I can not tell you how it feels to read this--- Of course I never knew Mr. Reese- I never knew OF HIM-until past years- He was the 1st cousin of my Great Grandfather William Nathaniel "Nat" Brown. Maybe 10 years ago- I viewed the grave of his parents Dr. Wm. J. Reese & Mary Elizabeth Brown- (He was there too-in the city cemetery, so I wrote the info down-though I knew not who he was-he knew he would be kin) and then maybe 5 years after that a family member at a family Reunion-had her Grandmother's two scapbooks-my great-grandmother- and pictures of same couple. But finding the children and something about them-was a bit harder..... This list has helped me make several of this family-and others (My McMichael's, my husband's Brown's etc.) into real human beings. Mary Elizabeth Brown's Grave proudly says who her Parents were- Wm. M. Brown & Amanda Gray---- And I am sure Emmett was just as proud of his--- Emmitt Brown Reese was born 1 Jan 1859=and you know when he died. Of the 12 children in his family- I know precious little- Emmitt Reese married Minnie McMichael-who is also my family- I don't know when-and they had several children-it says-but I don' t know WHO. (They fall in a census area we really don't have available in good form yet!) I know of one dtr. because Carla Miles takes the time to do all this-and I have FLESHED in other relatives with her many postings. (Thanks Carla) I found that twoof his brothers became Druggest in Thomasville William M. and Thadeus Berrion. I know-from this list-a brother went to Columbus-and I could put in a thimble-the rest of what I know! But after working over 20 years- YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE GETTING TO KNOW THEM- after something like this death notice. Boy if I could earn one of those before I die! Ansley, in the northwest part of town, was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon. Almost everything in the house was carried out but greatly damaged, but the scarcity of water prevented any work that would save the home, and many willing hands turned their attention to saving the buildings on either side. The wind was quite strong from the west which caused the sparks and heat to go in a direction where there were no near buildings to take fire. Mr. Ansley and family moved into the house with Mr. Joe Medlin for the present. The property was insured for $1600. Crawford. Strange as it may seem, the negro element of the town for a long time opposed local taxation for the maintenance of schools. After all preliminary arrangements had been made such as advertising for election, etc., Mayor Crawford arranged for election day, for the benefit of all who would vote for Public Schools, a barbecue. The necessary two thirds vote was easily gotten. In the spring of 1900 the City Council elected the following School Board: Judge Jas. M. Lowe Dr. J. Alvah Weaver Col. Wm. B. Short Robert E. Clements Bland S. Parker These gentlemen, with the exception of Dr. Weaver, have served continuously for six years. Under the supervision of these gentlemen, the present comfortable and commodious building was completed in the fall of 1900. The Board elected as teachers for the first year: J.H. Melson, Principal Miss Sarah Mathis, Assistant Miss Flossie Dunn, Assistant Miss Lucile Lowe, Music Director Hoke Smith Institute threw open her doors January 1901 to about seventy-five pupils. The first term was begun under flattering auspices. The old regime had been supplanted by new methods. The Board appointed Dr. Weaver as a committee of one to take all the abuse of disgruntled patrons and to supervise the heating of the building. He devoted little time to the former duty but much to the latter. Col. Short was appointed to formulate rules and regulations to govern the school; Mr. Parker, to supervise the colored school; and Judge Lowe and Mr. Clements to have charge of things in general. That all did well, the success of the school testifies. The following class was graduated in 1901: Miss Marilu Drane Miss Minnie Lee Jester Miss Sarah Bullock Miss Louise Wynn Mr. J.R. McMichael For the year 1902 the former teachers were reelected and Prof. W.E. Drane was added to the corps. This year was perhaps more prosperous than the former. A much larger class graduated, a number of whom entered the best colleges of the state. For the year 1903 Misses Lizzie Harvey and Ola Harrison were elected to fill the places of Misses Dunn and Mathis. The school increased in interest and numbers and in the summer graduated Miss Clayre Hollis, Messrs. Clifford Hale and George McCrary. In the fall of 1903, Prof. G.W. Driskell, a man of splendid attainments, succeeded Prof. Melson and held the fort very successfully for one year, graduating in 1904 a large class of bright girls and steady boys. In the fall of 1904 Prof. R.B. Collins was elected Superintendent, and for two years managed the modus operandi of the school in such an acceptable manner that all gave him up reluctantly last June. During all these years the school has accomplished a splendid work. Her graduates are filling important positions in the social, professional and business world. At present the school has an enrollment of about 160 pupils, a good library of 300 to 400 volumes, a faculty of six competent and consecrated teachers consisting of: Prof. J.H. Melson, Superintendent Prof. J.W. Barnhill, Principal Miss Hattie Whitaker, Assistant Miss Lula McMichael, Assistant Miss Lizzie Harvey, Assistant Miss Emmaceil Allums, Music Director File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/marion/newspapers/theorigi2036nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 4.1 Kb

List, I am trying to locate a Richard D. Cody who may have been born in Marion Co, GA in 1874/5. He appears on the 1910 and 1920 OK census in Coal Co as a physical. Family lore says he is related to either the JOHNSONs of Warren and Marion Counties or PERRYs of Meriwether, County, GA. He died before the 1930 census. The censuses reveal that his parents were both born in GA. I did locate a "R. D. Cody" on the Confederacy list of Marion Co area but haven't been able to locate that person anywhere else. Any ideas are appreciated. Linda Johnson Texas City, TX

