamily.com publishes the fact that your great-great-grandparents had a child named John. Once that "fact" has been published by any commercial service, that original publisher would hold the copyright on the fact, and no one else would be allowed to publish it again. The Family History Library, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Genealogical Publishing Company, and others would be prohibited from publishing that information again in any of their online or printed works. In fact, private individuals would similarly be barred from publishing the information in their own derivative works. If a commercial site publishes a fact about your ancestors, you would not be able to place that fact on your own Web site or in any book or report that you give to others. The language in this proposed legislation contradicts the core principle of the present copyright acts, which state that mere information and ideas cannot be protected works. You can read more about this proposed legislation in Wired News at http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,62500,00.html

    3. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/marion/cemeteries/moorechapel.txt Karen was mentioning Moore's Chapel, which made me curious. If anyone can help identify the people buried here, like who they were married to or the son of, etc. I'd like to add it. Also I'm very interested in creating history of churches. Does anyone know anything about the date Moore's Chapel was started? Is it still an active church today. Moore,M. Seaborn 4/29/1819- 12/13/1893 This seems to be the oldest burial....so maybe he was the one that the church was named after? Anybody research the Moore name? Roberts Charged With Embezzlement of $11,000 from Buena Vista Bank Buena Vista, Ga., Sept. 19 – Directors of the Buena Vista Loan and Savings Bank have offered a reward of $250 for the arrest and delivery to the sheriff of Marion County of J.W. Roberts, formerly president of the bank, who disappeared, charged with embezzlement of $11,000 of the institution’s funds. Official notice of the reward was made here today and caused considerable consternation, as the significance of the ex-president’s disappearance had not been generally known. While nothing definite has been learned of Roberts’ whereabouts, the report gained credence today that he had fled to Bermuda. The proclamation of reward carries the following description of Roberts: “Age, about 56, very deaf, uses trumpet; height about 5 feet 10 inches, thin gray hair; weight about 165 pounds, blue eyes, wears glasses, red complexion, clean shaven when last seen three weeks ago, rather retiring in manner, bottom front tooth out, walks with short steps and soft or light tread, talks low.” This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.7 Kb

The Saturday re-enactment is based on historical accounts of an Indian assault on the village of Roanoke in Stewart County --located on the Chattahoochee River only a few miles west of Westville. Sunday's skirmish portrays the Battle of Shephard's plantation, at which the 45th Regimen of the Georgia militia left their home in Gwinnett County, GA to defend local settlers against Indian raids. Due to years of broken treaties and a new federal policy requiring the Indians to leave their native homes, Creek Indian tribes retaliated against settlers in 1836. Re-enactors in period clothing will portray soldiers assigned to protect local Westville citizens from Creek Indians as they attack the village. Horses, gun fighting, hand-to-hand combat and "wounded" people all add to the life-like skirmish. The event will give spectators a first hand, hair-raising account of what an Indian attack might have looked and felt like during that period of history.

    3. I would love to know more about the Marion Sketch Book. As for Alexander Goodson, it could have been this gentleman who did not survive the Civil War or his father or his son who was also Alexander Goodson. Perhaps Ms. Svoren could elaborate. I, for one would be interested in knowing which Alexander Goodson she speaks of. From research I have done on the members of Company G, 5th Ga.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaschley/g5thbur.htm Goodson, Alexander Asbury- private May 11, 1861. Died of disease July 9, 1863. Found on 1860 Schley census, HH 199, age 22, s/o Alexander & Hannah. Married Martha Snipes Jan 24 1861. Mentioned in the letters of Charles Womack found in the Schley Archives, June 2, 1861. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaschley/g5th.htm Also this from the same roster: Drew, Shadrack W(all)-3d Sergeant May 11, 1861. Surrendered Greensboro, N. C. April 26, 1865. Married Mattie Goodson (sister of Alexander Asbury Goodson on roster below), Schley Co., Oct. 14, 1864. Found on 1860 Schley census, grocer, age 27. Father, Thomas Drew. Schley marriage records indicate a second marriage for Mattie Goodson to Elijah Britt Barrow 24 Oct. 1871. They had two children. It is my belief that Shadrack Drew died prior to 24 Oct 1871. I would very much like to know what happened to Shadrack Wall Drew. 3. I thought the question raised earlier about what was happening in Marion County during the Civil War was a very good one. Did these "raiders" come through any part of Marion County..... does anyone know of any specific stories? I'm hoping someone can add to what little bit of info that I have: "Wilson's Raid A branch of Sherman's army was a group of cavalrymen known as Wilson's Raiders. After capturing Columbus the next target was Macon which surrendered without a fight because news just arrived of Lee's surrender. The next main objective was to intercept Jefferson Davis who along with other government officials were headed south through North Carolina. Part of the force hit Reynolds and then headed south down the river road raiding supplies as they went. (See stories by Howards and Carsons) They camped several days at the ferry crossings on the Flint River in Macon Co. which is evidence they were trying to intercept the Davis party. Wilson's mend did capture Davis southeast of Macon Co near the Ocmulgee River.
