Hi, This lady married John Newton (Jackie) Cleghorn in Madison County on October 11, 1836. I'd appreciate hearing from any Perry researchers who can give me any background or connections. Best regards, Robert Haynes
Hi! I am desperately trying to find my ancestor, John ADAMS, with no luck - so I thought it might help to check out all the websites of the list members who are descended from ADAMSes. If you have a website with your ADAMS Genealogy, please send the URL to nbedell@negia.net. Thanks, Nancy Bedell
Just testing - I am having some problems. Nancy
Marie, Can you clarify this for me? Did the Joel Freeman family you mention (see letter below) actually live in this David-Freeman cabin? Do you happen to know the approx dates? Or other details of this family? The information I have is, Joel Freeman (living in Madison Co, GA) b.1776 d.1863 m. Elizabeth Ware, they had a son Joel Newton Freeman 1822-1883. I have no wife for this man, and had thought he was in the Richmond Co GA, area around the Civil War. These Freemans were related to other Freemans residing in Jackson and Franklin Co GA. Thanks for exchanging ideas on this,,, Laura F. The cabin is a dogtrot log structure was once presently located on Hwy 335 on the East side of Nicholson. Davids mother had purchased the property in the 1820s. David built the two room structure in the 1840s and contemporary additions were added in 1920 and also 1940. Davids wife of Ms Sarah Strickland of Madison County. After her death he married Ms. Lucinda Pittman. One of their daughters Lutitia married Joel Freeman from the County of Madison. They had 8 children. The cabin never had running water or electricity for home conveniences. The cabin was donated and removed to the Hurricane Shoals Park, and is in viewing at the History Village for tourist attractions.
The Index to the 1880 Census Images is online in the Madison County Georgia Archives http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/madison/census.html Thanks especially to Rick Elliott who put the files together and wrote a soundex program so that you can find your names more easily. Has anyone heard of a Gordon Ridgeway who was living in the Royston area in 1954? His wife is apparently a sister of my Jonah Human... something I *just* noticed in his obit (which I've only had for about 20 years!). I've never heard of Gordon Ridgeway, and all of Jonah's siblings are accounted for (or so I thought!). Eeks! Jeanne Arguelles ejarguelles@msn.com
There was a Jonathan Pruitt who lived in Madison Co GA I had found information that leads me to belive there are records in the probate offices on this Pruitt family. The time would be around the 1830's or 1840's. If anyone has researched this family and might have some information I would love to know more. There is a Jonathan Pruitt living in Elbert Co GA 1840 who moved to Cherokee Co AL 1850 his wife was Polly Ashley and I belive them to be the parents of my ggg-grandfather Cason C Pruitt. Thanks Linda
Hello all, I am seeking information on the descendants of Alsey CATLETT and Nancy SIMMONS. Alsey CATLETT was probably born in the 1790s in NC. He is said to have died in East Feliciana Parish, LA on 12 Mar 1852. His widow and several of his children are listed on the 1860 census of Pointe Coupee Parish, LA. The family had moved to LA sometime after 1840 from Stewart Co, GA. They had previously lived in Madison Co, GA. Here is a listing of the known children of Alsey and Nancy: William L CATLETT (ca 1820 - ???) married Mary E ??? (ca 1825 - ???) Susan CATLETT (ca 1822 - ???) married Noah WHITTINGTON (ca 1810 - ???) Mary (or Martha) CATLETT (ca 1825 - ???) married ??? KOON(S)/COON(S) Reuben CATLETT (ca 1830 - ???) Alsey CATLETT (ca 1837 - ???) In 1870 Susan CATLETT WHITTINGTON was living in the household of Williams and Ann POOLE in Pointe Coupee Parish, LA. It is unknown if there is any relationship. The CATLETTs and WHITTINGTONs are said to have been land owners in LA. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have any information on this family. Your suggestions on further research possibilities in the specific locales mentioned are also appreciated. Thanks! Gary D Treat

Dear List: I have a question: Does anyone know or have experience with purchasing the Madison Co. Cemetery book. I ordered one about 2 weeks ago and would like to know if this is about a normal time for waiting for it to arrive? My next book will be on Madison Co. which will be Volume 8, of These Men Wore Grey. "http://www.hartcom.net/~scv935/grey" Appreciate any responses. Karen T. Ledford/Toccoa, Ga.
Donna~ Don't mean to horn in on yours and Marc's conversation, however........ I can't find a Madison County Cemetery Book here in Hall Co., GA and I am trying to locate the grave of my G Grandfather Dennis Stephens in order to put a CSA marker on it. As a lot of us do, I waited to late for my father to take me to it, he's gone now. A I know is that he is buried in what was once a family cemetery and is now a pasture. My Grandmother, his daughter was born in Madison County. Would it be too much to ask for you to see if Dennis Stephens is buried there? His second wife may be buried beside him since he is not buried beside my G Grandmother Mahulda Jane Payton Stephens. The second wife's name was Nancy Duncan. Thanks so much, Bonnie Gainesville, GA
Marc - I don't have a contact # for the cemetery - but I do have a copy of the cemetery book for Madison County. Will be glad to do a lookup for you if you give me a name. Donna Aiken,SC
Hi Everyone, I'm new to this list. Was wondering if anyone would have a telephone number or address to where I can write to the Comer Cemetery in Comer Georgia. Possible someone who takes care of the cemetery that can help me loccate a dead relative there. Marc

The GA State Archives site (and Ancestry's Red Book) lists 14 counties that complied with this act and whose 1875-76 vital records are available at the GA State Archives. Madison Co is not listed (and neither is Oglethorpe), but the Oglethorpe records are available through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I don't know if such records are available for Madison or any other counties not listed by the GA State Archives. Does anyone know?? The following site lists the 14 counties that do have 1875 vital records that are available at the Archives: http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/rs/gbdr.htm Jeanne Arguelles ejarguelles@msn.com

>My ancestor appears in the 1880 census but not in the 1900 census. So she >died in between. How do I find out when a person died during this time >frame? Good question! If anyone has some suggestions, I hope you'll post them through the list so all can learn. I've never looked at tax records from this time period... are they available, and if so, from where? Mike, was the gal you're looking for single/widowed when she died? If so, there might be some type of probate record for her, besides a will... letters of administration, estate inventory, etc. That's the only thing I can think of, other than an obituary, and who wants to scroll through 20 years of newspapers? (Okay, I admit, I would love to, if I had that much time!). Jeanne
My ancestor appears in the 1880 census but not in the 1900 census. So she died in between. How do I find out when a person died during this time frame? Are their tax lists available for each year? She has no will and no tombstone. Suggestions are appreciated. Michael Black
