    3. I have the Lowndes census on disk. Can someone tell me how to understand the Militia District system? I have heard of this all my life but never understood it. charles t. zeigler

A Militia district was organized as soon as a certain number of able-bodied men were found to be living in a particular area. The men would be required to organize into a militia company and report for drill on a required basis. I can't remember the exact number required but I am guessing anywhere from 30 to 50. The Militia Districts are still around and the militia companies have evolved into the National Guard. Joe
