    3. On the same page as the Martin Streetman record (H-136?) is apparently a clerk record of some other issue in the court. It is not dated, but is probably circa 1822. I have no idea if this is the entire record or a fragment, but this is what is on the photocopy I have. In case it is of interest to anyone... It reads: ************************* Ordered that John CLEGHORN Esq Charly CHRISTIAN and William MILLER be and they are hereby appointees Road Commpany for Capt. CHRISTIAN Dist. ************************** Does this mean that these folks were responsible for maintaining the roads in this district? I am curious, because it reminds me of a similar record I have of my TN ancestors who were ordered by the court to hoe a road between certain landmarks or face fines, if the road was not maintained for traffic. I was surprized to learn that this is how roads were maintained before city/county taxes and public works departments--the court assigned people (crews) roads to maintain. Maybe this is the origin of the remark "a tough road to hoe." Heidi Streetman
