Hello, Thanks for the information Kathleen and for the others that have written about my earlier post. After reading some in the Madison County Cemetery Book I believe that I did not find what is referenced there as the "Hutcherson-Carruth family" cemetery after all. I thought that due to the number of Hutchersons and Carruths buried at the Liberty Methodist Church, that this surely was the graveyard I had seen referenced as Hutcherson-Carruth graveyard or cemetery. Now I see that the book indeed references a spot up what is referenced as People's Church Road further towards Elridge Crowe Road than to Highway 174. While in Madison County I stopped at a lot of cemeteries and crossed the county quite a few times. I stopped at the Shiloh Evangelical Methodist Church thinking this may be the Hutcherson-Carruth cemetery only to find there were no Carruths buried there. I then took the road beside the church which by my map was People's Church Road, but read Evangelical Church Road, and going north apparently passed the site where Hutcherson-Carruth cemetery must lie. It is apparently not visible from the road and must be in one of the pastures on the west side of the road. After coming to the northern end of this road I turned onto Harry Paul's Road and continued on past Hubbards Creek to Liberty Methodist Church where many Carruths and Hutchersons are found buried. I thought for sure this was the Hutcherson and Carruth cemetery and was surely where many of them were buried once the graveyard was started there. There are a few stones found on these grounds that are apparently gravemarkers but without and identifying features. According to the book however, I passed right by what is referred to as Hutcherson-Carruth cemetery where it is stated on page 267, "There is nothing to indicate who was buried here, but among them was a baby of Fannie Jordan, and two baby boys of Eldrige and Modie Crowe, one of whom was born and died Aug. 1938." So apparently there are notable graves, but nothing indicating or marking the names of those buried there. If anyone has more information on this small graveyard please write to me and let me know. Thanks!! The only graves before about 1850 in this area of Georgia that have tombstones are those whose family members had them placed there in later years. Granite tombstones were not available before this time. Kathleen >>
