    3. Marion-Chattahoochee County GaArchives News.....Brief sketch of life as a soldier in the Confederate army - written by W.H. Dear Mr. Editor – If you will allow me space in your columns I will give you a brief sketch of life as a soldier in the Confederate army, under General Lee, Longstreet and Hood and Brigade Commander H.L. Benning, better known as Old Rock. There were many things impressed on the mind, but none more vivid than one thing that occurred one Sunday evening in Richmond. I entered a Sabbath schoolroom in which 22 little girls formed a class conducted by a lady. After recitation she had them sing, “I want to be an Angel.” Never will I forget those sweet voices. We soon went into active service and I will mention a few of the important places of battle – Yorktown, Seven Pines, Oak Swamp, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg and Fredricksburg. In 1863 we were transferred to the western army and engaged in the Chickamauga fight. The scenes of battle cannot be described. I was then in the 17th Ga. regiment, but was later transferred in the western army and was in the campaign from Dalton, Ga. to Kennesaw Mountain. A soldier’s life is not a pleasant one at all times. When some people miss one meal they complain; I have marched 3 days and lived on half grown apples and green collards. I have seen men wounded in all forms; I was hit but twice, which I caught on my arm and pocketed. The next was in my arm just 43 years ago this morning June 29th, and I saw my lifeblood flowing in a half inch stream. Then I thought my time was at hand, but I am still here fighting life’s battles with one hand. It has been a hard fight, but in the darkest hour some friend would come to my rescue. I have had some several conflicts with the world, the flesh and the devil, but it will not last much longer. I shall soon ground the arms of rebellion; then I hope to sing with the poet, “The portals of glory are opening for me; then, oh let me anchor beyond the dark sea and wear a victor’s crown.” W.H. The number was unsealed and made public Tuesday, when the farmers who had brought cotton to the Alliance Warehouse had come to town, anxious to know if they held the lucky number and would get the money. The number was 788. Burton is a sober, hardworking man, and for some weeks has been sick and needed the money. Mr. James Wilson failed to qualify and Dr. T.J. Brooks was appointed to fill the vacancy. Rev. M. Hair was elected president of the board, which place he filled for more than sixteen years. Three of the above gentlemen are still living, Messrs. M. Hair, John R. Short and James Wilson. The first teachers granted license were Prof. C.E. Grubles and Miss Nannie Stephens. In 1873 there were fifteen schools for the whites and three for the Negroes. Six hundred and thirty two children white children and three hundred and nine negro children attended school that year. The amount of school funds received from all sources that year was $2,738.40. At that time the length of the school term was three months and the teachers were paid at the end of the year. There are now twenty-four for the white and fourteen for the colored, not including the town schools. Last year 992 white children and 997 negro children attended the schools. We received from the state $7,840.13. Our teachers were paid promptly at the end of each month, and most of the schools were taught for seven months. Mr. Kinnard was in the employ of the National Paper Company, and was on his way home, walking over the crossing in the W. & A. yards, when he was struck by a passing train, and died several hours later. The Marion County Patriot, No. 49 Friday, December 20, 1907 Page Two Doyle The family of Mr. William Kinard were painfully shocked by the news of the untimely death, by accident, of his son, Barney Kinard, in Atlanta last Friday night. The entire Dranesville community and a host of friends in every part of the county deeply sympathize with them in their bereavement. Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: The spelling of the last name in the articles appears as both Kinard and Kinnard. 3. Marion County GaArchives News.....Buena Vista's Society, Business Activities and The Marion County Bar - 1907 June 7, 1907 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00010.html#0002476 March 17, 2005, 7:25 pm The Marion County Patriot June 7, 1907 The Marion County Patriot, No. 21 Friday, June 7, 1907 Page One History of Buena Vista, Beautiful View Society Buena Vista with its educational advantages, moral influences and its beautiful homes stands far toward the front in its social attainments. Its women are refined, vivacious and know just how to entertain. Its men are typical southern gentlemen. Socially there people have no peers anywhere. All that culture, vivaciousness, good form, neat dressing and beauty can give, society has the full benefit of here and these people are trained from childhood in social ethics. Buena Vista has more handsome, lovely women than can be found in any other town of its size in the United States. The Marion County Bar From the organization of Marion County in 1827 there have been strong members of the Marion County bar. But the county bar has been very strong at Buena Vista ever since Buena Vista has been the county site in 1845. Among its members have been eminent lawyers who have made the Marion county bar famous at home and abroad. Among the prominent lawyers in the past who have practiced at this bar were Judge Mark Blandford, Col. Sam Crawford and Col. Thad Oliver. In recent years we have Major E.W. Miller, Judge W.B. Butt, Hon. Morgan McMichael and Judge Edgar M. Butt. The Marion county bar of today will compare favorably with any bar in the state for erudition of the law, legal knowledge and niceties of its practice. The local members of the bar who reside in Buena Vista are Judge W.D. Crawford, Hon. Geo. P. Munro, Judge Joe J. Dunham, Col. W.B. Short, Col. T.B. Rainey and Judge John C. Butt. These