Hello Phyllis, Thank you so much for providing this information. I see now that somehow the information on the son and the father was 'merged' together and mistakenly used for the father (Tyree Mathis) instead of for his son. Thank you! This helps to clear it up completely. I will make the necessary changes in my database and show the Huxford Society reference as one of the new sources. If I send you my snail address, is there any way you could share a copy of the graves? I would be happy to pay for a copy being produced as well as your postage. Most probably when Ray and I walked through Prospect we missed these graves. This was back a few years ago before they repainted the church building and cut down so many of the trees surrounding it. Have you seen it in the last year or two? It looks wonderful :-) When Ray and I went, it was in the middle of the summer and I have this healthy respect for rattlesnakes and mococins so I did as little walking as possible because the grass was a little high that day :-) I made Ray walk where the grass was a little too high for me and he may have walked right past their graves. Again, thank you so much for this new information :-) I try very hard to not give out incorrect information and when I see that I have something questionable, I try to find an answer. To me, this is why 'sharing and comparing' our information is so very important! Nancy, In response to your mail to William, I also went to Prospect Cemetery back in 1997 and took a photo of Tyre Mathis and Nancy Lee's gravesites. They are only marked with small stones and metal markers. They read: Tyre Mathis 1806 1891 and Nancy Mathis 1809 1890. According to Huxford Genealogy Society, their son, Edmond died in 1864 at Camp Chase, Columbus, OH and is buried at the Confederate Cemetery there, gravesite #1175. -- Phyllis Borden digging@flash.net http://www.geocities.com/~slater-hollow
Good Evening William, In a recent post to the list, you submitted the following: 2 Nancy LEE b: 1809 d: 1890 in Clinch Co, GA ..... +Tyre MATHIS b: 1806 in Bulloch County, GA m: 1826 Appling County, GA d: January 08, 1891 in Clinch County, Georgia Burial: Prospect Church in Clinch Co., GA Father: Edmund MATHIS Mother: Unity REGISTER May I ask where you found the death information on Tyree Mathis? I ask because it is different from the date I have; I show his death to be in 1865 and that he died at Camp Chase, Maryland. This info was shared with me by John R Clarke, a fellow Dame/Register/ Tomlinson researcher. Mind you, I am not questioning your validity. I am just trying to see if my information is incorrect :-) Several years ago my husband and I went to Prospect Cemetery and to North Cemetery. We 'walked' both cemeteries and he wrote as I called out the names and dates. I also went back to North Cemetery with a hand-held recorder and did the same thing just to be sure I had it down correctly :-) Again, I AM NOT questioning your information :-) I don't recall seeing a grave for Tyree Mathis in Prospect, but as you well know, there are several unmarked graves and several that you cannot make out the names. Because the cemetery is somewhat small at Prospect, it is even possible that I missed his grave, not knowing at that time that he was related to my ancestors. I've been guilty of doing that on more occasions than I like to admit :-) The info that John sent to me did not include a place of burial for Tyree. It may be that his information is incorrect and yours is correct. I just want to put it into my data correctly so please do not think I am attacking your information :-) I look forward to hearing from you on this. I have to also admit that it was not I who caught this difference of death dates :-) It was fellow list member Ken Smith who brought it to my attention. So I ask not just for myself, but for other list members who may have seen my date and assumed it correct. Regards, Nancy E Parr
Thought I'd share this with everyone. The Courthouse doesn't have any at this time but the Chamber of Commerce does. When talking with the person at the Courthouse she said they didn't mail them out. She then directed me to the local library to a Betty Bradford who happens to be an author of an indepth history of Lanier County. I'm now ordering both books from her. The phone # at the library is 912-482-2904. The address is: W. L. Miller Library 124 S. Valdosta Rd. Lakeland, Ga 31635 I won't give the price of Ms Bradford's book out on the list but will privately. Good Morning :-) Because so many folks descend through the Register lines, I thought this might be of interest to list members on both the Lanier and Lowndes lists. The following are excerpts from Judge Huxford's POWG; I did not document the volume and page numbers :-( I descend from Samuel Register and wife Elizabeth Skinner as well as through Samuel's sister Nancy