I am looking for anyone who has an ancestor by the following name: Loudicie, Dicie or Dycie, Lucinda, Ludica(surname possibly Bevel(Bevill-not sure) - b. 12 Oct 1817 South Carolina d. 12 July 1895 Madison County, Georgia. I will take any reponses from anyone with a Female ancestor by this name(and similar dates). If this looks familiar to anyone, please email me at nbedell@negia.net. Thanks, Nancy Bedell
I'm researching Burroughs.... but I think it might be the "other" branch of Burroughs than you given the Kirk and Gunnels relations. My line is from James Burroughs born in St Mary's Co., is that in MD? I think so ... who married Sarah Watson in Caswell Co., NC before moving to a site on Brush Creek here in Madison County that he bought from an Adkins in 1816. He lived close, maybe even next door to a Rozell Burroughs who lived previous in the same part of Carolina that I haven't been able to prove or disprove a relationship with. All this is off the top of my head but I have a lot of information on their descendants thanks to helpful kin in other forms of reference if you're interested. Hello, Thanks for the information Kathleen and for the others that have written about my earlier post. After reading some in the Madison County Cemetery Book I believe that I did not find what is referenced there as the "Hutcherson-Carruth family" cemetery after all. I thought that due to the number of Hutchersons and Carruths buried at the Liberty Methodist Church, that this surely was the graveyard I had seen referenced as Hutcherson-Carruth graveyard or cemetery. Now I see that the book indeed references a spot up what is referenced as People's Church Road further towards Elridge Crowe Road than to Highway 174. While in Madison County I stopped at a lot of cemeteries and crossed the county quite a few times. I stopped at the Shiloh Evangelical Methodist Church thinking this may be the Hutcherson-Carruth cemetery only to find there were no Carruths buried there. I then took the road beside the church which by my map was People's Church Road, but read Evangelical Church Road, and going north apparently passed the site where Hutcherson-Carruth cemetery must lie. It is apparently not visible from the road and must be in one of the pastures on the west side of the road. After coming to the northern end of this road I turned onto Harry Paul's Road and continued on past Hubbards Creek to Liberty Methodist Church where many Carruths and Hutchersons are found buried. I thought for sure this was the Hutcherson and Carruth cemetery and was surely where many of them were buried once the graveyard was started there. There are a few stones found on these grounds that are apparently gravemarkers but without and identifying features. According to the book however, I passed right by what is referred to as Hutcherson-Carruth cemetery where it is stated on page 267, "There is nothing to indicate who was buried here, but among them was a baby of Fannie Jordan, and two baby boys of Eldrige and Modie Crowe, one of whom was born and died Aug. 1938." So apparently there are notable graves, but nothing indicating or marking the names of those buried there. If anyone has more information on this small graveyard please write to me and let me know. Thanks!! Best Wishes, Harvey Carrouth 7/27/99 7:01:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time, sisjared@bellsouth.net writes: << I couldn't help but notice Harvey's disappointment in finding the early graves only had rocks and no tombstones. I would like to get in touch with anyone who has information on or connections to my Cooper family. My great-grandfather, Rev. James P. Cooper (b.1873 Meriwether Co., GA; d.1932 Athens,GA) was the son of A. J. Cooper (b.1825, d.1902) and Ann H. Mathews (b.1829, d.1907). His first wife Nina and their two children died within 3 years of their 1896 marriage. He then married Leila Moore(b.1881, d.1923) in Dec. 1899. My grandfather, James G. Cooper (b.1901 Griffin, GA, d.1942 Baltimore, MD) was the first child of that marriage. Other children of Rev. James P. Cooper were Joe Cooper, William J.Cooper , Roy Cooper, Coy Cooper, Jack Cooper, Charles Cooper, Kenneth Cooper, Ina Cooper, Nina Cooper, Sarah Cooper Petty, Lucile Cooper Bales, Edna Cooper Gregory, Bessie Cooper and Kathleen Cooper. Some of his children may have been from his third wife Annie, who he married after Leila's death in 1923. Rev. James P. Cooper, his second wife Leila and some of their children are buried in the Old Hull Cemetery in Hull, GA. If anyone has information about these Coopers, please contact me at lwood12910@aol.com . Hello, Just returned home from a trip to the N. Georgia areas of Elbert, Madison, Franklin, and Hart Counties. It was a wonderful trip and everyone was very helpful and nice. I wanted to let you know of a wonderful lady I met at the Elbert County Courthouse in Elberton who besides doing her job in the Probate Court Offices is a dream come true for those of us making a trip there in reference to information concerning our families genealogy. Her name is Susan Sexton and she has a lot of information