    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: ULMER Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jc.2ADI/519.1 Message Board Post: My great, great grandfather operated a funeral home in Valdosta, GA. His name was John Porter (J.P.) Ulmer. He was born in Savannah, GA on 23 October 1866. He died on 11 March 1954 in Central Florida. He was one of the first funeral directors in South Georgia. I believe all of his sons except for one became funeral directors as well. His wife's name was Ida Florence James born 26 July 1865 in Ware County, GA. I believe they had 8 children. One was my great grandfather, Robert Cicero Ulmer (1891 - 1935), who ran a funeral home in Waycross, GA. I believe John Porter Ulmer's parents were George C. Ulmer and Sabra E. Harris. I have the following newspaper clipping circa (1915 - 1930): "Mrs. R. C. Ulmer ... was licensed as one of the few women embalmers in the state of Georgia. Mrs. Ulmer is the wife of R. C. Ulmer, well known Waycross funeral director and becomes the seventh living member of the Ulmer family now serving as licensed embalmers. The Ulmer family for three generations has been identified in the funeral business in this state. Mr. Ulmer's father, J.P. Ulmer of Valdosta, still being active in the work." Jim, do you have a connection to this family? I'd be interested to hear from you. ~Diana