attorneys are all prominent men, every one having held high positions of trust and honor. The Marion county bar has supplied one Justice of the Supreme Court of the State – Judge Mark Blandford; one Solicitor General of the Chattahoochee Circuit – Col. Thad Oliver, and two Judges of the Superior Court of the Chattahoochee Circuit – Judges Edgar M. Butt and W.B. Butt. Buena Vista’s Business Activities Buena Vista is one of the best business points in south-west Georgia. It is the storage point and market for the immense crops of cotton grown in Marion County and in parts of the surrounding counties, and its four warehouses and hosts of cotton buyers do an immense business every year. It is a great mule market point, and carload after carload of fine mules are shipped from Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and other points and sold here every season. Buena Vista’s retail mercantile business is immense. More goods are shipped here from New York, Chicago, Baltimore and other great wholesale market centers and sold by our merchants, than is shipped to any other place of its size in the state of Georgia. Nearly every store in town is a brick building, modern, up-to-date and commodious. Everything that necessity calls for or refined tastes desires may be found in Buena Vista. Farm supplies, buggies, wagons, household goods, furniture, hardware, groceries, novelties, books, men’s furnishing goods, ladies’ furnishing goods, general merchandise – in fact everything from a shoe string to the finest fabric. Farmers come here to trade because their wants can always be supplied and the prices are as low as can be quoted in larger cities. Its merchants are trained, thorough businessmen, pleasant, accommodating and refined. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- We will now turn the search light of this historic review of our beautiful Buena Vista on direct business and personal matters. Those businesses which have come to the front – banks, warehouses, factories, mercantile houses which are centers of trade, etc., successful and leading men, such as officials, professional men, mechanics, merchants and farmers, together with the sublime scenery, beautiful homes and lovely women will each be noticed separately and each “write up” will be illustrated with fine half-tone engravings. P.S. We have been delayed in getting photographs of persons and places for this work that we hope to overcome in a few days. The Methodist Church is a station, the Missionary Baptist Church has preaching every two weeks and the Primitive Baptist Church has preaching every first Sunday and Saturday before. Sunday Schools, with large attendance, are held every Sunday in the Methodist and Missionary Baptist Churches. W.C.T.U. Local Not the least in its moralizing influence is the local organization of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, whose recent efforts have resulted in driving the legal sale of intoxicating liquors and the Dispensary, not only from Buena Vista, but from Marion County, and placing it among the “dry counties” of Georgia. The W.C.T.U. local was organized by Mrs. Nell G. Burges, of Missouri, on Thursday evening, Nov. 2nd, 1905, with the following officers: Mrs. Margaret Hirshburg, President Mrs. Ben T. Reese, Vice President Mrs. J.W. Roberts, Secretary Mrs. J.D. Hart, Treasurer Mrs. Clifford Lowe, Cor. Secretary There were only a few other charter members. The first meeting of this little band of noble women was at the home of Mrs. Hirshburg. Few in numbers, and still fewer active workers, they undertook a task that appeared beyond their power to accomplish, but with a determination born of courage, and on the 8th of Nov. 1906, the fathers, brothers and sons of the worthy citizenship of Marion County rallied to the polls to win their fight in a battle of ballots. Nor did those noble women shirk duty on this day of battle. They met at the Baptist church early on the morning of the election, Mrs. Margaret Hirshburg, Mrs. J.W. Roberts, Mrs. C.H. Smith, Mrs. Clifford Lowe, Mrs. J.D. Hart, Mrs. Emma Mathews, Mrs. Short, Mrs. C.G. Wiggins and Mrs. Sam Wilson; and from the church they came to the polls, where they remained until the polls closed without showing any signs of fatigue or less interest in their work the entire day, not even going to dinner. Their presence and their influence accomplished much good and showed the courage there few true women had in the great work in which they were engaged, and when the victory was announced they gave praise to God that their labor was not in vain. The County had gone “dry” by one hundred and three votes. Nor would we forget to notice the hard, untiring work of those men who come to the front in this engagement and made the victory possible. Messrs. W.M. Williams, Wilbert J. Parker and James P. Hogg, and Revs. J.M. Foster and R.B. Taylor might be mentioned at this place, while good men were at every precinct doing what they could. The men and women of Buena Vista and in every part of Marion county, are as pure, true, honest, law-abiding citizens as can be found anywhere. The Missionary Baptist Church The Missionary Baptist Church edifice is a neat building, elegantly furnished, and is located in the central part of our little city, and on the same lot with the beautiful pastorium, now occupied by the pastor, Rev. Hugh F. Oliver, who has recently been called to this field of labor, and comes with fine recommendations as a pastor and worker. The records of this Church were burned a few months ago, making an accurate, detailed history hard to get. Among its pastors in the past are old brother Cawley, who served the Church for many years; Rev. A.J. Moncrief, pastor for a number of years; then Rev. J.D. Norris; Rev. N.R. Sanford for three years; followed by Rev. Howard Carpenter; then Rev. R.B. Taylor for six years, succeeded by the present pastor. The Deacons of the Church are J.O. Smith, Capt. J.A. Shephard, William Nutt and Dr. John Walton. The