I will call the Chamber tomorrow. I talked to Lois Payne in 1990 when my mother died. She was over 90+years at that time. I assume she has died. I did not see her name listed with the rest of the family in the cemetary in Oglethorpe. Do you know anything about what has happened to her? I think her father is buried in a different place and perhaps she is there. My grandmother married in Coleman, GA.in 1913. She went there to teach music and met my grandfather, Joshua Columbus Ammons, who was teaching school. Eula Payne was my grandmother's half sister. I thought that they had the same father, Dr. Charles Grayson Jones, but now I am wondering because of the name Eula Oliver Payne. Maybe they had the same mother, Anna or Annie H. Jones. I think that my great-grandfather, Charles Grayson Jones, was born in Meriwether County around 1837. I know that he joined the Georgia State Guard ( Robinson's ) Cavalry in Thomaston, GA in 1863. I do not know when he got out of the war or where he lived. There is 20 or so years I know nothing about him. He lived in Ellaville in Schley County in the 1880's- 1910's, where he practiced medicine. He and Anna had Charley, James Stacy, Leila Beryl ( my grandmother) and Willie in Ellaville. It was my understanding that they were his second family. He died in 1924 in Columbus, GA where his son James Stacy Jones lived, but was buried in Woodbury GA. At that time my grandparents and mother ( Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Ammons and Elizabeth Beryl) lived in Nashville, GA where granddaddy was the pastor of the First Baptist Church. I knew Aunt Eula and Uncle Stacy and am interested in learning more about my grandmother's family. I remember there were two Greer nephews in Columbus, GA. What happened to the Payne house in Oglethorpe? Any assistance you can give me would be appreciated.
