    1. [GAMADISO] Revolutionary Soldiers in Madison County
    2. Jeanne Arguelles
    3. Dear Madison County Researchers, We would like to create a new page with information about Revolutionary Soldiers & Patriots who lived and/or died in Madison County. As far as I know, there is no master index listing Revolutionary Soldiers by county... so we could use your help in developing our own! If you know of a Patriot who spent time in Madison County, please let me know. We will create a list with the Patriot's name, and (if you wish) your name as a descendant and/or researcher. Also, if you have any info about the Patriot that you can share, that would be great. If known, you might want to include any or all of the following info: Name DAR Patriot Number Description of service Reference to proof of service (pension number, etc) Date & Place of birth and death Burial location Spouse(s) and marriage info Names of children Places of residence (especially time spent in Madison Co) Biographical sketch Links to online info about the Patriot Whatever else you'd like to add Even if you just have a name, that would be great -- we can always add additional info as it is uncovered. The Patriot need not have died in Madison County... as long as they spent some time there, we'd like to include them on the list. This will be a great resource for researchers, and a nice way to honor our Madison County Patriots! Thanks for your help! 3. Thank you very much for all the records from Madison County, Ga, that your folks are putting on-line. It was especially enlightening to read the records of New Hope Presbyterian Church. I grew up in the Presbyterian Church in North Carolina, and recall some of the "old timers" talk about the "trials by the session". Thankfully, we don't do that today! Where I have inserted an asterisk (*) into the text, I follow the clerk's (Gholston's) signature with a note, interpreting the text/transcription. Probate record 115 @1848/1849 Madison County, Georgia The State vs. Allen C. 3. Dear Madison County Researchers, April is "Madison County Records Month!" Okay, I just made that up... but let's have a "Records Drive" to get more Madison County data online! You can submit Wills, Estate Records, Bible Records, Obituaries, Deeds, Military Pensions, Court Records, Biographies, old letters, newspaper articles and other documents to the Madison County GaGenWeb Archives by sending them to Mary Love Berryman at MaryLove@tyler.net You can also submit Family Group Sheets for your Madison County families. 1. [GAMADISO] Joshua JOHNSON and his many creditors (many NAMES here)
    2. Heidi Streetman
    3. The following is Probate record 73, circa 1820, Madison Co., Georgia Regarding Joshua Johnson and his many creditors. The record is in the handwriting of the court clerk, and some names are really difficult to decipher. I have put _______ (my best guess to what it says?) in the places where handwriting was undecipherable. Heidi Streetman (transcriber) 12 October 1820 The said Joshua JOHNSON having been brought up before us agreeable to his petition and states that Morgan BRADFORD at whose insistence he is now confined together with James LONG, Samuel WILLIFORD, Wm. W. Hared, Hardy L.FENNEL, Henry TANKERSLEY, Willis POPE, John MONTGOMERY, Thomas OGLESBY, Shemai MANN, David MORGAN, ___ (Jos?) BONE, Gabriel BOND, Martin STREETMAN, Richardson HANCOCK, John RICHARDSON, Charles W. RAWTER(?), James H. BOWDEN, Jesse (?) CLEMMENTS, Buerell ORR, J__ (Jess?) PHIPPS, Charles SORRELLS, John GRIFFETH, Thomas EVANS, Rust L. LIPPETO (Lisseto?), Alexander G. TYLER, Eli SANDERSON, Robert GROVES, John TAITMON (?), Barnabas BARROW, Jus (Jno?) OWENS, Ruth STRICKLAND, Stephen WILSON, Isaac STRICKLAND Are all of his creditors that he now recollects. It is ordered that on Monday the Twentieth day of November, ________(next?) the said Joshua JOHNSON be brought before us or any three of us in the Court house in said County of Madison by twelve o'clock on that day then to be discharged to Insolvent Debtors by Law which his said creditors as said or more of them should then show sufficient cause why he should not be discharged. 1. [GAMADISO] CLEGHORN, CHRISTIAN, MILLER
    2. Heidi Streetman
    3. On the same page as the Martin Streetman record (H-136?) is apparently a clerk record of some other issue in the court. It is not dated, but is probably circa 1822. I have no idea if this is the entire record or a fragment, but this is what is on the photocopy I have. In case it is of interest to anyone... It reads: ************************* Ordered that John CLEGHORN Esq Charly CHRISTIAN and William MILLER be and they are hereby appointees Road Commpany for Capt. CHRISTIAN Dist. ************************** Does this mean that these folks were responsible for maintaining the roads in this district? I am curious, because it reminds me of a similar record I have of my TN ancestors who were ordered by the court to hoe a road between certain landmarks or face fines, if the road was not maintained for traffic. I was surprized to learn that this is how roads were maintained before city/county taxes and public works departments--the court assigned people (crews) roads to maintain. Maybe this is the origin of the remark "a tough road to hoe." Heidi Streetman