Methodist Church South The Methodist Church South here is the outgrowth of the old Uchee Methodist Church which was organized in the forties, on Uchee creek, two miles south of Buena Vista. The original membership embraced the names of Rev. D.W. Burkhalter, Bland Wallis, William Wells, Benjamin Blanton and Seaborn Martin. In a few years it was moved to Buena Vista, to the site of the present location of the church building, where Rev. D.W. Burkhalter gave five acres of land. The congregation worshiped in a hewed log church until 1854, when it was moved about half a mile and used as a school house, and the present building was begun, but was not completed until 1858. Buena Vista and Tazewell were in one work for some time, then the work consisted of Buena Vista, Brantley and Shady Grove, but at the last session of the Conference Buena Vista was made a station, with Rev. J.J. Ansley pastor. Rev. Ansley and family now occupy the parsonage. He and his wife are useful, strong workers and their influences for good is being felt in our county. Its pastors for the past thirty years were, J.P. Wardlow, 1877, 78 and 79; L.D. Clements, 1880 and 81; R.L. Wiggins, 1882; J.M. Western, 1883; T.K. Lunard, 1884; J.D. Maulding, 1885; B. Anthony, 1886; B.L. Sentel, 1887 and 88; C.H. Brunch, 1889; J.W. Austin, 1890 and 91; G.C. Clark, 1892; E.J. Burch, 1893; D.H. Riley, 1894 and 95; H.C. Brutan, 1896 and 97; G.L. Johnson, 1898 and 99; R.L. Wiggins, 1900 and 1901; W.E. Arnold, 1902 and 1903; W.D. McGregor, 1904 and 1905; J.M. Foster, 1906 and J.J. Ansley, 1907. Buena Vista’s Educational Advantages Far Above the Average Buena Vista is far above the average in its educational advantages. Beside public money that comes from the State, the city corporation spends about four thousand ($4,000.00) a year to maintain a graded school system in connection with high school work that is second to none in the State of Georgia, and gives a thorough preparation for entering into any college in the State. We are speaking of the white school advantages. The colored school here has an attendance enrollment of nearly three hundred pupils, a good corps of competent teachers and occupies a commodious, two story school building in the south-east part, just at the edge of town, with large play grounds. The Institute Building But this is the home of the Hoke Smith Institute. Situated in the north part of town, a handsome, commodious, two-story structure of modern school architecture. On the first floor are recitation rooms, hat and cloakrooms, superintendent’s office and school library. On the second floor are the music and kindergarten departments and an auditorium with a seating capacity of five hundred people. Design of the Institution The design of the school is not only to meet the needs of those preparing for college entrance, but to provide for a broader culture and development than other like schools, and an aim that bespeaks more than the mere preparation for college courses. The High School Work The regular high school courses of study offered here requires four years to complete, and are sufficiently broad to prepare for the successful performance of the duties of life. The aim of the management of Hoke Smith Institute is to have an institution which shall not only be above the average in giving mental culture, but which shall deserve to rank “first class” in everything that constitutes true worth. Here under a corps of competent teachers and trained educators, boys and girls are prepared for the great responsibilities, as well as the great opportunities of American life. They recognize that real education is the unfolding of the whole nature towards its highest possibilities, and they purpose for this school to provide the proper environment for this development. The geographical position of Buena Vista renders the climate pleasant, insures healthfulness, makes the school easy of access reduces cost and thus gives to Hoke Smith Institute marked advantages over many fine schools. We did not get our notes about the Primitive Baptist Church ready for this issue. It will appear later. Pugh was riding a mule, and meeting the boy, who had been hunting, stopped and talked with him. The gun was accidentally discharged, and the boy thought the mule had thrown Pugh when he fell, and catching the mule he brought it back and asked Pugh if he was hurt, but receiving no answer went to Pugh and taking hold of him found he was dead. The boy became so frightened at finding himself with a dead man that he ran away. Drs. Weaver and McMichael were called but arrived too late to save him. The Marion County Patriot, No. 51 Friday, January 3, 1908 Page Ten A Tribute of Respect Of the many noble traits of character of Reese Maulden Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Martin, who died at Curran in this county, Dec. 12, age 22 years and 6 months, much could be said. His friends and admirers were numbered by his acquaintances with the young and old. As his teacher we had the best of opportunity to study his exceptional qualities of head and heart. In his early teens we knew him in that close relationship. Always pleasant with his schoolmates, ever respectful and obedient to those whose duty it was to direct his footsteps in the ways of right and “teach the young idea how to shoot.” During study hours and at play the same manly deportment marked “the even tenor of his way.” And, while we bow to the will of Him who doeth all things well, “we weep that one so lovely should have a life so brief.” It is said that death loves a shining mark. How beautifully was this exemplified in the passing of this harmless young man. Near where we first knew him in his boyhood’s sunny days, his remains were laid in Brantley cemetery, that cold December day “when the forest casts its leaf.” And though No marble marks his couch of lowly sleep, Living statutes there are seen to weep; Affliction’s semblances bends not o’er his tomb, Affliction’s self deplores his youthful doom.
