Notes for MINNIE TALLULAH HEMPHILL: Some data on Minnie is from "Robert Hemphill and His Descendants 1775 -1985", by June Coker McNew, pgs. 292-297 and p. 322. Minnie was the only child of Robert Hemphill, Jr. and Mary Bond. Robe rt died in the Civil War, leaving his widow with a young child to raise. The widow Hemphill marr. Obadiah DEAN in November 1865 following Robert's death inFebruary of that year. Minnie's mother died before Minnie was age thirteen. After her mother's death, Minnie continued to live with her stepfathe r, Obediah Dean, who remarried when Minnie was 13. Minnie married Jos eph Russell Ayers in Franklin Co., GA on 12 Aug 1880. A conversatio n with Minnie's daughter, Bessie Ayers Fisher, revealed that Minnie died on 28 Sep 1894 of typhoid fever. After she died, her husband wa s appointed guardian of their minor children: Robert J., Clyde, Ernest, Lucy, Bessie and Lettie May AYERS. Guardianship papers dated 7 Jan 1895, signed Daniel McKenzie, Ordinary. Joseph died just a few months later of pneumonia. The children were then orphans. Joseph's brother, Sanford Marion AYERS, Sr., was appointed guardian. Sanford, and an other brother T.W., and a Tom WILLIFORD raised the children. Also received supporting data from Bill L. Once she got i n the wagon with Mr. and Mrs. Wiliford, Bessie was given a big bag of fruit s and candy, and a doll as large as she was. After bessie had been with the Willifords about a year, Lettie Mae also went to live with them. Bessie and Orr Fisher lived in Atlanta and had only one child.
