Octavia's marker reads Jan 26, 1880 - Jan 1, 1944. John Henry and family left Gordon County in North GA about 1930, to move to Macon County, GA. There might be a connection to the Great depression, details not presently known. > The 1880 handwriting is awful, the name Elisa was actually read from the 1870 census. Elisa is believed to be Henry's mother, though Henry is not listed in 1870. The names and ages don't quite match up from one census to the next, volumes have been written on census errors. Though Emily B. gained 19 yrs age in 10 yrs, she is listed in 1880 as Henry's sister, and in 1870 appears to be Elisa's daughter. The Catherine of 1870 might be Henry's wife of 1880, Henry might have been gone prospecting. The possibilities for erroneous assumptions are endless. > > 1870 Pickens Co GA, page 22B (printed #) > Family 363 - 363 > Johnson, Elisah 51 (F) keeping house > > Catherine 25 (blank ) > > Mary J. 23 asst at home > > Elizabeth 18 " > > Emily B. 16 " > > John B. 3 (blank ) > > Catherine Virginia Nelson was the daughter of John Daniel Nelson and Comfort Ida Jones. John was born May 2, 1825 in South Carolina, and died Jan 4, 1918 in Dalton (Whitfield Co) GA. The story goes that the weather was too bad to take John back to Pickens County to bury him beside Comfort, so he was interred in West Hill Cemetery, on the ledge over the rock building, with a view of the fenched-in Confederate section. John was a surgeon with 4th GA Infantry, CSA. John was also an accomplished blacksmith and gunsmith. John came to GA about 1845, married Comfort on May 18, 1847 in Gilmer County. Comfort was born Mar 13, 1829 in SC, died Jun 2, 1888, and buried at Bethesda Baptist Church in city of Nelson, on Pickens - Cherokee County line. John is pictured in "Pickens County Georgia Heritage 1853 - 1998" (Don Mills, publisher) with two lengthy articles. John and Ida are both pictured in "Cherokee County Georgia Heritage 1832 - 1998" (Don Mills) with two articles; and also in "T! > he Annuls Of Upper Georgia, Centered In Gilmer County" (1965) by George Gordon Ward. > Children listed in Pickens Heritage: > Chesterfield, married Saphronia Green; > John Calvin, m Mary E.
