Mitchell and John W. Mitchell of Macon Co., GA in the mid-1800s, and trying to find any connections with the Taunton family of Macon and Taylor Counties. In 1841, Nathan Taunton was murdered in Macon Co., leaving 5 children: Martha, John W., Penelope, Melissa, and Nathan/Matthew. Nathan's land was divided into fifths, and in Sept. 1859, John W. Taunton, George W. Hodges (who had a wife named Martha who I suspect to be Martha Taunton), and Benjamin F. Mitchell sold 3/5 of the former Nathan Taunton land to John W. Mitchell. Later that same month, William P. Whittington (husband of Penelope Taunton) sold his 1/5 of the land to John W. Mitchell. Either John W. Mitchell already owned the other 1/5 himself, or his purchase of it isn't recorded, but in Jan. 1860, John W. Mitchell sold the full tract to Nathan Bryan. > > Now, I can account for how John W. Taunton, William Whittington, and George Hodges came into possession of their fifths, but how did Benjamin F. Mitchell and John W. Mitchell come into possession of theirs? Melissa is the only other daughter of Nathan Taunton, but she married Thomas Downing, and they're listed in the 1860 Taylor Co., GA census. What happened to Nathan/Matthew Taunton? > > There are lots of other records showing interactions between the Mitchells and Tauntons throughout the mid-1800s in both Macon Co. and Taylor Co. What was the connection between these two families? > > Michelle Taunton > mtaunton@mindspring.com. > > > This is an automatically-generated notice. > > <http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ga/Macon?admin> > >