Register who married William Tomlinson. Anyone wanting to share and compare info on these families, please contact me. I want to take just a moment to say that without all the years of hard work and dedication of Judge Huxford, many of us would not know the 'story' of our ancestors. He took the time to tell 'stories' about these families where he could and that makes it all the more interesting for us as we read about all the folks who settled these counties. I am most appreciative of his valued dedication as Historian. Regards, Nancy E Parr ========================================== Samuel Register, son of John and Dorcas, was born in Sampson Co., NC on Dec 1, 1786 and died at his home in Clinch Co., Ga on April 8, 1869. He was married in April 1806 to Elizabeth Skinner, native of SC where she was born Apr 5, 1789. She died at her home in Clinch Co. on Aug 20, 1871. It is not known where Samuel and Elizabeth were married. It is known that the Register family was in Bulloch Co at the time of the marriage of his sister Nancy Register to William Tomlinson in 1804 (that marriage being on record there). It is possible the marriage of Samuel took place in Bulloch and that the license was never recorded. Or it may have taken place in the adjoining county of Burke where a large Skinner family lived; the records of Burke having been burned between 1856-58. The court records of Bulloch county show that Samuel Register served as a Grand juror and as a Petit juror at various terms of the Superior Court prior to 1824. No deeds appear on record there to show him as a landowner in that county. He moved from Bulloch to Appling County in 1824 or 1825. He lived there until about 1826 when he moved to Lowndes County and settled in the 10th Land District near the present town of Ray City in present Berrien County, and on a farm that was in more recent years the homeplace of the late JS "Dock" Shaw. The 1827 Land Lottery showed that he registered to participate in it as a resident of the 10th district of Lowndes County, and was classified as 'soilder' thus denoting he had taken part in the Indian War. There are no records of his having served in the War of 1812, but records do show he served in the Indian War. ('soldiers' were entitled to free draws in the lottery.) Samuel Register served as a private under Capt. John J Johnson in the 2nd Regiment, East Florida Volunteers, Florida Militia (June 16, 1837-December 18, 1837). He was enrolled at Fort Gilliland and was honorably discharged at Newnansville. In this same service and company were his sons David and John Register. There were also two other Registers: Samuel Register Jr and John Register Jr. Samuel Register also served another enlistment in the Indian War under the same Capt Johnson (April 1, 1838-July 31, 1838). He also served a third term under this same Capt Johnson in the Georgia mounted Militia (Aug 25, 1840-Oct 18, 1840). On his Bounty Land application dated Nov 23, 1850, he was granted 160 acres of land for this service. His son-in-law John Tomlinson (husband of Zilpha) who served in the same military unit was granted 80 acres of land for his services. **Between 1840-42, he sold out his home-place referred to above, and moved to where the town of Stockton now stands. He acquired Land Lot 500, 11th Land District. (This territory was taken out of Lowndes in 1850 and put into the new county of Clinch, and in 1920 was cut out of Clinch into Lanier County.) The deed records do not show anything about the ownership of this lot prior to 1860. The town of Stockton was laid out of a portion of Lot 500, by Samuel Register, as soon as it became a certainty the new railroad would be through there from Savannah to Thomasville. He named it "Registerville", but the railroad people changed the name to "Stockton" by 1860, in honor of one of their contractors, a Mr. Stockton, who had charge of the road construction. The railroad was first knows as the Atlantic & Gulf railroad and is now the Atlantic Coast Line railroad. Three or four deeds are on record from Samuel Register to lots in "Registerville" but the deeds to other town lots have either never been recorded or if recorded, the records were burned when the Clinch County court house was burned in 1867 and all records lost. The map as prepared for "Registerville" has also been lost.