Ga Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Madison?read=61 Surname: Clift, Eaves, Meredith, Whitehead ------------------------- I am sorry I posted my query in the wrong category so will repost here. In 1808, Henry CLIFT and his wife, Sally MEREDITH CLIFT, along with Buckner EAVES and his wife, Polly MEREDITH CLIFT, sold land in GA to settle the estate of James MEREDITH, father to Sally and Polly. I am trying to prove the marriage of Henry and Sally and that they had children, Elizabeth in 1804, and James Clift in 1805 in TN. I have found a record of a marriage of one Sally CLIFT and Samuel WHITEHEAD in Madison Co GA 24 Dec 1814. Did this Henry CLIFT die or did they divorce? Family records state the marriage of Henry and Sally as fact and it is known that Elizabeth and James were born in TN and did live in Lincoln Co TN as well as a Henry CLIFt until his death in 1854, but there is no mention of Sally CLIFT. Appreciate any help at all in resolving this puzzle.

    3. Posted on: Madison Co. Ga Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Madison?read=58 Surname: Swindle, Swindell, Lemons, Depriest ------------------------- Seeking information on the parents of George D. Swindle (1829-1910), that came to Tattnall County GA through Madison County GA in the 1800’s. George D. Swindle, a farmer/planter, married Esther Weathers (1835-1912) daughter of Aquilla and Harriette Weathers, in Tattnall County, GA on July 6, 1852. George D. Swindle served in the 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Calvary during the Civil War. George D. Swindle moved from Tattnall County, GA to an area in Liberty County that later became Long County, when Long was created in about 1920. We suspect George D. Swindle’s father is James Swindle (c. 1804-c. 1863) from VA/NC/SC. This James Swindle’s parents are Solomon Commodore Swindle (c.1780-c.1870) from VA and his first wife Sarah Lemons from Rockingham, NC (she died on March 11,1819) . Letha Depriest of Madison County GA is believed to be George D. Swindle's step-grandmother. Solomon Swindle's second wife was Letha Depriest that he married on March 11, 1819 in Madison County, GA.

    2. George Halsell
    3. Am seeking information on the families of James Gildersleeve WOOTTON and Elizabeth Elenor (Ellen) SANDERS, who were married in Madison City on 22 May 1839. The wedding took place at the home of Elizabeth's father, John SANDERS. John's wife was named Marah ?, and he had a brother named William Joseph, who appears to have married Elander LESTER. James G. WOOTTON and family, and probably Marah SANDERS as well, moved to Lafayette Co., MS in January of 1844. Finally, can someone tell me where Madison City is? Is this the same as Madison Springs, or has the town been renamed? I know that there is also a Madison in Morgan Co., GA, but my information lists Madison City in Madison Co. Thanks for your help! 3. I am now the File Manager for the Madison County Archives. I would like to welcome any documents that you would like to submit. We would especially like Bible Records, Obituaries, Wills, Deeds, Marriages, Newspaper articles and anything that would be of help to genealogists. Remember that if this is under copyright, you must have written permission to post it. The 1870 & 1880 Census Image Indices have been completed and are online. We know of some errors but would welcome any corrections that you might know of. We do have to put what is written down but some of it is very difficult to read and if you know what it should say - it helps! I would like to make these changes all at once. Please send them to me by May 1 and I will make the changes at that time. The 1900 Index is coming along but we could surely use some help on the 1910 and 1920 Indices. If you would be willing to help, please contact me. Mary Love Berryman mailto:marylove@tyler.net http://www.tyler.net/mlb/

