Macon County is 40 miles south of Bibb. Macon , Georgia was chartered in 1823. No connections. Gail, I have lived here most of my life, and the only major change I know about is Hardeman Avenue and Forsyth street, and it still frustrates me to this day. Very through "cut throughs" and it runs for miles. You most likely have the correct town. Ok and bless you this is what I most needed to know. And one more thing, was it not Macon the town that at least at one time had all of the one way streets in it? Or am I nuts? The reason is we went once long ago to visit some kin who lived at Macon. That was all that Dad ever called the place. But as I child I do remember him and Mom in the middle of the night using the road map and flashlight and getting angry because the streets did not match the map because they had gone through and changed a lot of the streets to ONE WAY only. They would find the Street and could not turn down it. He finaly got out of a the car and stopped a cop and asked him "How the Hell do I get that way down this Street" , and showing him the map they both laughed and the Cop had us follow him to the other Street by that name that went the way we needed to go. Come to find out to get to these folks home, we had to go down a couple of blocks turn left go down so far to the end of the one way part and then make a very sharp turn to the left again and go back up the same Street the other way to get to their home!! And I think it was Macon the town. Does this sound right? I mean the part about all the one way Streets? See Dad had not been in a very long time and over the years the City had grown and they changed it a lot and he was in the right spot and knew where the house was but could not get to it for all the ONE WAY only signs!! Dad used landmarks to go from place to place you see and this just threw him bad. Gail
I have added some abstracts for Taylor County on the Crawford site. Many of these names are found living in Crawford later on. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacrawfo/abstracts/abstract1.htm Margie
Gail Moore: Never, Macon County was created in 1837 from Houston County. Parts of Bibb County were also created from Houston County. But these two were never the same. Next question please, did it always use to be that way or did the City of Macon use to at one time dating back perhaps belong in Macon Co. as well? I mean back when the Counties were larger and fewer in number. I am trying to gain a better idea of what took place in some of my own lines in that area. Thanks for the help. Gail
Gail Moore: There is a MACON COUNTY, GEORGIA with the towns, Oglethorpe, Montezuma, Marshallville and Ideal located within the county. There is a CITY OF MACON, located in BIBB COUNTY, GEORGIA, approximately 40 miles north of Macon County. Woah!! Wait a minute is there a Macon County and also a Macon town or City located in Bibb Co. GA and these are two very different places. Or am I miss reading something here. Gail
Betty: Will take you up on offer of information if you happen to have any on the Newton's, Barfields or Shiriah's in that area of GA. Or perhaps the Davis, Barfield, Killcreese line or maybe even both. Thanks, Gail
Hello everyone, I recieved a copy of the obituary I was looking for 1st thing this morning thanks to Jennifer Braswell. I really appreciate all of you that responded with suggestions. I think I will learn a lot from this list. Thanks again, Betty
Betty, Go to the Macon County site and use the search box on the front to see if there is something already there. Also, from the front page of Macon County check the Georgia Newspaper links. There are a lot of Macon newspaper info on that site, again just use the search box or use your browser to search. Hello fellow researchers, I am new to the list and I am hoping to gain some information on the families I am researching. I was just made aware of this list when I contacted someone concerning an obituary. I hope someone can help me out. I am trying to get someone to check for an obituary for for Suella (Colter) O'quinn. I was told it would probably be in the "Macon Telegraph". I am hoping someone will check for me and if anyone is searching in the Lowndes, Brooks or Colquitt county I have a lot of information on those areas. Thank you in advance, Betty Colter