** A description of the new town of Stockton is found in a news-item published in the "Savannah Morning News" of Savannah in its April 6, 1860 issue: "A writer in the Thomasville Watchman gives an account of his trip over the Atlantic & Gulf to Stockton, the present terminus of the road, and compliments Capt T J Naylor, the conductor on the train. The writer was struck with Stockton which he describes as a brisk little place with its hotel and livery-stable, to say nothing of its numerous refreshment saloons. The writer said he found 120 bales of cotton awaiting shipment over the road, together with much other freight." Living on a railroad apparently did not suit Samuel and Elizabeth Register as they moved from there about 1863-64; moving to Land Lot 230, 12th Land District of Clinch County which was located about two miles from where their son, William Register, was living at the time. The latter lived four or five miles south of old "Magnolia", the former county seat of Clinch county. It was there that the elder Registers spent their last days in quietude, honored and beloved by their large family of 14 grown children and an ever-increasing circle of grandchildren. They were revered and respected by all their neighbors. The first of the fourteen children to die was the daughter Edith (Eady). She had traveled to Clinch county from her home in Berrien county to visit her aging parents, being called there by reason of the enfeebled condition of her father Samuel. Soon after arriving there, she herself became ill with a cold which developed rapidly into pneumonia and she died on Feb 10, 1869. Her short illness and untimely death devistated her parents. Her father did not long survive the shock of her death, and he himself died two months later on April 9th, 1869. Samuel Register had acquired Land Lot 230 (described above) from his brother Abraham Register by deed dated July 13, 1853. On Oct 28, 1853 he bought adjoining Lot 275 from Hon James W Staten. He owned these two lots until his death. Following his death, on Dec 2, 1869 all the heirs, except Mrs. Jincy Lee and Samuel E Register, met at the old home of their deceased father and made arrangements for the care of their mother; also the disposition of the estate property. The son William agrees to take care of their mother and support her and a short instrument to that effect was drawn up and signed. The home-place lot #230 was deeded to William for $572.00. Lot #275 was deeded to the son Guilford. Elizabeth Skinner Register joined in the execution of the instruments which were sent to the two absent children and later signed by them. Thomas Mathis (widow of Eady) signed for himself and their children. So far as known Samuel Register never united with any church. His wife was a faithful member of the Primitive Baptist Church for over forty years prior to her death. She first united with the Fellowship Baptist Church in Appling County; and on Sept 13, 1828 was received by letter from that church into Union Church (in present Lakeland). She remained a member there until April 10, 1841 when she and others were dismissed by letter and entered into the organization of Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church in May of 1841. She was granted a letter of dismissal from Wayfare on Jan 6, 1855 but came back in by letter on Sept 5, 1868 . Where her membership was from 1855 to 1868 is not known. She died a member of Wayfare. Her death was on August 20, 1871 at her home.
Hi Connie, Yes, I show Jemima Lee to be a daughter of Joshua and Martha Ford Lee. However, I do not have anything further on the family of Jemima and John Mathis (children). Same applies to Nancy Lee and husband Tyree Mathis. She is daughter of Joshua Lee but I don't have any children for she and Tyree. I would appreciate anything further you could share with me. I am showing 6 children for Joshua and Martha Ford Lee: 1-Elizabeth, born 1801; married James M Patten; 2-Jemima, born 1807; married John Mathis (1802-1876) 3-Nancy, born 1809; married Tyree Mathis (1810-1865) 4-Celia, born 1812; married William Seaborn Peters 5-Sarah, born 1820; married Isaac D Hutto 6-Zachariah, (1816-1884); married Phoebe Register (1823-1905) I have 2 children listed for Elizabeth Lee and James M Patten; 5 children listed for Zachariah Lee and Phoebe Register; no children listed for Jemima, Nancy, Celia or Sarah. Anyone with this information, please submit to the list :-) Hope this helps. Nancy
Good Evening, If you have ancestors from Lanier County, may I suggest a book? Several years ago I made a discovery while researching at the Library in Valdosta. I found a book that tells all about the 'history' of Lanier County. I called the Lanier County Courthouse and found that this was published as a Bicentennial special and they had several boxes of the books left over from the celebration. I drove over to Lakeland the very next day and bought 3 of the books at $5,00 each. What a FIND. I keep saying that I need to go back and purchase more :-) The title is "Old Times There Are Not Forgotten...A Story in Picture and Words of the People of Lanier County". It was published by the Lakeland-Lanier Bicentennial History Committee. It is a paper book but quite large in size; it is 11" wide and 15" tall; 110 pages in length. If they still have copies, I'd suggest getting one ASAP :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr
