I just found out the the courthouse, in Madison Co., GA, doesn't have death certificates before 1927 - the woman told me that the whole state of georgia didn't have them before 1927. It sounds like I am out of luck - what do I do know? Nancy

I know I have a copy of my great grandfathers death cert from Atlanta and he died in Madison Co in 1922. The correct listing is below: I just got a birth certificate for my Great Grandmother and it listed her Father as William MARTIN and her mother as Ann MOBLEY. I went to the Clarke County Georgia Health Dept. today and got a copy of my Great Grandmother's(Nancy Mildred Martin) death certificate. It had her parents names listed as William MARTIN and Mary MOBLEY. In "The History of Madison County Georgia" by Paul Tabor, 1974, page 142 "In 1938 (should be 1838) Hannah and Rose, slaves of George Bragg, were found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 50 lashes on bare back and brand M on left cheek." Who did they murder? I would be interested in any information about this event and the people involved. Perhaps there is African-American oral tradition about this event that would be very interesting. Same book and page "In 1842 William Thompson was shot and killed by Philip owned by George Bragg with Levi, slave of William Thompson assisting. Both were found guilty of murder and were hung for it." At the time of the murder, Frankey Berryman Thompson, wife of William Thompson had filed for a divorce which was dismissed after William's death.
