I'm copying this to the HOWELL list - as it will go to the Southern HOWELL list as well........ Re: GALOWNDE-D Digest V02 #77 Re: www.sgaonline.com Thanks Lee - I was able to find that site when another suggested it (I'd had it but somehow had forgotten it & did not still have it bookmarked). Only 1 problem w/that site for older newspaper info - the "Valdosta Daily Times" seemed to only be archived for some 2 years :-( Can't speak for the others, tho & at least I've got that site marked again for info that's not so old! My HOWELLs from Thomas, Lowndes & Berrien Cos, GA: g-gf (JOHN) CASWELL HOWELL b ca 1820 NC d 13 Mar 1883 Milltown, Berrien Co, GA sp, PERNEICE (MORING??) b ca 1825 NC?/GA? CASWELL HOWELL moved to GA from NC - moved to Thomas Co, GA along w/his bro & where his bro, BARNEY B. HOWELL & w, SMITHY ANN (MORING) stayed. CASWELL & wife. PERNEICE (MORING?) moved over to Alapaha area - in Lowndes Co, GA I think that later became Berrien Co, GA. CASWELL HOWELL was ordained as Baptist preacher ca 1854 at New Hope Church in Thomas Co - he was continued preaching & farming after his move. Their son, HAMPTON A. HOWELL [shs - my grandfather] b ca 1851 Thomas Co, GA [ca 1 yr old when they moved to Lowndes d July 1919 Milltown, Berrien Co, GA 1st wife - DOROTHY ANN TALLEY who died - 1 living dau, ANNIE HOWELL who mar a SIRMANS. 2nd wife LILLIAN EUGENIA LAMB [my line] b Sept 1859 probably Berrien Co, GA d Feb 1950 Lakeland, Lanier Co, GA son, HARRY LEE HOWELL b July 1902/03 Milltown, Berrien Co, GA d Feb 1975 Americus, Sumter Co, GA [My note: not sure of the "JOHN" in CASWELL's hame, but deceased aunt, ELIZABETH (HOWELL) JONES (Mrs. H. H. Jones of Lakeland) stated in info done for my Mom that his name was JOHN....... Uncle "Big Jack" HOWELL of Valdosta was called JACK C. HOWELL - but our family used so many nicknames that one of his grand children thought he might have been named JOHN CASWELL HOWELL after his grandfather & called "JACK"... "Big Jack's" son was called "Little Jack" - (LIttle Jack was JACK E. HOWELL) both of them were w/the Ford Motor Co which I think was named Ellinor Motor Co in Valdosta....... My own Dad was always known as "Buck" tho his name was HARRY LEE HOWELL - as I said - our family was notorious w/nicknames! <g> Also, the name of CASWELL is so butchered it can end up looking like anything anything but!!!! I've seen it in a transcription as "C. GOODWILL" - I've seen it given as "CARSWELL" & just today on Ancestry.com, I saw it as "CROSWELL"....That was a first!!!!!!!!! Poor G-Granddad! I hope he didn't have that much trouble w/it while alive! Also in Huxford's books, on "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" he gives CASWELL HOWELL's wife as ARRENA WOMACK - my aunt gave it as PERNEICE WOMACK - I looked for years on those names & could never find anything until an NC researcher told me of finding LDS records on CASWELL HOWELL & BARNEY B. HOWELL & it appeared that the wife was CASWELL's wife was PERNEICE MORING & that wife of BARNEY was SMITHY ANN MORING - perhaps these were sisters or cousins... Later my Sis & I found info in a 1929 book that states the wives were MOORINGs(/MORINGs} & were daus of HENRY MOORING of New Hanover Co........ In this same book, there are 4 HOWELL brothers listed as coming from "this branch of the HOWELL family originally resided in NC - the grandparents, so far as can be ascertained, having been lifelong residents at Snow Hills in that state..." NOW, if the book had only named the parents & grandparents!!!!!!!!! The 4 HOWELL boys are: CASWELL H.; BARNEY B.; PAYTON H.; & TURNER H. Thanks again to all for the help - any & all help gratefully received here!! I would love to share/exchange any info on these & other family lines I research in the south GA area: LAMB; TALLEY; LOVEJOY; MOBLEY; CARROLL; also my lines of my husb's in SE GA.
