Davine, Thanks for your information and quick response. I'm not sure if the John UNDERWOOD in the 1850 census is the same as John A. UNDERWOOD in my original question. I base this conclusion on the data shown in the 1880 Sumter Co.,GA census for John UNDERWOOD which shows: 1). both his parents born GA. (Source:FHL Film 1254165 National Archives Film T9-0165 Page 16A), and 2). John's age of 42 giving birth abt 1838 GA. (Source: FHL Film 1254165 National Archives Film T9-0165 Page 16A). I know that census records are sometimes in error. But both his birth place and that of his parents are claimed to be GA, not NC. Any ideas of another way to confirm his parents??
