I know you had to read through a lot to get to the Underwood part that I had. Old family bible pages note that my great great grandmother, Sarah Jane Underwood, wife of Josiah Hill died very young and that her children were raised by her Underwood grand parents. One of her children, William Hill had his name passed on to my dad who was William Hill Bowen, then on to me and I became William Hill Bowen Jr. I don't think anyone should have a JR tacked on their name. An interesting thing is that my Mother's family was Clark and that her great great grandfather, Richard Clark was also from Macon County, GA and ended up moving to Jefferson County Florida. Sorry I could not be of more help. Bill Bowen William Hill Bowen, Jr. MONTICELLO FL
Davine, Thanks for your information and quick response. I'm not sure if the John UNDERWOOD in the 1850 census is the same as John A. UNDERWOOD in my original question. I base this conclusion on the data shown in the 1880 Sumter Co.,GA census for John UNDERWOOD which shows: 1). both his parents born GA. (Source:FHL Film 1254165 National Archives Film T9-0165 Page 16A), and 2). John's age of 42 giving birth abt 1838 GA. (Source: FHL Film 1254165 National Archives Film T9-0165 Page 16A). I know that census records are sometimes in error. But both his birth place and that of his parents are claimed to be GA, not NC. Any ideas of another way to confirm his parents?? There was a hotel, dance floor, swimming pool ( guaranteed to be the coldest water in the world), cottages, and seven springs, each having different water. It was located near Lanier, Georgia, now a ghost town, on the west side of the Flint River, off of what use to be the Ferry Road that crossed over to Highway 49, just south of Marshallville, Georgia. It was a "swinging place" back in it's heyday.