Posey Once more the monster Death has entered our home and bore our gentle spirit of our beloved one, Mrs. Mary A. Posey, to its Heavenly rest. On Monday evening, July 13, at the closing of the day there ended a life of many years, full of earthly care and joy. Grandma was spared the suffering of a long spell of sickness, but during the short time she was sick, her suffering was intense, she being paralyzed entirely and unconscious from Saturday until her death Monday. Her aged companion will miss her more than anyone else, they having traveling through life hand in hand fifty years. While she was spared to be here the allotted time, we feel loathe to give up such a dear one, yet we are commanded to humbly submit to Gods will. It is impossible for anyone to try to speak of the many good deeds of this woman. Her life was full on usefulness, not only to her home circle, but to her neighbors. Always helping the weak and comforting the sorrowing, spreading sunshine and joy wherever she went. Oh, how her children whom she has raised to grown manhood and womanhood will miss the comforting words of mother to give them a better knowledge of this worlds ways and the grandchildren, who enjoyed nothing better than visiting grandma, will no longer have her to go to with their many cares and sorrows. We feel that Juniper has lost a good woman and her church one of its influential members. She was always ready to attend her meeting unless providentially hindered, and was not afraid to trust Jesus for help when cast down, willing to forgive and to ask forgiveness. On Wednesday her body was carried to the chapel, where a large number of relatives and friends met to pay her the last farewell, yet we were comforted by the loving tribute paid to her by her pastor, Rev. Booth, of Geneva. After the funeral her remains were carried to Columbus on the 2 oclock train and interred in Riverdale cemetery to await the Masters call. We would say to the husband, hope on. Ere long you will meet where there will be not parting. To her children, follow in the footsteps of your mother, and ask Gods help that you will be prepared to join her. And we ask Gods help to enable us to bear the burden that has been cast on us so suddenly, and we especially ask Him to be with grandpa, in this his hour of affliction and to bless the friends that so willingly helped us to comfort her in her last hours of sickness, is the prayer of her granddaughter. Jordan, of Ellaville on June 30th. The Marion County Patriot, No. 25 Friday, July 3, 1908 Page One Drane Jordan Of the many June weddings that have taken place in Buena Vista, among the loveliest was the one Tuesday morning, June 30th., wherein Miss Mary Lou Drane became the wife of Mr. Eugene Roney Jordan, of Ellaville. The day was one of those rare, perfect days that the poets write of, and the church seemed to breathe out from its exquisite decorations the very spirit of the occasion. Beautiful simplicity was the keynote of the decorations: The chancel was a bank of living green, formed of graduated masses of palms, ferns and potted plants; while above the chancel and caught to the sides of the building were graceful festoons of southern smilax. Almost concealed behind the palms was the piano, presided over by Miss Rebecca Mathis, and near her sat those who constituted the bridal chorus. At ten oclock the first note sounded and the choir sang with exceeding sweetness the bridal chorus from Lohengrin, Faithful and True. As the last soft tones died away, all at once the triumphant sound of the wedding march from Mendelsohn filled the air, and the attendants began to move in the following order: There were four ushers who marched two by two, first, Mr. Aldine Pickard and Dr. John Walton came up the center aisle, crossed at the chancel and took their places on either side, then Dr. Lightner and Mr. Adolphus Battle took their places in the same manner. The six bridesmaids, appropriately dressed in white linen coat suits and white hats, and carrying lovely bouquets of daisies, came in the following order: Miss Sara Bullock with Miss Lula McMichael, Miss Marguerite Drane with Miss Lynn Mathis, and Miss Imogene Sears with Miss Louise Oliver. These crossed at the railing, but instead of standing by the ushers, grouped themselves within the chancel, facing the audience. Next came the four ribbon bearers, Misses Minnie Drane Hornady, Mary Elza Sheppard, Elizabeth Drane and Martha Munro, prettily attired in pink and blue dresses. Two by two, they stretched the long white ribbons down each side of the aisle. Like twin fairy visions, Miss Pearl Hamner and Rebecca Moore appeared, and began to strew the path of the bride with pure white flowers. The music thrilled with sweet announcement, as the bride, Miss Drane advanced, leaning on the arm of her sister, Mrs. Cecil Burt, who wore a handsome linen suit and carried daisies. The bride near appeared more beautiful than then, in her stylish brown silk traveling suit and chic hat; all her appointments were perfect, and the carnations she carried were exquisite. The groom, Mr. Jordan, with his best man, Dr. J.R. Jordan, of Ellaville, met the bride at the altar, and in a few impressive words the ceremony was performed by Rev. Ansley. Again the strains of the march sounded and the party left the church in reverse order, the bride and groom driving immediately to the station. All Buena Vista regrets to give up one of its most cultured and lovely young ladies; and hosts of best wishes are extended to her and the groom, who is one of Schley Countys finest and most promising young men. Temple, Entertain Buena Vista, Georgia Route 3, June 29th, 1908 There was a delightful homecoming and family reunion at the pleasant home of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. McCorkle, Saturday June 27th. Thirty-one people were present, including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At noon a bountiful dinner was spread in picnic fashion in the cool inviting shade of the large tree out in the yard, and after dinner they enjoyed themselves talking of their childhood days, when they were all at home with dear mother and father, and some of the younger ones enjoyed themselves playing and singing, Miss Alice McCorkle being organist, and the smaller ones were having the time of their lives swinging and playing games at grandpas; the time sped rapidly away and soon the shades of evening told us that the time had come to part and departed for there several homes. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. B.R. Guy and children of Ideal, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Wall, of Mauk, Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Wall and children, of Tazewell, Mrs. H.T.