    1. 1820 Census John Montgomery (possibly other Montgomerys)
    2. M.Warren
    3. Hello all-- I've posted this or a similar message on several sites, so if you've seen this before, feel free to ignore. I suspect our John Montgomery was in Madison Co. GA in 1820 (35 yrs. old). [Census: 100021-10010.] I also notice a lot of neighbor's surnames there. John Montgomery was in St. Clair Co. AL 1830--1840. As were William and Elizabeth Montgomery (b. 1788 NC -- ch: Crawford, Dorcas, Sarah, Susan), and David and Sallie Montgomery (b. 1790 SC -- ch. may be Augustus, Wm. P?). Don't know if or how they're related. John Montgomery is believed to be the son of Robert (and Mary ROBINSON) Montgomery, Mecklenburg Co. North Carolina,1738-1834. Robert only had three male descendants: 1785 John and Margaret (BICKET/Becket) Montgomery, 1777 James and Rebekah (CLARK) Montgomery and 1794 Josiah and Mary (BARNETT) Montgomery. Robert Montgomery, Jr. was unmarried. Robert's married daughters were: 1777 William and Lucinda (Montgomery) CLARK, 1789 John and Margaret (Montgomery) WITHERSPOON, 1787 Dave E. and Rebekah (Montgomery) BARNETT, 1790 James and Dorcas (Montgomery) BARNETT, 1800 James and Jane (Montgomery) PORTER, 1800 Isaac and Mary (Montgomery) MASON. Robert Montgomery, Sr. was the son of John and Martha MONTGOMERY, N. Ireland to Lancaster Co. PA ca. 1730-1735. Birthdates are approx. Would anyone have further info on these families? I've put our family lineage on a webpage: http://www.geocities.com/wm9600/montgomery.html John and Robert's families are at the bottom of the page. I work backwards. Would appreciate corrections or info anyone would like to add. I'm still working on this. The St. Clair page doesn't go anywhere yet. I do have more info on our generations 3-6, children/marriages, descendants in Central Alabama (Tuscaloosa/St. Clair Co.). I'm putting that into a gedcom, but it's a lot so I'm not finished yet. The following was posted on the Montgomery-L. It might help some because it includes related surnames and migration info. For other AL/GA researchers, a Charles Montgomery was in Tuscaloosa Co. AL by 1830, as was a Jane Montgomery -- still don't know the relationship. Esther Montgomery m. John HINTON in Tuscaloosa Co. 1823. Charles administered John Hinton's will. John Montgomery (b. 1785 NC, d. 1870 Tuscaloosa Co. AL) arrived bef. 1850 from St. Clair Co. Alabama. William CAMPBELL, b. 1791 was right next door to John from what I can see. I only mention this because William Campbell is the first name in the John C. Montgomery family bible. William P. POOL, b. 1792 SC, was another neighbor. (His son? Wilson B. POOL was born 1812, Greenville Dist. SC, died 1894 in Tippah Co. MS. His wife was Ann HOOD.) GRIFFINS were also neighbors. Campbells, Taylors and Pools were related. I don't know the relationship between these early Montgomerys or William Campbell, yet they were all neighbors. Sorry, I never have one question, I have 15. You may reply to: mt.warren@sk.sympatico.ca Regards to all, Melissa Warren

It is difficult for me to determine exactly where he lived because at that time it was part of the old enlarged Franklin County. He has been listed as living on Gorhams Fork of the Hudson River and the "Shole Branch of Broad River". He also was listed as being in District 7 of the 3rd Division of Franklin County in 1798, between 1800 and 1805 as being in Cpt Epperson's District or Company and in Cpt Wyley's Return in 1810. Is there a map for sale or a book that shows the locations of the rivers and/or the various districts/company locations? Would like to share information with anyone interested in the above surnames. An Ezikiel and a James HILLIAN/HILLIN were living in the same area about the same time.

This book will list and briefly describe all Civil War manuscript collections held by organizations in this state. Due to the large number of such organizations, I cannot visit them all. I need a couple of volunteers to help me with Madison County. The task involves visiting the local library as well as any museums and historical societies to check and see if they have any unpublished Civil War era letters or diaries. After that a brief description of the item is all I need. In most cases this entire process can be completed in an hour or two. All volunteers will be credited for their work in the foreword of the book. This work will be of great importance to historians and genealogist all across the nation.
