Clements plantation six miles west from Buena Vista, was shot and killed at a church supper Saturday night by his cousin, John Thomas King, who lives on the Miller plantation which adjoins that of Mr. Clements, and only about three-fourths of a mile from the man he killed. Both men were shot, the dead man receiving two bullets from a 38, one in the mouth and one in the bowels from which he died in a few minutes, the other receiving one bullet in the bowels. The St. Paul Church supper was not held at the church but in an empty house between the residences of the two men, and the trouble arose over a door fee of ten cents. These men were not only cousins, but were close friends up to that time and the quarrel and shooting may be said to be the result of bad whiskey, as we are informed that about six gallons had been taken to the place. On Sunday morning Sheriff Mires and Jailer Warren Belk went to the scene of trouble where they found evidence that would answer in place of an inquest. Dr. J.A. Weaver was called to attend John Thomas King, who was thought to be mortally wounded. Johnson, daughter of Rev. LeRoy Hirshburg and wife, to Dr. W.A. Drane on June 17th, was given out last Sunday. The Marion County Patriot, No. 24 Friday, June 19, 1908 Page One Johnson Drane A quiet home wedding took place at the beautiful home of Rev. LeRoy Hirshburg and wife on Wednesday, June 17th. The contracting parties were Mrs. Ada May Johnson, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Hirshburg, and Dr. W.A. Drane. The home was beautifully decorated with flowers and foliage and a particular lovely feature was the veranda on which the ceremony was to have taken place at 8 oclock. The lawn in front of the home was a scene of beauty also. A storm coming up about 7 oclock disarranged the whole plan and continued with much severity until between 9 and 10 oclock when it broke away and the guests began to arrive. The ceremony was performed by Rev. LeRoy Hirshburg, the father of the bride, who with Mrs. Hirshburg stood in the parlor back from the door surrounded by the relatives, waiting the coming of the happy couple while Miss Ruth Smith played the wedding march. The bride is a beautiful attractive woman, and this night looked her best decked in a snowy gown of taffeta, by the side of the handsome bridegroom. Dr. Drane is a highly estimable gentleman and is one of the leading physicians and surgeons of Marion County, who has an extensive practice and is loved by all who know him. After the ceremony and congratulations, ice cream, cake and fruits were served, and it was a late hour when the guests retired. The happy couple have the best wishes of everyone. T.B. Rainey. The ceremony will take place in the Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 19th. The Marion County Patriot, No. 20 Friday, May 22, 1908 Page One Hirshburg Rainey One of the most beautiful church weddings ever witnessed in Buena Vista was the marriage which took place at the Baptist Church on the morning of the 19th of May, at 10 oclock. It was a dream of beauty everywhere a feast for the eye was seen, where loving hands and artistic skill had made a fairy palace of the Home Beautiful. Around the pulpit a wreath of vines and roses, in the background tall palms, ferns, hydrangeas and other exotic plants. Recessed within this bower of beauty was the musician, Miss Lillian Reese. A path of green formed the middle aisle and down this Isle of Palms the couples wended their way to the entrancing strains of Mendelsohns Wedding March. At the end of the vista a crescent suspended, exquisite in its design, roses shining like stars amid the green canopy. Under this the bridal couple stood and plighted their troth as Miss Lillian Reese sweetly rendered Evening Star from Tanhouser. As the audience sat in silent contemplation of the bewitching beauty of the scene, upon the ear there falls the sweet voice of song, Would that my Love, sung by Misses Margaret Drane and Ruth Smith. As their voices cease, two little maids in white and pink, like fairies in this enchanted place, advance and tread their graceful way adown the emerald aisle, and the grand strains of the wedding march resound. The fairy nymphs, Linda Lowe and Mahala Butt, reach for the ribbons that hold the crescent canopy in shape at either side, as the ushers, Messrs. Marcus Lowe and Charley Edge, advance, followed by Mr. Charley Clements and Dr. Lightner, after them the handsome bridegroom, Col. T.B. Rainey, and his best man, Mr. Roswell M. Hair; then appears the beautiful bride, Miss Inez Hirshburg, gowned in a copenhagen silk traveling suit, meeting her maid of honor, Miss Florence Smith, who was lovely in a white lingerie suit, at the head of the vista of ferns, and leaning on her arm, advances meeting the bridegroom where her father, the Rev. LeRoy Hirshburg awaits. In a very few choice and impressive words they were made man and wife, and the twain became one flesh. The inspiring strains of Here Comes the Bride, begins and the couples pass out in like manner as they went, only the bride now leans upon the arm of her offianced husband, and the maid of honor with the best man. Miss Hirshburg, since making her home for the past two years in Buena Vista, has by her lovely Christian character endeared herself to this community as few young ladies ever have and Col. Rainey, beside being one of the prominent lawyers of the city, is our popular County School Commissioner; so the church was filled with an admiring crowd of their friends, and many congratulations and well wishes were tendered the happy couple as they linger in the vestibule awaiting their carriage to take the train for Savannah and Tybee. Long in the memories of the people will remain this beautiful marriage, and one can but wish them all the happiness and good that the lovely beginning is but the promise of fulfillment. The Marion County Patriot, No. 20 Friday, May 22, 1908 Page One Local News Mr. Wesley Hirshburg and wife, of Atlanta, Ga., have been the guests of his brother and family since Saturday. They came down to attend the wedding of Miss Inez and enjoyed a few days visit. The Marion County Patriot, No. 21 Friday, May 29, 1908 Page One Local News Col. and Mrs. T.B. Blue, Jr., Was Buried Saturday Mr. I.P. Blue, Jr., better known among his friends as Bice Blue, died Friday night and was buried Saturday afternoon. Mr. Blue was working in the Patriot office for Mr. Felder when we purchased the office now, nearly three years ago and continued to work for us for months. He was then large, strong and vigorous; no trace of the disease white plague or consumption, that has cut his life short, could then be seen. His prospects were long life and usefulness. His health began to fail and last year he went west, stopping for months in Texas, hoping the change and purity of air and climate would be beneficial. A few weeks ago his brother went out to Texas to bring him home as his health had declined until all hope of recovery had gone. He arrived here only two weeks ago, and everything was done for him by loving hands of relatives and friends. He was beloved by everyone and his death Friday night brought sorrow to all. His remains were laid to rest in Ramah cemetery. He was 23 years old, the son of Capt. I.P. Blue, and has many relatives in and around Buena Vista.