Did Joshua Lee have child Jemima Lee b about 1808-1810 who married John Mathis born 1802 son of Edmond Mathis and Unity Register? And another daughter, Nancy Lee born about 1808-1815 who married Tyre Mathis born 1810, also son of Edmond Mathis? Thanks, Connie Rowe erowe@surfsouth.com
Good Evening, In response to a question posted on the Lowndes Co. mailing list, I wanted to send this answer to both Lowndes and Lanier lists. Joshua Lee, sketched below, is my gr gr gr grandfather. I descend through this line: 1-Joshua Lee & Martha Ford 2-Zachariah Lee & Phoebe Register 3-Elizabeth Lee & George Appling Fiveash, Sr. 4-Charlton Augustus Fiveash, Sr. & W. Alice Tomlinson 5-Dorris Alice Fiveash & Richard L Evans, Sr Regards, Nancy E Parr ============================================ Joshua Lee was born in South Carolina in 1782, a son of Moses Lee. He grew up in Marion District, where he married Miss Martha Ford, born 1780 in SC <daughter of James Ford>. Joshua and Martha Lee moved from South Carolina to Georgia in 1808 or 1809. Their first residence in Georgia was in Pulaski County where he appears as a Petit Juror <June term 1890 Pulaski County Superior Court>. He owned and lived on Land Lot 23, 22nd Land District of Pulaski County. In the War of 1812, he served in 1813 in a militia detachment stationed at Forts Green and Lawrence on the Ocmulgee River. When Appling County was opened to settlers, Joshua Lee was among the first to move there in 1819. In 1825 he moved further southward and located in Lowndes County where he settled on the west side of the Alapaha River and acquired land. Records show he bought Land Lot 521, 10th Land District on Nov 21, 1827 from James Blair of Habersham County. On Jan 7, 1830 he bought Land Lot 520, 10th Land District from Frederick Yeomans of Montgomery County and several other adjoining lots later. He soon began construction of a large millpond and installed gin and grist mills operated by water power. This made his home and plantation sort of a gathering place for the settlers to get their corn ground and their cotton ginned, and these circumstances soon gave rise to a village called at first "Alapaha" but the name was changed in the 1850's to "Milltown" and in 1920 to "Lakeland" <now the county seat of Lanier County>. This property was cut into Berrien County out of Lowndes County in 1856 and into Lanier County in 1920. Joshua Lee sold his possessions to William Lastinger on April 22, 1848, having traded with Mr. Lastinger for his valuable holdings in what was then Ware County, but now Clinch County, consisting of several lots of land with farms on each lot. His homeplace where he settled about 1841 or 1842 was on Land Lot 488, 7th Land District <Clinch County> which was the old Lastinger homeplace. Joshua Lee lived there until his death in 1855. He is buried at Prospect Primitive Baptist Church. Martha Lee, his widow, made her home withe their daughter <Sarah Lee Hutto> until her death around 1865. Joshua and Martha Lee were charter members of Union Primitive Baptist Church on Oct 1, 1825 and were members there until their deaths. He was ordained a deacon in that church on April 13, 1833 and remained active in that capacity until his death. (1) Acquiring Land--When Joshua Lee 'traded places' with William Lastinger in 1848, conveyed to Lastinger lots 519, 520, 421, 492 and one-half of 493 (approximately 2200 acres). We know that Joshua Lee also owned lot 521 at one time. Lee's property included a dam which created a millpond, a cotton gin and a three-story building housing a grist-mill and some wheat and rice threshing equipment. Having arrived in Lanier County in 1825 at the age of 43, Joshua Lee had acquired a good bit of land by 1848. As his mill, located on the edge of what is now Banks Lake (the remains were removed in the early 1930's to make way for Highway 122), was a gathering place for settlers, it can be said to have been the start of Lakeland. (2) William Lastinger added a sawmill (run by water) and at the time of the Civil War, he sold his mills to Henry Banks of Atlanta for 252 bales of cotton. The name was changed to Banks Lake. It would have another 'famous' owner, E.D. Rivers who would become Governor of Georgia. Hi Fran, I can help on one part of your question :-) Milltown is the present town of Lakeland. There's a history behind this story and as soon as I can find it, I'll post it. Maybe someone else can direct you on the location of Alapaha. I believe it's between Lakeland and Pearson off to the west. I've been through there but can't remember just how to get to it. Listmembers, can anyone locate for me Alapaha and Milltown? Both are presently Lanier County, but I would like to know geographically their location when in Lowndes Co. Thanks very much. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net