concerning genealogy for the area and was very nice to talk with and very helpful. I was able to purchase a book of "Early Cemeteries and Gravestones, Elbert County Georgia, 1708-1919" compiled by the Elbert County Historical Society. The old courthouse and town square in Elberton are truly a site to see when you make a trip to this area. I also visited the Madison County government complex and the Probate Office. Mrs. Brown and the others there were very helpful in pointing out how to look up information in the old court records stored there. I was also able to purchase the books "The History of Madison County, Georgia" and "Madison County Cemetery Book" at the Madison County Public Library. The old Madison County Courthouse in being renovated and apparently will become a museum. Just across the street from the old courthouse is an old hardware store that was a great place to stop and visit also. The hardware store has been in business since the 1800's and has many old items on display. It was like walking into a museum or going back in time seeing some of the items placed up high on the shelves surrounding the new items for sale. The store owner (Mr. Chinook - unsure of spelling) was very nice and helpful about answering my questions concerning the area. He said the hardware store was owned by the Green family. One of the highlights of my trip included visiting the Stinchcomb Methodist Church, formed in 1794, where I found members of my Andrew, Sanders, Dickerson, and Carrouth family lines buried. At this cemetery lies Robert Asbury Carrouth and Amanda C. Carrouth. They are my second great grandparents for my Carrouth (Carruth) family line. They are surrounded by graves showing Andrew, Sanders, and Dickerson. Robert's mother was Harriet Nance Andrew and Amanda's maiden name was Sanders. Robert's son Thomas Sandford Carrouth (buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery outside of Royston along side his wife Frances and his brother James Carrouth's family) married Frances Elizabeth Dickerson. Other highlights of my trip included finding the site of Carruth's Mill and what has been known as "Hutcherson-Carruth" cemetery, located today at Liberty Methodist Church. There are many Carruths and Hutchersons buried here. I was unable to find the graves of my 5th great grandfather Robert Carruth (died in 1815), his son Adam Carruth (my 4th great grandfather - died in 1840), or my third great grandfather James Elbert Carruth (died in 1850). However, I believe they may be buried at the above cemetery (Robert, Adam, and James Elbert) or the Stinchcomb Church cemetery (James Elbert) due to many gravesites being there that have only rocks or large stones showing someone lies there, but no names engraved. If anyone has information on there gravesites I would appreciate hearing from you. One of James Elbert Carruth's sons, also James Elbert Carruth (1846-1923), is buried at the Old Fork Cemetery along with his wife Martha and son Oscar. Also, anyone knowing of the Carruth family history, please write to me at: <Harvey33@aol.com>. Best Wishes, Harvey Carrouth Some other family surnames from this area are: Carrouth, Carruth, Dickerson, Sanders, Andrew, Andrews, Anderson, Dove, Starr, Allen, Manley, Attaway, Wilson. Also, Mrs. Sexton has a book called "Elbert County, Ga., Heritage 1790-1997" published in 1997 by the Elbert County Heritage Book Committee. The book is not currently being published, but will be again once at least 50 signatures are received that want a copy of the book. In this book is an article submitted from my Uncle William Thomas (Bill) Carrouth concerning the family (# 364). There are also pictures of my Uncle and my grandfather, great grandfather, and second great grandfather. Hope some of you will let Mrs. Sexton know you are interested so we can get a copy of the book soon. I am looking for a Mrs. Judie Eaves of Chattanooga, TN. I didn't know if she might be a member of this list, or if someone might know her, if so - please let me know how to get in touch with her. She posted a Query in the Family Puzzlers on June 19, 1980 on the Bryant - Briant - Winfrey Sunames. I think I may be descended from Sarah Ann Rhody Winfrey who died in Madison County, GA and was buried at Colbert Cemetary and then moved to the Evergreen Memorial Cemetary in Athens, GA in the 1950's. She married William(Billy) F. Martin. If you can help me or any of this looks familiar to you, please email me at nbedell@negia.net. Thanks, Nancy Bedell
I have just found out the names of my Great great great Grandparents and am hoping that someone out there is doing research on the same line. Their names are Milliton(?) Mobley and Nancy Cote Mobley. They had a daughter named Sarah Ann Mobley who was born 25 Dec 1840 in Madison Co, Georgia(I think) and died 1 Mar 1920 in Madison County, Georgia. The Madison County Cemetary Books says she was buried at Colbert Cemetary but to Evergreen Memorial Cemetary in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia(in the 1950's). If this looks familiar to anyone, please email me at nbedell@negia.net. Thanks, Nancy Bedell
