Nancy, Ooh! I'm interested in your Erskle HAWKS! I have Elizabeth Hawks b.1776 in NC, married Alexander HUMAN 1810 in Madison. Living next to them in 1820-30 is Frederick HAWKS (who I know all about, and think is Elizabeth's father, but can't prove it). There was an Edward HAWKS of Oglethorpe who had dealings with the Humans in 1840s. This Edward Hawks married a Miss GLOER (another Human also married a Gloer). I can't link any of these HAWKS together for sure, but it seems they must be connected! Who's your Erskel? Jeanne, There's a web page for the University of Georgia in Athens. In there, there's a page about the Georgia Newspaper project. You may want to check that because I think they have their holdings listed for the newspapers and dates that they have on microfilm. I don't remember seeing anything that old for the Madison area. The oldest paper from Madison is the Danielsville Monitor, and I think it starts around 1890? Also the Comer News a little later. The Oglethorpe Echo and the Elberton Star have copies from the 1870s I believe. I wonder if the Athens paper went back that far? I have no idea about Royston. Sure would be neat to find a write up about that! I posted an obituary of my gg grandfather on the Banks County page. He fell into a fire. They left none of the details out! I found his obituary in the 1894 Jackson Herald. Let me know if you find any papers in our area that old. Scott
Hi Madison neighbors, Does anyone know if there was a newspaper for Madison County, or the Royston area, in 1842-46? Or if any other area newspapers might have included blurbs on Madison news? (I'm looking for info on a murder trial -- the court records for those years are missing! Arrgh!) Thanks! Hello, I haven't seen any messages on this particular list for several weeks and I'm wondering if it's still active. I first posted this about six weeks ago and am reposting it now. My name is Rick Elliott and I live in San Jose, California. I'm researching my mother's (BURROUGHS) line and I've tracked it back to Madison County, GA. Is there anyone out there who has connections to this name? If so, please contact me either off-list or on, depending on which protocol you've all decided on. Thanks and Regards, Rick Elliott
Sorry, Duren H. MEADOWS and Rutha HUMAN had a son Bazil H. MEADOWS (not Bazil HUMAN, as I just posted. Jeanne Arguelles ejarguelles@msn.com
Does anyone know anything about a Lewis or a Samuel BROWN who lived in Madison County c1830s? They bought land adjacent to Alexander HUMAN in the Fork District of Madison... I'm thinking that one of them may be the father of Anna BROWN (b. 1814) who married Alexander HUMAN 1834 in Madison. Also looking for info on Duren H. MEADOWS (MEADERS). He married Rutha HUMAN in 1834 in Madison County. They had a son, Bazil HUMAN. ALSO, if anyone runs across the surname HUMAN anywhere in your research, I'd love to hear about it! Thanks! Hi Sorry for the delay, as I have been at the Nashville Archives and therefore out of pocket for a few days. You may already have an answer, as I am wading through close to 200 messages since Friday. I am the listowner. It is a new list. I have no problem with a roll call, however I will not provide addresses without the permission of the owner of the address. Anyone who responds to the roll call has in effect published their name to the list. As to lookups, I have no problem with offers to do lookups as long as you have read and agree to abide by the GAGenWeb policy on lookups. See below: -------------------------------------------------------------------- GaGenWeb's Official Policy GAGenWeb will not tolerate any copyright violations. Lookup requests should be limited to one name, or perhaps two if it is a married couple. Information given will be minimal, for example if it is a cemetery lookup, the information will be the name of the cemetery and the dates on the headstone. Please do not ask for "everybody with X surname" or an entire family group, or for hardcopies to be mailed; the volunteers have been asked not to comply with such requests. Our lookups will extend to searching the book to determine if the book would be helpful to you in your research. Should the book prove useful, we may be able to provide the authors address and ordering information. -------------------------------------------------------- Also http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamadiso/sources.htm has a list of known lookup persons. I hope this helps. Hi, I would like to share information about the following surnames: Berryman Bragg Ballenger Mason These families all lived in Madison county from the early 1800's except Mason. My 4th ggfather, Edward Denney, operated a ferry across the North Fork of the Broad River in the late 1700's and early 1800's. The ferry has long since vanished but I am interested in finding the site. According to some old maps, the road on the Madison County side leading to the site was named Courthouse Road. Does anyone have any information about this road. Is it still passable? Can I get to the river ? I have heard that the Elbert County side is very difficult to travel.Iunderstand that in 1969 the remains of the ferryman's house was still on the land near the river on the Madison County side. Edward Denney owned acreage on both side of the river but the land was sold by his heirs in the 1800's. Thanks for any help.
Looking for descendants of Edward and Jean (Armstrong) Denney's daughters. Edward died in Madison County, Ga in 1821. He had 3 daughters: Catherine "Caty" Denny married Thomas N. Palmore 2/14/1887; Jane Denney b. 1786 in S.C. and m. John Penn about 1802; Margaret "Peggy" Denney. Also need information about Robert Denney's descendants. Robert , b. about 1793, d. 1845, was youngest son of Edward and Jean Denney.
I'm very new to this list and, as I understand it, the list is very new - I don't even know who the listowner is. Is a rollcall allowed on this list and if so can we have one now so we can get some idea of who is on the list so far, etc.? Members can also list resources available to them if they are willing to do lookups. For instance, I have the Madison Co Cemetery Book and the 1820 - 1850 Madison Co Census. Thanks for listening. Donna Roberts Aiken, SC
Rick - Have you seen the Madison Co Cemetery Book? Many Burroughs in it. If you haven't, I'll be glad to look for Rosewall, etc. for you. Let me know. Donna Roberts Aiken, SC
Jan, Thanks for the note. My direct line would be Rosewall (spelled several different ways) BURROUGHS born about 1836, died about 1924. He and his wife Sarah GALLAGHER had about 12 children, one of whom Alexander R. BURROUGHS is my g grandfather. I believe Rosewall's father was another Rosewall or Rozzil Burroughs and he may have married a woman whose first name was Permelia. I'd appreciate it if you could add anything to this. Regards, Rick Elliott San Jose, CA 95135
Does anyone have access to the Tax Rolls for Madison County..WILLIAM CARITHERS b. 1788-1855. Thank you, Jan
